Today I’m sharing a Christmas card that I’m adding to my stash.  No Design Paper on this one, instead a simple stamped background that is smudged with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  The greeting is stamped with pigment inks and embossed with clear embossing powder – a look that I love.  Lastly a little bit of piercing around the edges just for some added interest and four small pearls (I tried to leave them off but just couldn’t).

The center image is cut from Spellbinders Classic Oval Large layered on a  Spellbinders Classic Scalloped Oval Large and popped up for some dimension.   I’ve found that Christmas cards are an excellent opportunity to add burgundy velvet!

Well, as you can see, I’ve been bitten by the "inside" bug.   I’m surrounded by people who love to decorate the insides of their cards.  I have to give credit to Amy Sheffer and her blog Pickled Paper Designs; she has the most extraordinary cards and the most charming insides.  Also, Denise (Peanutbee) on the The Paper Landscaper – phenomenal cards with charming insides too (she flips the card inside out to photograph it).  I am so copying you gals.

That’s it for me today, but there’s more stuff coming.  In the next week or so I have another technique to show.  Also thanks so much for the people who leave comments, questions and awards.  I have to admit, I’m knee deep in stamping and trying to come up with new things.  I have not been the best at answering questions that are wrapped up in comments.  I plan to start a Q&A or FAQ page where I’ll answer questions and those who ask can look for the answers there.  It seems to be the best format for me because the same question is asked multiple times.  Also, I’m way behind on acknowledging awards – thanks so much for those who take the time to give an award and come back to leave a kind word.  I hope to start a separate page for those awards and all the award information so that those who give them know that I appreciate it so much.

Stay tuned, later today I’ll be back with some blog candy . . . while I was busy stamping my hits counter was silently clicking way.  I just noticed that it has topped the 900,000 hits mark for which I am speechless.  So, it’s time for me to get on the ball and show some thanks to the many who stop by every day.

My Dad is now 94 years old but in excellent health. My family all gather around him (3 sons, their wives, 16 grandchildren, and my sister and her family as my Dad reads the Christmas story to us from the chapter Luke in his Bible. He really doesn’t need the Bible as he can say it from memory. We then have prayer before opening our gifts. I’m sure this tradition will be carried on long after my Dad has gone home to life with our Lord.

I absolutely love your blog and check it every day. It is through you that I found the wedsite Our Daily Bread. I would buy every set if I could afford it. Absolutely love the ones I have. In fact, my Christmas card was from the set Joy to the World.ReplyCancel

Love the colors and the composition Becca. Your talents appear to be limitless as is your generosity in sharing.

I love bird images done in black. Very folk/primative. Gotta look for that stamp set although my cats just might attack the bird outline!

True story…. an artist friend in Santa Barbara California, who does illustrations for Bird Books and the local Natural History Museum, did a detailed feather by feather pencil sketch of a red tailed hawk.

Then after framing it he left the life size sketch on the easel while going to look for some dinner. When he came back he discovered his cat had jumped up and tried to grab the bird! While the claws didn’t rip the extra thick art paper he likes for sketches they did leave subtle indentations! He decided the work wasn’t saleable so he hung it in his study over the cat’s pillow (after covering it with glass).

When I was over for dinner one night I commented on the piece and he showed me the marks and told me the story. I offered to buy it then and there but he stood firm about not wanting to sell damaged goods. I told him the story was as priceless as his art work and that he should feel complimented that the cat couldn’t tell his work from the real thing! No luck…until a few months later I received the work as a birthday gift! Needless to say I wrote the story on a card and put it on the back of the drawing for future generations. My cat’s have tried the same thing but since the drawing is covered by glass they have to content themselves with stalking my cards instead!

Good ideas for blog additions as well!

Merry Christmas my feather friend! – JeanReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
I love your elegant cards. You’re so talented and such an inspiration to me with my creating.

This is simply beautiful. I love all of your work and visiting your blog. I was showing your site to a co-worker yesterday. She was just in awe of your cards.ReplyCancel

My daughter asked me to pull together something for her friends young daughter, so I decided to make her a little Christmas tree for her bedroom.  It’s full of birdies and it’s so sweet in real life!!   I can make different birdies for her for Valentines Day, for Easter and many of the upcoming holidays!

The birdies are made with Spellbinders Nested Birds Die.  It’s so easy to make the birds except I didn’t want them to be so two dimensional – I thought about it for a while and came up with wings made from Spellbinders Classic Scalloped Paisley.   The detail is difficult to see in this photo but I have taken some pictures of the individual little birds.    Believe me, the entire project took longer to photograph than it took to make :)

This is the largest bird that I used to top off the little tree.

Next are the medium sized birds . . .

These are the smallest birds . . .

Recipe:
Paper:  K&Co Christmas
Accessories:  Spellbinders Nested Bird Die, Spellbinders Classic Scalloped Paisley Die, Bling, Gold Cord, Ornament Hangers

I cut two birds and two wings for each ornament.  On both sides I slit the bird horizontally just large enough for the scalloped paisley to fit in partially, folded the inside of the wing down and secured it with tape.    I sandwiched a small transparent hanger reinforcement in place before glueing the two sides together.   I then hung the ornament with a curly ornament holder.

Thanks for stopping by . . . I’ve been running around like a maniac and as I’m sure it is for many, life is just unpredictable right now.  Even though posts will be at odd times, I do hope to be creating!!

You are truly a paper wizard! I can’t wait to see the future holiday birdies! So sweet!ReplyCancel

  • Jean FitchDecember 16, 2008 - 12:15 am

    Dear Becca,

I love this sweet tree. Reminds me of the “feather” trees I grew up with on the East Coast. We had one or more out for most holidays and made tiny ornaments to mix in with crystals borrowed from chandeliers upstairs where no one but us would notice they were missing. Thanks for stirring old and cherished memories.

One question – where did you find the little tree? It’s so much nicer than some of the “imitation” feather trees I’ve seen. Perfect for a mantle or small table. Seeing your birds in flight will have the little girl “singing” for joy every morning. And with all the popular heart punches and dies out there I can only imagine what you will do with it for Valentines!

Hmmm… maybe if I took some dowels and covered them with floral tape and with evergreens wrapped round….hmmmm….nope…I’ve yet to see evergreens in my yard that look like feathers! On the other hand holly branches and their prickly points would keep my cats from playing with the paper birds :-)

Joyeux Noël cher Becca! Merci pour l’inspiration! – Jean FitchReplyCancel

Isn’t this the cutest ever?  Today I attended a party with all my stamping buddies and we normally exchange handmade gifts.  Our friend Beth stunned us all by presenting each of us with this little work of art!  What talent!!!

Unbelievably Santa is made from a light bulb…yep!   That crafty woman painted at least 12 of these.  That’s not all though.   The little round box that Santa is in was from the $1 bin at Michael’s but was too plain for her taste.  She transformed it into a santa box….sigh…you should see it in real life!

I just had to share. . .

Thanks Becca for helping me figure out what do do with all those burned out bulbs I couldn’t stand to toss into the landfill.

I knew there had to be the perfect idea out there. Hmmm…Maybe decoupage stamp images too??? Maybe texturing compound to create a fat and bulbous Frosty the snowman with lots of swirls???

I can’t wait to CASE this one. Thanks for sharing and tell Beth she is a wonder. Bright and shining ornament gives light and life to dead bulbs…WoW! – Un bonne idée!
