Why do I craft? Because I can´t help it. It keeps me insane after I was forced on health retirement some years ago, and makes me relax, when my back is bothering me too much and I can´t get out of the house for long periods of time, and because I love the experecion, when I give some of my work to someone, and can see their face light up and the smile get wider, then I feel really good, and as I often get asked for special makings from people I think, they may like, what I do too.ReplyCancel

There are many reasons why I craft, I love cross stitching, crocheting and knitting, love baking for my grandchildren and reading, all of this I do because I just love it, when I’m here in my craft room making cards or sitting with my hubby knitting or in my kitchen baking for the kids, I feel rejuvenated, I feel at peace and I know I’m creating something beautiful that the recipient will love and treasure and appreciate.

Why do I craft? I’ve never thought about the why, but there are a lot of reasons. I love learning new techniques. There’s a sense of happiness when I’ve made a card that I know someone will love when they receive it. I love it when a scrapbook layout comes together and I think about the memories I’ve captured. Crafting is like playing with toys when you’re a kid! Plus, being an empty-nester, gotta have something to do and keeps the brain sharp too I think! It’s just fun!! I craft because it takes my mind off of the everyday problems we all have. Since my cancer I cannot work anymore and crafting makes me feel like I am accomplishing something . I love giving something I made to someone that isn’t as crafty to see there face lite up. Why do I craft.Well crafting of some form or other has been all my life from as young as I remember,knitting,etc,from the age of 12 years old making clothes for myself and school friends,then the worst day of my life my lovely mother passed away I was 12yearz old,so I continued crafting to help me cope with my sad heart.Then moving along years had major surgery,and found paper crafting ,making handmade cards,wedding invites and still it goes on,I had to finish work due to health issues,and now craft whenever I can.It saved my life,and makes me dissapeR to somewher eeand not feel all the pain I suffer from.I feel happy creating.Big Hugs HeatherReplyCancel

Dear Becca,
I love this card, the prayer is one of my alltime favorites. It was used recently at a funeral I attended for a 30 year young man who took his own life. The mother, who had lost another son in a motor cycle accident is a recovering alcoholic and it was very fitting that she used this on the back of the obit. card.

I craft because I know how forward some people (family and friends) look forward to getting one of my homemade cards. Also I think I make more sympathy cards (next to birthday) and when a grieving person receives a homemade card they know you were truly thinking of them when you made it. I get great pleasure out of them knowing how much I think of them.

Why do I craft? All my life I have been crafty, but for thirteen years shy of two months, my creativeness was silent. I became invisible to the world except to my husband who had become a parapalegic and needed complete care 24/7. There was no time, nor energy, for me, much less time to be crafty. After he died, I was lost for I no longer knew what to do with my time or myself. After two years of being in a dark, lonely place, I gained some sense of wanting to do something “just for me”. I had always liked myself best when I was being creative, so I decided to start making cards. Making cards was something I had wanted to do before my husband and my life changed direction in life. One of the first things I did to get started on my new craft of cardmaking, was to go to my local Michaels to buy some supplies. Oh, there was so many items to shop for and my knowledge of what was needed to get started was almost overwhelming to me. There in the store shopping in the same area, was a sweet lady shopping for cardmaking supplies. I asked her if she would recommend some items that I would need. This angel, who I just know God placed there in that spot that day for me, embraced me and helped me, a complete stranger. My tiny world changed that day. Besides helping me that day, she invited me to a cardmaking workshop the next weekend. I have been making cards since that time, enjoying my dear angel friend, and making more friends along the way. Crafting makes me feel good about myself. It gives me confidence in my ability to again join society. And it makes me feel good to know those who receive my cards are blessed to know someone was thinking of them and the situation they may be going through. Life is good!ReplyCancel

I really have loved that card for a long time and even had the audacity to attempt a few very similar ones! My version has the bow suspended from the top.(I thought your ribbon was also at the top – my memory!!) You know they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, just hope you agree dear Becca.
I have always been interested in making things that don’t involve a sewing machine e.g. embroidery, knitting, crochet, basketry etc. Due to my arthritis I no longer do any of the above but card making came on my radar. I enjoy having a pretty item at the end of my labours and have no problem accepting compliments. Other people’s joy when given or sent a card makes me happy too. I craft because I must! There is a drive to touch color, media, textures, and see what happens when my hands move and shape the mixture. I have been crafting with various things ever since I can remember. The mediums may have changed over the years, but now more than ever, I find it to be very therapeutic, to the point that I sometimes feel driven to make something. I like making cards because the recipients enjoy receiving them and frequently saving them. They are a tiny gift of love from me. I used to make bigger things, floral wreaths, etc, that took up a lot more space for me and for anybody that I gave my projects to as a gift. Now, if someone wants to save my card(s), they can easily be tucked away without taking up a whole closet!ReplyCancel

