Friendship Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Silhouette - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Good morning friends, fresh air, outside, breathing it in!  I’m up from the craft table today and away, so today’s post is short.  Always in need of a “Friend” card in my stash, today I’m sharing an all die cut card, no stamps, no coloring.  Sometimes I think that makes for a quick assembly :-)  The Silhouette is so very classic and is smack dab in the middle of my style and is surely a good choice for a girly card.

Friendship Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Silhouette - www.amazingpapergrace.com
I started out with a 6″ x 6″ card base and added a vintage musical paper that is matted with kraft colored paper.  On top of that I added Spellbinders Grand Stately Circles in black and another circle on top with pink striped digital paper.  I followed that with the laurel leaves from Spellbinders Royal Medallions also cut in kraft colored paper.   The pretty detail of the oval from Spellbinders Elegant Ovals is a great base to show off my cameo cut with Spellbinders Silhouette.  I finished up with a hand cut banner, pointed on the ends and added Spellbinders Celebration Two.

Today is a change of pace for me with colors.  Aww yep, pink got worked in but I wanted to pull out some black cardstock and give it a go.  I love the way colors pop with a black backdrop.

Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Quietfire Design and Spellbinders - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Top of the morning to you!   I have a new card to share this morning – Day 24 of the 30 Days of Giving.   I was playing around with more Sapphire Dies and loved this set of wings and heart called Love in Flight.  I stamped my sentiment on Spellbinders Baby Buntings and topped it off with Spellbinders Victorian Corners.  The sentiment is one of my favorites (yes, another favorite) from Quietfire Design called  There Are Two Things We Can Give Our Children.

If you’re new to the blog, welcome to my 30 Days of Giving – every day during the month of July I’m giving away a handmade card – you can read all the specifics HERE.  You can check to see if you’ve won a card by searching for your name on the Giveaway Winners page.  You get there by the menu at the top of the page – put your cursor on Features then look down the list and select Giveaway Winners.

For today’s comment – Which weighs heavier with you when you’re creating handmade cards – the overall look or the message?   There’s no right answer, just a preference :-)

  • Marzee CarnesJuly 24, 2015 - 9:16 am

I think, to me, it is the overall look. I already have a message in mind when creating the card, so it is the design that I struggle with. Though the message is the most important part to get across, it is usually the easiest for me, and I have to spend much more time on the design.ReplyCancel

  • Janet CobbJuly 24, 2015 - 9:23 am

It depends on the purpose, if it’s a sympathy card then the message is most important. If it is a birthday card, get-well, etc. then the overall look can be more important to me. Beautiful card, by the way! It would make an amazing Mother’s Day card for my new daughter-in-law!ReplyCancel

I think it’s the overall look. It depends on what the card is for naturally, but I like CAS cards mostly, I think because I’m uncomfortable in how to make the more elegant cards like you do so well! I have only made a couple of those and although they turned out oK, it was stressful to me. but I want the person getting the card to be very happy with what I’ve sent also.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca. That is a great sentiment on your featured card. For me, that is the biggest challenge is getting wording for what I’m making the card for. I like the professional look of a stamped sentiment, but often I hand write my own.ReplyCancel

  • Clare WJuly 24, 2015 - 9:53 am

O that’s a tough question! Both are important bit I think the look just pips it for me.ReplyCancel

  • Mary EstherJuly 24, 2015 - 9:58 am

Many times I make cards that are “blank” so that I may hand write a suitable sentiment inside…so I would have to say that the design is more important to me.

