My heart just melted . . .I have to tell you this story.  I’ve been married for 26 years and today my husband surprised me in such a way that my heart just melted.  It happens all the time but this was a really big one.  I was gone most of the day and had left him at home – there was tons of stuff I needed to do.  Whenever I finally did get home he told me he had to make a confession.  What?  I was standing back in the bedroom and he opened up his dresser drawer and pulled out a small pile of papers.  He said I’ve been working on this card for you and I got stuck . . . THUD!!  After I got up off the floor, I looked at what he had in his hands and it was all of the pieces of the above card, minus the ribbon and minus the wording and plus some other punched borders he was going to try out.  You see he had gone over to my studio and knew what he wanted to do but didn’t know where to find the items.  Had he not hit that obstacle, he would have finished without me knowing it.  I took the pieces in my hand and looked them over incredulously . . . I realized that when he would come out to talk to me while I was stamping, he was really watching me.  He was mentally recording how to do things and where I stored things.  You can’t imagine how long I was speechless.  And, you can’t imagine how long I smiled.  I’m telling you, my heart simply melted.  So he asked, can you help me find the other things I need?  I told him, "For Sure!"  He said, now you can’t post this!!  Then I said "Of course honey, I won’t."

So we went over to the studio and located the JustRite Letters for his sentiment and the ribbon.  I know what you are thinking.  You’re thinking that I put my hands on this card.  Well, I did, but only to tie that piece of red ribbon.  Otherwise this was all my sweeties doing – he knows how to use Spellbinders and from watching me he used an aquapainter and colored that rose on his own!  Not bad for a first attempt, hunh?  This is why 26 years has flown by and how I know I’m more blessed than is humanly possible.

Here’s his recipe:
Stamps:  Flourishes – I Love Roses, JustRite – Brayton Alphabet
Paper:  Bazzill, 140lb Watercolor and ????
Ink:  SU Ruby Red, SU Always Artichoke, Black Brilliance
Accessories:  Ribbon, Spellbinders Tags 5, Spellbinders Scalloped Heart, EK Success Heart Punch, Brads, aquapainter

What can you say!! It’s not the beautiful finished project; it’s not the colors chosen; it’s not the layout (which is fantastic); it’s not the ability to use a die cut machine or other tools; it’s not even the sentiment – it’s the fact that he is so in love with you that he wanted to reach deep in his heart to try to express his feelings for you by ‘creating’ something with his own hands!! How blessed you are! I’ll be married 26 years in April and mine is great, too (although I couldn’t see him doing this-he wouldn’t know where to begin to look for a thing in my room, but he makes up in many, many other ways).ReplyCancel

He plays with the punches, stamps and has even made a few of my sons scrapbook pages. He is a woodworker/carpenter so he fully understands the need to create and play too! Becca,, I check your blog daily and absolutly love your cards. I get so many ideas and inspiration from your site. But today tops all of them. Not because it is the most beautiful or the most intricate card but because its one of the most heartfelt and sincere cards ever. My dh is my best critic, my encourager, and cheerleader but he would never attempt to make me a card. He and WalMart are friends in the card section. I save every one he gives me because I know that the ones he picks out are from his heart. But, to have my hubby even pick up a stamp would just drop me. And we have been married 41 years. What a wonderful memory for both of you. God IS good.ReplyCancel

A week before Valentines day my sweetie ended up in the hospital having a quaruple bypass and valve replacement. I surely didn’t expect anything for valentines. Just like your husband, my partner has been watching me….even though I am just starting to learn myself. When he came out of surgery…the next day even though highly medicated, he told me he had secretly made me a card and hid it in the closet, but not to look until Valentines day. Here is a man with a VERY BIG HEART……. I will share your story with him today at the hospital.

You truly have the world’s most thoughtful and romantic husband. My husband is supportive and proud of my creations, but I don’t think he would ever attempt this. What a sweet man. Tell him we all said he did a fabulous job!