I’ve been crafting since I made houses out of popsicle sticks and purses using a loom and loops of stretchy fabric. I’ve done a lot of sewing, made holiday decorations, made porcelain dolls from scratch, crocheted and finally fell in love with scrapbooking when my first grandchild was born. I want to leave behind my view of their lives so they will know how much I loved them and the joy they brought me. That’s why I don’t just create layouts, I also include journaling written to them. My scrapbooking led to card making and now I do both. I love creating albums full of pages that will tell my Grandchildren how I feel about them and giving cards to family and friends to let them know how much I care.ReplyCancel

Why do I craft? Hmmmm. Extremely thought provoking, at least for me.
It began quite a few years ago as a way to make a special gift. I’ve already shared that story. Then, when I retired, I needed something to prevent boredom. I can only do so much exercise in a day! Lol. Plus, I wanted to make friends.
Since we moved to an adult community, it was a way to connect with others in the same position. Back home, all of my friends & family were still working. It is hard to do fun things during the week with working people. Plus, I am not good with sports. I can exercise, but that physical eye-hand coordination thing, not so good. I am very good with details, so this became my thing.
I find it relaxing at times, but stressful when I have a deadline. Plus, I have a nice space to work, but not much work space. That is frustrating for me. And my hubby does not understand at all. But, I manage to create now & then & then I am happy!ReplyCancel

Why do I craft, purely for my sanity!!! I love to craft, love how I feel mentally and physically while crafting. I get such joy out of crafting and sharing my wares with friends. I very seldom keep anything I make, it’s such a joy to give something handmade as a gift and watch the thrill from the recipient. I’ve been crafting (crocheting, sewing) since I was in the 5th grade, first project was a dress I sewed for a Girl Scout badge, from there it just has evolved into so much now. I even have my own craft room.

Another one of your word of wisdom cards that can so ease a bad time for the right person. I craft because i always have done since i was first able to sit upright, mum would do things with us of a crafty nature. Before i turned 3 years old i could read, write and had knitted my first jumper. We lived out in the countryside so with no one around us except the farmers livestock, mum was a stay at home mum and taught us all sorts of things to the point i can turn my hand to most things. But mum did this out of neccessity as her and daddy didn’t have a lot of money and having twins just double the cost of everything so she made do with the church jumble sales that came along making new clothes out of old and making toys with fur coats mostly teddy bears that she made her own joints for so that their arms, legs and head moved and put a growler in their tummies to make them talk. That was when life was a lot more innocent, you could leave your doors unlocked and open. Now i craft to keep my sanity as i was made to take ill health retiral from my job and if it wasn’t for my crafting i don’t know where i would be. Some days i just can’t even lift myself up never mind craft but i could be worse and i’m not and i thank him up there for that.
Thank you Becca for bringing us such inspiring works of art and keeping people like myself that aren’t as able as they used to be wanting to be able to acheive what you have done.

Crafting is alive and well as an art form! First it is in our nature to be creative. Second, may of my family and friends are crafting enthusiasts. The younger generation in my family also enjoys crafting. My brother does wood crafting including making furniture without nails! My niece in-law does crotchetiness and beading of which she donates the money to charity. Another cousin does beadcrafting and donates all the sales to charity.ReplyCancel

I don’t believe crafting is a lost art. We just need to pass it on to our children and grandchildren and even our great grandchildren. Yes, I have 2 of them. We have a club is the community where I live and we meet every Monday from 8AM-2PM. We have 175 members. Out of that club we have several small groups that meet in our homes week or monthly.ReplyCancel

It was a case of love at first sight with this card. I immediately purchased the dies and the Dainty Doilies stamps although I could never find the Small Dainty Doilies, it was not for lack of trying. I never quite nailed this card the way I envisioned it, but it’s on my To Do List still.