Thank you for the opportunity to enter to win one of your gorgeous creations!ReplyCancel

  • Jeannine S.July 24, 2015 - 9:58 am

It really depends on the occasion. If it’s something like a birthday or a happy occasion, I usually focus on the stamp or image . If it’s a sympathy card or a get well ( card for a cancer patient ) then I focus more on the sentiments used.ReplyCancel

  • SueJuly 24, 2015 - 9:59 am

Another beauty! The wings and heart look so nice. In answer to your question, I concentrate on the overall look. I don’t have many sentiment stamps and sometimes think that a sentiment on the front can take away from the design. However, I think that you incorporate your sentiments into the design with other dies, gems, ribbons, etc. so that they blend together well.ReplyCancel

  • Gay FerlandJuly 24, 2015 - 9:59 am

    Becca,

  • DeborahJuly 24, 2015 - 10:01 am

This is a hard question to answer because both are important to me! However, if I have to choose I guess it’s the sentiment – and the one on this card is fabulous, by the way.ReplyCancel

  • DebraJuly 24, 2015 - 10:02 am

    Beautiful card Becca!
I usually know what stamp I will use and choosing one is not difficult. I struggle always at the very beginning of creating a card. It’s like I can’t remember how! Once I decide what colors I’m using and the design, it all seems to come together. Magic happens while I’m making the card and it always amazes me. Almost always looks great when I’m done.ReplyCancel

  • SuzzieQJuly 24, 2015 - 10:02 am

This sentiment is one of my favorites as well. When I am creating a handmade card, I think of the recipient and their likes. The gender of the recipient is the first requirement in my thought process and definitely determines the look of the card. The message is most important and sometimes I will think about the message for a day or two to make sure I say what I want to say and not just choose a generic statement. Many times I will type up on my computer my message and add it to the inside of my card as a folded layer. I always add a short handwritten sentence or two also before signing the card. Just wanted to tell you how elegant your dazzlers are on your bows.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card. I love that gorgeous bow. I think both are important, but if it’s a thinking of you or sympathy card, I lean more toward the sentiment being important. Of course I always add a brief hand written note and think that’s important as well.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca! Happy Day 24 to you! This has been such fun to participate in with you. Love your card today. The new dies are gorgeous!
I think I have to look at both……because they interlink with each other.
If the look isn’t right for the sentiment…..or vice versa…..the card won’t
work for me. Guess I’m undecided which is more important!

    Hi, Becca,
Another thought-provoking question. Being a singer-songwriter, a similar question comes up. What’s more important, the melody or the lyrics?

Songs and handmade cards are powerful because of the harmonious balance of medium and message. The written word sometimes needs no embellishment but give it beauty for eyes and ears and that speaks directly to the heart. That’s why I love expressing this way, my heart can touch another’s heart. Isn’t that an amazing grace?

I have to say 50/50. In some cases such as sympathy cards, I do a general all white card with black stamp “With Sympathy” on the outside but in the inside I write a personal message. All my cards are made for receipent specific. Sometimes it is all about the outside and how decorated but the message is so important too.

I usually start with a message and then the design of the card evolves around this. The size of the message on a tag and the person’s gender and occasion will determine the coloring and embellishments used. Of course by the time everything is selected the whole room is a disorganized mess again. But it’s a happy mess.ReplyCancel

Becca I heard this saying this morning on AFR. They were talking about raising children. It is what we strive for with our children to know they can take care of themselves when we are gone. They need to know where they come from so they understand why we did what we did with them. When I make a card for someone I really want it to look perfect. I really want the msg to fit the look that I am going for. So I guess both! We can have it all! Blessings, LisaReplyCancel

What a beautiful rich looking card Becca! Just gorgeous. What weighs more with me the look of the card or the message? Hard to say as I want every card I make to be special for that individual person. I guess as I look at who its going to and what pleases them, I think it comes out a balance. Sometimes though I want to get more extravagant with a particular person and really push myself to make a “just right” card. Thanks Becca for a chance to win this creation of yours!ReplyCancel

Love how you anchored the wings with the pearls, great visual with the sentiment. Awesome card, Becca. Thanks.

Definitely for me, it is the message in a card, and then I try really hard for the design to support that. I want it to fit the person I am making it for, so color and taste come into play…steampunk for one niece, flowers for another, definitely the princess for one grand-niece, pink/purple for my daughter…but that very special saying first. For me it begins with the words and then works with all the other elements to say, “I love you and you are so important in my life…”
And now you have me thinking especially of my wonderful family, and how much I love them and the next card I will be designing for them….blessings and gratitude, Becca.