COMMENT: Crafting is far from a lost art, as evidenced by the multi million dollar industry that is thriving on it’s coat tails.So many thing would make it better, for me, is better pricing of supplies, the prices are ridiculously inflated and needlessly so.ReplyCancel

My sister, who is a knitter says a lot of her favorite yarn stores have closed also. I try to teach my grandchildren some things I know to pass on and make memories. I don’t know that it’s a lost art. it seems that a lot of us don’t have the funds to purchase all the goodies that make cards so lovely. Dies, ribbons, embellishments, sentiments. So many products and techniques. Yes, I know we can make simple cards. Just taking a class to try and better yourself at a technique is very taxing when you’re in a one income family. Sometimes if we want to take a class we have to think about what that money could purchase in that product rather than taking the class. I missed out on taking a class 4 or 5 years ago from a well known coloring artist because it was way out of my price range. Even worse was the fact that I didn’t even own one marker for the class. It has literally taken years to build up my Copic markers. If it wasn’t for sales on items or coupons some of us would have very little. Sometimes there are items that are in our price range but the shipping charges are the same price as the item. Sorry, I think I chased a rabbit.ReplyCancel

When I see so many craft stores closing I fear this is a dying art. However, then I see the thousands of crafters on blogs and websites sharing their projects, ideas, etc. I think it would help for all of us crafters to be sure we teach our children and grandchildren this art. You’ll see how much fun it is to do this with the younger generations and they’ll love it!

Hi Becca. No, its not a lost art. Give a creative person a few minutes and ‘something’ will appear. Nearly every child loves to pick up a crayon & love of expression runs through every generation. It is just well hidden at times – especially when there is a computer game to play!ReplyCancel

In my generation (60+) most women are still crafting. It may be paper crafts, quilting, cross stitch, crochet, etc. I also see a lot of crochet, knitting, sewing, paper crafting and quilting in the 40+ age group. I don’t think the younger generation has as much time for crafting with their busy schedules but they enjoy it when they can.ReplyCancel

Crafting is changed so much over the years. I do not think it is a lost art but it is harder for people to discover the art of card making with so many stores closing and the big box stores not being hands on. p.s. (I was so focused on your card I forgot to answer the question) I know that companies need to keep selling, but I wish (pipe dream) that the world would slow a bit and not need a constant stream of new supplies. I am blessed with a wonderful playroom that is well stocked. The downside of going online to see what people are creating is that the online goal is to make us all want more….and more. If I never bought another thing for crafting (except paper and adhesives) and if I lived to 120, I wouldn’t be able to explore all the creative potential in the supplies I own.ReplyCancel

No, I don’t think crafting is a lost art. There are a lot of us out there who enjoy making things for the people we love. Technology keeps getting better and better and some of the new die cutting machines enable those who have trouble with their hands continue to do the necessary cutting. My grandma was crafting until about 2 months before she died at 96. Her projects got simpler as her vision started to fail, but she loved making things.ReplyCancel

I do not believe crafting is a lost art. It does change,evolve, wane and then double back around and reappear in a new vain. What would make it better is us. We need to not make it a competition. Not to lust after every ‘new’ thing, or compete for recognition. Savor the journey of finding out what you can do with what you have. And then you will know if the next new thing is truly an innovation, or just a makeover of something you already own.

Gorgeous card Becca. This card reminds me of my Mother-she loved roses but what reminds me most is she had a handkerchief that looks like the background paper. She always carried a hanky. As far as crafting I think that its still here with all of us that like to create. You walk into a store to look for a gift and there is really not that special gift. I enjoy crafting and I like that when I give a gift that I have made seeing the eyes of that person is what puts that finish touch on the gift. I don’t think it is lost. I craft with a group of ladies who sometimes bring their daughters or granddaughters. The young people are often more “into it” than us older folks. What I find really funny is when someone mentions learning a “new” technique or craft. For instance this “new” thing called quilling! My grandmother quilled! Crafting is definitely not a lost art. Most of my friends and family are crafting in some way, even the young ones.
I go to a lot of craft fairs, and they are always crowded with people showing great interest. Maybe crafting will change over time, but I think there will always be people enjoying and taking interest in making things with their own hands.ReplyCancel

What a joy to everyday watch someone who is passionate about keeping card making alive. I think we are training the young of our day to love crafts by doing them at scouts, VBS’s, art classes at community centers and such. I have a friend who is passionate about stamping and teaching Ukraine egg decorating to the young and adults at her local library, she is overwhelmed with the response of so many. We just have to share and get others involved with us as we create. Since God is the Master creator and He passed that on to us we can be assured He won’t let creativity fade away.ReplyCancel

I think most people who don’t craft and don’t have a friend or family member think it’s a dying art. But all who do it, know there are way more of it going on than non crafters believe. If you think about all the big craft stores like AC MOORE, JOANN, MICHAEL’S etc. Then all the small local stores. Add that to all the online stores sales… no I don’t think it’s dying. No I do not think it is a lost art. I see people every where making scrapbooks, cards, mixed media, jewelry, paintings of all kinds. I keep going but I think you get my drift. I just think that the younger generation at this time are to busy to do all this, there are exceptions of course. As they get older and have lived their lives they will start crafting as well I think, at least that is what I did. I hope it is around for a very long time or I will have wasted a lot I mean a lot of money on my wonderful crafts. I think if the cost was cheaper on some of these things that more people would be able to afford to do all the different kinds of crafts, I can not afford some of it myself.ReplyCancel