    Once again, another beautiful card.

Looks or sentiment. It kinda depends. Right now I have been on a kick of using up my scraps. So, I’m making 4 ¼” square cards with scripture verses and some that are get well cards. They are still pretty but it’s basically The Word that I am concentrating on. I will give them to our church secretary who will send them as needed. So far, I’ve made 19 and I’m close to using up the small scraps. One of the cards unfortunately was mailed to my grandson in Georgia who broke 4 ribs yesterday clowning around in the gym after he just ran for 30 minutes at school. School is out, but he is in track and they are in practice. He knows he was wrong and all he was worried about was the coach was going to tell me how dumb it was. Yes, grandson, a lesson learned. He’s down and out for 4-6 weeks. Praise the Lord he didn’t puncture a lung or damage his spleen. Maybe his Daddy can preach about him this Sunday. Oh those teen years.ReplyCancel

I hope my card draws them in to take a few minutes to really look at the card and that my sentiment will share the emotions behind my card. I would like to share how much I care, how many birthday wishes I am sending or that my deepest sympathy with prayers and love are being sent both by the look of the card and the sentiment. I do

You know how we say ‘first impressions are very important’ I think it is the same when someone receives a card. So, No.1 the best design you can produce in suitable or the favourite colours of the recipient, No.2 a spot on sentiment, expressing the reason for the card and appropriate personal message on the inside. Perhaps a suitable verse as well.

So in a way it’s rather even… Perhaps as I improve as a card-maker, I will be able to spend more time on the message, at the moment I work on the appearance as I see my technical flaws all too clearly in my cards. But I’m grateful I see improvement over time… :) Partially for sure due to all I learn from seeing your cards and from other card-making great artists. :)

I think with a true heart I would have to say the over all look for most of my cards. . . tho I do spend some time on the message, especially depending on who the card is for. . . some I know like it simple but sweet and others I know love a more in depth message! The one thing I always do is to hand write my message inside the cards, always!!!
    This is a stunning card!
Have a great weekend, Becca, can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!ReplyCancel

    Becca,

    Love the card as usual.

I think the overall design weighs heavier with me. I want it to be pleasing to the eye as well as speak to the receiver. I want the person getting the card to know i spent time to make sure it reflects their likes as well as their personality.

    Thanks!

Definitely the over all look. I can usually find a sentiment that expresses what I want but often I get caught up in the over all design.ReplyCancel

  • Leslie ScholesJuly 24, 2015 - 9:57 pm

Yet another beautiful card! I am in constant awe! I’d say the overall design weighs heavier. I pick my sentiment first & then fret the design – APG & Pinterest here I come…!! Thank you for your generosity!ReplyCancel

The overall look is my focus, but obviously color effects the card if I am making a condolence card. That would probably be the one case where I focus on the sentiment.ReplyCancel

  • NancyJuly 24, 2015 - 10:31 pm

I love your card and sentiment!! I find that the look of the card is very important but the sentiment needs to appropriate to the occasion. I often computer generate my own sentiments since I just can’t have every stamp I might “need.”ReplyCancel

Hi Becca this card is stunning!
I think I have to get the look I have in my mind onto card first , sometimes I have a specific sentiment in mind , or even a couple of possibilities.
But on occasion I design my card around my sentiment , especially with cards that reflect nature.
Hope you are well , take care ,

  • MaryannJuly 25, 2015 - 3:48 am

And you did it again, and made such a beauty Becca, and I absolutely LOVE this sentiment too. It is sooo true and actually the best gift you can give them at all.
I think I value both equally, as I always try to make all my cards so they fit just right for the person, who´s recieving it, and if I can find a sentiment, that just fiit that person too, I really feel a big satisfaction, when I´m done, and I know many of my friends have often said, that it was spot on and just hit them, and then I feel I´ve really managed to do a really good job. So as far as it´s possible I choose everything with passion.ReplyCancel

Wonderful topics you’ve been choosing this month! Love this idea of daily blogging. At least for me. Lots more work for you, I’m sure.
When I create an item, whether it is a card or not, I plan the design & the sentiment to coordinate with each other. I don’t care to put a cute sentiment on an elegant card, or an elegant sentiment on a cute card. That doesn’t appeal to me. Then again, I am not producing huge quantities of cards or projects. I can afford to be slow in my thinking process! LolReplyCancel

How is it I have some of these same dies and would never come up with such a beautiful card! Yet it makes me keep going, keep experimenting when I see your unique creations – so thank you from the bottom of my heart!
My Stampin Up person – Jenny Hanson showed me what was happening in the stamping world, then Yardgoods Center’s stamping group and Sheila Bacon, encouraged, emboldened, instructed, and generally helped me look behind a rubber stamp, ink, and embossing powder! There are so many talented artists who share their work and do training – so a little of each gets molded into who we are.
And of course, YOU! Thanks Becca!ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

Stunning card, so love the sentiment. Now for me I tend to think of the overall look of the card first then find a sentiment but on occasions they have both come together, although I feel the sentiment is more important than the look of the card! Now that has confused you hasn’t it? Lol!

Now this is more like a Becca card, Stunning, love the pearls that swirl and your bow is perfect! The quote is one of my very favorites! I sen to go with the overall look of my cards and not so much on the message, I usually go find a verse that fits the card or the occasions.

Such a beautiful card and die. Thanks for sharing. I REALLY wish I kept a journal starting with the first day of marriage. My husband is always telling me I never ever cut the grass in the past and I never did such and such. If I kept a journal then I could show him in black and white that I did for many years. There were also some important things that I always thought I would remember every detail but can’t remember now. I wish I kept a journal of the things my mother and father told me about when they were young and about their family. Now there is no one on either side to gather this information. I am so sorry I didn’t do a journal.ReplyCancel

  • christiJuly 23, 2015 - 11:48 am

I have never kept a journal and don’t know if I ever will. back a zillion years ago, when I was a teen I had a diary. I was probably 12 or 13 when I first got it and I wrote things in it for a little while. that’s 2 days maybe three then for the next few days I wrote same thing … then maybe onece a month for a couple of months then I didn’t write anything in it for at least 4 years. I was going to get a new one but that one had only a few pages used and it was a different time of year. I thought for sure i’ll keep up with it … well reality is I did just about the same as the first time. I think when I finished college and was moving out I found it and read it and laughed at what I had written and how studious I had been in keeping up with it. at that point I threw it away. that may be the only thing I actually threw away with out nagging. I learned from that that I probably wouldn’t write in one again. so far so good after 35-40 yrs I haven’t started one. I pondered writing a book but that would turn into a short story as I would bore myself!

beautiful card today and those colors are awesome.ReplyCancel

  • Barbara WilsonJuly 23, 2015 - 11:49 am

I don’t keep a journal much any more…indonhave the ones I used to keep, though. one thing I do notice as I (very occasionally) read back what I have written before…is how present I can feel back in the moment when I do read those kinds of things. A few months ago I was going thigh some old files and found some decades old things I had written when I made the decision to start seeking to adopt a child. I was a young pastor, single, but I knew I wanted a child…and so I started a file “Dear Daughter”. Little did I expect then I would be blessed with a son as well, and it took nearly 18 years to come to fruition, but I am so glad I have those letters now. I think I am going to pull them together, re-write them on vellum and create a book for her for Christmas. At the present, she is 18 and has been unsafe for herself and for us to live at home for over three years. Giving thanks for her, passing the written word along….
    Thanks again Becca….JoniReplyCancel