I don’t believe that crafting is a lost art, however, it’s not thriving as it once did. The ScrapMadeSimple channel owns a craft shop in CA. They recently announced a first joint venture with Ellison to provide a line of AFFORDABLE dies. The co owner Stacey is an amazing & compassionate person. Oh no! I think crafting is alive and well if the thriving craft market is anything to go by. It’s just that it seems to be focussed on the older generation. I’m not so sure that the ‘bug’ has caught on among the younger generation. But then we are all creative by nature and will always find some way to express it!ReplyCancel

Crafting will always be around, just modified every so many years. I wish some supplies would cost less but then I wish hamburger wasn’t $5 a pound. I think there will always be creative people to carry on. What would the world be if we were all alike.ReplyCancel

I am not sure that craft is a dying art, but I do think with the internet so many craft shops are closing and that is having a huge impact on where the younger people can see things. Lets hope as they get older they remember these crafts and have a go at them.

I sincerely trust that crafting never becomes a lost art. There is something inside many of us which just cries out to create. Perhaps crafting is not always ‘out of necessity’ as in former times, but has become a hobby for many. Encouraging people to be creative is a joy. In the group I run, members have said that they can lose themselves whilst making an item and then they have something to share with/show to/send to others. A handmade item shows the recipient that the sender has cared enough to give up precious time to make something special for them. I think that sharing your gifts as you do, Becca, encourages people to have a go at something that they might feel is beyond their capabilities or imagination. And that has a knock on effect, so blogs like yours are part of the movement to keep crafting very much alive!

I think crafting is always evolving because personal tastes change quickly. Years ago our ladies circles at Church had yearly craft fairs to raise mission money. We don’t do that now because it seemed people wanted to decorate with “store bought” items. Stamping and card making seem to have lasted the longest. Pinterest is changing crafts by supplying many diversified ideas.ReplyCancel

I don’t think crafting is a lost art. It would be nice though to have some more spare time in our busy lifestyle for it. I also think it would be great if our kids still had a weekly craft lesson at primary school like we used to. These days technology means they have much more to learn so it’s only when time allows for it.

I dont think it is a lost art form because my nephew is basically growing up seeing me his aunty crafting, making cards, designing, decorating frames, making paper baby shoes, punching out shapes, using ribbon. He is watching me constantly and now at the tender age of two has asked for crafty things like punches and stamps. Hes not strong enough to use the punches independently so we do it together punch out shapes and stick them in his doodle pad. He loves stickers so he uses my crafty stuff out of ‘my special room’ as he likes to call my craft room. He likes to sit at my craft table and do gluing and sticking as he puts it. I recently have bought him some dinosaur stampers because he likes stamping too. I bought the childrens version of stampers which you just take the lid off and stamp the image onto the paper and hes loving it. He now can stamp, use punches, decorate using stickers, and glue cut out die cuts into his doodle pad. He enjoys crafting so much and im so pleased he has this creative interest. So i feel like if we instill the basics into our children then we can definately carry on with creating a crafty future for our children and making sure our crafting skills are not lost and will follow through to our future generations xReplyCancel

Crafting isn’t a lost art. I make cards, but I’m also a quilter and it always amazes me how many young people are getting involved in it. There are some amazing Japanese crafters that do such intricate work. For me, I have to get the rest of my house organized so I can spend more with all the different crafts I want to do.ReplyCancel

I think you have to get to the kids early. I know when I was younger and my daughter was young there was time for sports which she loves to do But when she visited my mom, she would teach her projects, like making a wreath. I try to do the same thing. Harder when the other grandma nor parents are not into crafts. So I guess you try to find time when you can with kids. I have tried to encourage some crafty women to get together at church to teach other women. It takes time to learn how things work, so it should be on going, not just once a year. You can’t expect that everyone can instantly learn. I figured out bows from you. :)ReplyCancel

Unless paper disappears from our lives, I think paper crafting will be around. And if paper disappears, something else will appear to fill the void. I have friends who have taken up drawing, water coloring and knitting when they quit working. Blogs like yours are not only educational but also inspiring. I have trouble deciding which colors to use and seeing how you combine colors is helpful to me. I don’t think anything needs to be changed, younger people just need to put down their phones and not overschedule their kids so they are the time and energy to craft a bit together. I think this has to be my favorite card in the 30 Days of Giving so far Becca – it is just so beautiful and so elegant.