This card is beautiful. It actually looks like leather and lace. I kept a journal for almost a half of a year. I started it January 1, 2000. Y2K, remember that? Hah! Something bad happened in one of the months and the joy of journaling was lost for the remainder of the year. But, what was there seemed to be full of family and food. Birthdays, wedding anniversaries, all kinds of celebrations. I described what we had at every meal. Back then a meal wasn’t served unless it had homemade biscuits or cornbread. We are an eating family when we get together. It was fun to remember.ReplyCancel

I´m blown away once again with the beauty in your gorgeous work here Becca. Such an awesome card, and as always just pure beauty.
Yes I have actually quite often read back through old journals, and also enjoyed it a lot, but not exactly my own handwriting, as I feel, it´s got worser over the years, where we don´t use handwriting much anymore. And today it´s a big problem, because I´m of the old school, where we use the old handwriting, and none of my grandkids can, and even my kids have problems reading this kind of writing, so when I writwe to them, I most times writ it on the computer and print it out then, but I think, it´s a biiig pitty, that the handwriting this way get lost, because of this, cause nothing can compare to a handwritten note. I don´t write journals anymore, only if it´s some of these funny expiriences with the grandkids, that I´ll love to remember later on in life, then I have a journalingbook, that I write those episodes down in, but else not, I´m afraid.ReplyCancel

I’ve kept a journal throughout all the years we’ve been married. It started out as a daily memo for all expenditures then I began adding notes of the daily happenings. Now it’s mostly for logging any craft purchases which especially helps when I need to do a price check on a craft item or two. Reading through these books causes moments of reflection of that day, the thoughts I was thinking or planning and I can remember exactly what was going on and why. It seems almost like yesterday.ReplyCancel

Hah! I have a journal I received maaaaannnnnyyyy years ago. It has one entry in it! I never even kept a diary in high school. What I used to do was scrapbooking in high school.
I found several books I had made in HS when we went to sell our home in IL. We had lived in that home for 32 years, purchased it brand new when our boys were very young. We were totally downsizing, & happened to sell our home in 4 days! The buyers wanted a quick closing, so we purged, purged, purged! Was unable to keep many things at that time in such a short time frame. Managed to keep a few pages from those scrapbooks before I got rid of them.
It was so interesting so look through those books! First of all, I didn’t remember making them. Secondly, I can’t believe how thorough I was in their design. (Think obsessive in this spot, lol) Yes, my taste has changed, and so have the tools & products available. But for a young person, they weren’t half bad! I do wish I could have saved more things in that move, but maybe it was for the best.ReplyCancel

My left handed penmanship has changed over the years. I am not currently keeping a journal. My Mother-in-law keeps my handwritten letters so that is a little like journaling our lives. :-)

Sadly I destroyed the journals that I kept in high school – I’ve kicked myself many times. I have been keeping a journal of sorts in my Franklin planner, and it is fun to read back over the entries to read about things I’d forgotten I’d done.ReplyCancel

    Becca,
Your card is beautiful. love the copper accents.
I do not journal, but years ago – and I mean over 40 years ago, I wrote letters to my boyfriend as we were both away at school. He kept them all and now years later,we have reconnected as friends and he sent them all to me so I could experience them now. What a treat it was . Made me wish I had kept the ones he had sent to me.ReplyCancel

  • ANN ROBBINSJuly 23, 2015 - 2:51 pm

    Becca,
No journal but look at different papers, etc. to see that really my handwriting hasn’t changed much. My mother was a stickler for penmanship and guess I couldn’t get away with much with her, so have always tried to maintain (Palmer method) perfect penmanship. It also helps sometimes when cardmaking at least with the signature if not used anywhere else on the card.
Yes, this is definitely a “little different” but you can still see the “Becca” style there, with the layers, frills and bow! Love the copper accent!

I looked through several journals from many years ago when my kids were very young. I did enjoy looking back at these happy times and sometimes I would like to be there again. I no longer keep a journal thinking that it would be very boring now.

  • Carol RossouwJuly 23, 2015 - 2:58 pm

Yes! For years (since about the age of 15) I kept a spiritual journal recording my journey of faith. But, not long after my dear mom passed away I began to slack off on writing in it. Then I started homeschooling my 3 kids (2009) and have not written in it since! Time is an absolute luxury commodity in this season of my life. But I have on odd occasions read back through those pages and have seen the benefit of recording thoughts and prayers and experiences. I really must try and find time somewhere to jot down a few things. To think there’s a whole season of my life left unrecorded now! Another beautiful card with some really pretty new dies.ReplyCancel

    Hello Becca,
Your card today is really beautiful.
I used to keep a journal religiously, but in later years it’s more quick notes for each day. It’s funny but I was hunting for something last week and found a journal I’d kept when I was 14 and in a Sanatorium for a year. I read it and you know what, the memories flooded back and I was transported back. That was nearly 60 years ago!!!

I’m keeping a weight journal at the moment. Other than that, I have never kept a diary or journal as a young girl. Since my mother’s passing 2 years ago, the family has been cleaning the attic and we have found our grade school notebooks that my mother kept. My book was from the first grade;it was cursive writing. The letters are huge. Thanks for the memory.ReplyCancel

Yes, I keep journals. One for private thoughts, one for craft ideas yet to be made, and one for folks that I have made cards/projects for along with pictures etc to jog my memory. Couldn’t live without them personally. Something I have learned–positive thoughts make for much better reading later on so I save those thoughts and discard any negative ones I might write. Becca, this card is so striking–love the contrast and I’m gonna case this one for my sister’s birthday coming up! Thanks for the inspiration! :)ReplyCancel

Good afternoon Becca – Your new card is so sweet and lovely! I’m excited about the new Sapphire dies and happy to see an example created by you.
I haven’t kept a journal in the past but I am currently keeping one. I started this journal after my fall in early January of this year. This has been such a terrible accident but I’ve learned so much from it that I’ve wanted to be sure I didn’t forget this life adjusting event. At first, I was in such terrible pain that it was difficult to focus on anything but so many things were happening and I was experiencing so many emotions that i wanted to remember them. While I would never want to go through this again, I have learned a great deal about myself and my faith. I have serious potential health complications as a result of this accident so I’m especially thankful that I will be able to look back through my journal to remind myself of this journey and help me remember how much I have accomplished.
    Blessings to you.ReplyCancel

  • RonnyJuly 23, 2015 - 6:06 pm

I have done that, but not very much because I can’t seem to keep a journal for very long. I used to when a teenager and still have that(diary) somewhere, but it is so silly to read now about all the drama of boyfriends. Wouldn’t want my kids to read it! Another bit of journal I have was about the time my youngest was getting ready to leave home and be married. So interesting to read these things back after many years, don’t know why I can’t seem to be consistent at it.ReplyCancel

When I was a kid, I had a diary, but just about anything from my childhood is long gone. That’s by choice, as my childhood was not very happy. As far as journaling today, I had a Caring Bridge site for my late husband, and I have a blog, but of course those aren’t written by hand. I kept a diary many years go and have found it bittersweet at times. I have a kept a craft journal at all, or a life journal for years. I do you keep a journal on Sunday morning of notes at church. those are sometimes interesting to go back and read what was being preached, but also my own comments about my own life and my walk. It’s also proved helpful when we need a date of things that happened for the church! And you’re right back up, my handwriting has changed and morphed and changed back over the years.ReplyCancel

Every 10 years I get another 10-year diary. What I notice going over the entries of previous entries is how much I have grown over the years. My journal has been a major part of my life in therapy. I am also able to laugh quite abit about silly things I did!!!ReplyCancel

Another masterpiece, I’m catching up on posting comments, I was able to see most of your cards while I was gone last week, but the internet was not like being in the woods!I do believe this card is a little out of your whelm, not meaning bad, but not as pink and fussy as usual, gives me lots of ideas for a manly card though. Thanks so much for sharing all your beautiful works!

    Hugs and God Bless,