I think ‘handmade’ is actually making a comeback, but still fear ‘handwritten’ is in danger. I think more reasonable pricing would be a big help and perhaps more bloggers showing ways to do things without having to have every die and stamp set released every month would help.ReplyCancel

I don’t think that crafting is a lost art. It is changing over time and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I do think that many people “crafted” in the past because they had to make their own things and that is no longer the case for many. I do think that it is up to us to pass these things down to our children and grandchildren. Not only the art and the “how to,” but also the appreciation. Crafting is alive and well! I have spent the afternoon crafting with my granddaughters who are 10 and 8 years old. They truly amaze me. We started by piercing some of the Barbie doll’s ears (this was the girls’ idea) and making earrings out of straight pins and beads. They have been hand sewing clothes for the Barbie’s and even made mermaid tails for the dolls! They love using my markers for coloring, making cards, etc. I think they are hooked!!!ReplyCancel

I certainly don´t think, that craft is a lost art at all, and more and more younger people take it up again too. While neither my daughter or DIL´s have ever liked any crafting, then all my 7 granddaughters absolutely LOVE to do all kinds of crafting here with me, as soon as they get a chance. And they keeps on and on wanting to learn new things too, and like one here said earlier, just look at the craftshows, they´re filled to the brim with people, who like to learn about new things, techniques and products, but I do think, more of the younger crafters are more into digital crafting too thoug, but definitely also into ordinary crafting , where they learn to use their hands to create different things, they´ll like to have, and they also have lots of really great ideas too, so no I´m not at all worried about crafting getting a lost art.ReplyCancel

Here, where I live in New Zealand, as in many countries, the pace of life is such, and also the pressure to earn, that many cannot take the time to indulge in handicrafts. BUT what is a growing trend is that older women are now starting hobbies that have been denied them previously. The main thing is to keep going and making sure people are exposed to them

I still love doing homemade crafts and I know my family love receiving them but I think the up coming generation will phase them out to a certain degree cause they want the electronic stuff.ReplyCancel

I don’t believe crafting is a lost art yet but it’s definitely not as prominent as it used to be. Instant art and clothes purchases so easily conveniently nearby and every kind of toy or gadget easily accessible……there’s no need to make your own. A reflection of the times is the number of craft stores in your neighborhood. But like H. Clinton said….’it takes a village’……yes, education and exposure to crafting starts at home and school. A simple crochet lesson or drawing or decoupage or embroidery could open up the door to other talents and build from there. I don’t think crafting is a lost art. I find that a lot of people start crafting because of their budgets. They can’t afford something they have seen and try their hand at making one. The one thing that could make it better for me is access to supplies. You can see things online and in videos, but most times I need to see items in person to see if it works for me. You would think that a city like Savannah, Ga would have a papercrafting/ scrapbooking store. And sad to say no papercrafting/ stamping shows come to the area. Strange also because their is a huge art college here. There were stores here years ago but the only reason they closed were due to marriages and kids, etc. Not to lack of business. Boy, this question really makes you think about all our modern conveniences! I don’t use many kitchen gadgets.I hand cut all my vegetables-potatoes, carrots, celery, etc. I don’t use box mixes. Forgot to mention in earlier post, that I clean the oven with the spray cleaner instead of using self cleaning option. Quicker and when I’m done it’s clean. No follow-up needed to clean up the residue/ashes.ReplyCancel

The only thing I can think of is still having a dumb phone. It takes pics but that’s all. Now hubby is a different story – he does not know how to use the computer and doesn’t want to learn. Everything is done on the phone (ordering his supplies for his woodcraft projects) or bills are paid with paper checks. Pretty old-fashioned kinda guy; still love him!ReplyCancel

I wash dishes by hand as dont own a dish washer. Hang clothes on the washing line dont own a tuble dryer. I use a pestle and mortar for cooking as always cook and bake from scratch.ReplyCancel

I read books the old fashioned way not on a kindle or other electronic device. I like magazines too esp craft magazines for inspiration. Dnt download digi stamps do it the old fashioned way too.ReplyCancel

I love the die-cutting on this card and look forward to having a machine one day. There are some things that don’t work as well by hand!

The sentiment on many of my cards are hand written. It may take more time but allows me to have freedom of expression; size, style, and verbiage. I worked in a gift store that had a computer-driven calligraphy machine. Amazing machine and definitely superior if one is doing a lot of copies of text. The fact that a machine was invented to do this work (simulating handwriting) speaks to the value of the hand written word.