I love that man! I was hoping my hubby would do something like that but guess what – I got one even better – since I don’t generally clean up after myself, he came into my studio and cleaned the laminate floor on his hands and knees – while I was making his valentine card! Now that’s true love! Sounds like we have a couple of keepers here. We are going on 29 years in May. Thanks for sharing this special story Becca – and Happy Valentines Day!ReplyCancel

that is the cutest and most wonderful story ever! My husband looks over my shoulder occasionally to offer suggestions or ‘inventions’ to make my life easier, but the most he has offered (and I am not complaining mind!) is to pick a card off of our card program on the computer and print it out for me :)ReplyCancel

  • BarbFebruary 16, 2009 - 10:04 pm

Awwww, that is such a precious and sweet story. He did a fabulous job for his first card. I would have thought he had been making cards for years and actually, I would have guessed it to be one of yours, so he is a really good student in observation :). Now you know you will have to do a scrapbook page and place that card as the star of the page with the entire story journaled. What a wonderful, wonderful story to preserve for many future generations of your family. Thanks so much for sharing your story Becca. God bless you both.

Okay, I’m working on some projects so I didn’t have a project ready to post.  Do you know that that means?  That means, I’m going to dig into my stash of things I’m really not sure about sharing.  I suppose that every blogger has such a stash.  I’ll preface this project by saying that "it’s different".   So many of you often say that you like how much I think outside of the box.  Well, I’ll admit, this is out of the box and over into the next box, lol!!   Truth be known though, I like it – it’s different!!

This is something I put together to send to CHA.  I’m not sure if it was on display or not . . . if it was, I’m totally amazed that someone didn’t come back to me and say hey, that thing you made . . . it’s different!    I don’t know why but these little chairs are something I absolutely adore.  I have one in my studio where it hangs on the wall and it displays my favorite wooden stamp of the moment.  I have one in my bedroom that has a bowl where I keep my rings, I have one in my family room that has a figurine of a cat laying down.   I had one on my desk that had my pencil cup on it.  You get the picture . . . I like these little chairs.  I  took the one from my desk and thought it would be a neat thing to make it into a rolodex.   Yeah, you were  probably wondering what the heck is was.

The chair was plain, unpainted wood so I painted it with ivory paint and distressed it.   Oh, did you notice the pages of the rolodex and the notecards in the seat were made from the new Spellbinders Octagons and Scalloped Octagons?  I love that shape!!

So humor me today. . . is it really that different?

I am at work 9 – 11 hours a day, and I have my office decorated in “my” style and they are OK with it, but some of the guys say it’s too Frou Frou, and don’t stay too long. It even smells “girly” because I have a clean cotton fragranced smelly jelly out. This “Rolodex” would go PERFECTLY with my collection! Wonder how much you’d charge me to part with it??? Hmmmm, or do you think it could be blog candy? Silly me, I could probably make it if I would take the time…..but teasing aside, it is absolutely stunning. Keep thinking “waaaaaay outside the box,” it gives the rest of us a goal to achieve. I wanna be Becca when I grow up!

    Love and God Bless,

Remember the wooden chairs we made as kids? They were made with popsicle sticks. Can’t recall how at the moment, but it might be a frugal way of making many for say, a baby shower?! Yup, I can see the imagine in my mind’s eye right now :) Baby’s name, weight, etc.

Are you ready for Valentines Day?  It seems like it was just New Years and lo and behold a shocking look at the calender made me spring into action so that my sweetie will have a little surprise waiting for him on Valentines Day.   This is a flower bouquet very similar to a cookie bouquet he sent me one year.    The bouquet is made of 5 flowers and on each side of the flower I’ve stamped the reasons I love him so much.   Below you can see both sides of the flowers.  First the front side:

Then the flip side:

I’ll take you through the process of how I created them.  You will see that the flowers were made with a corner punch (are you surpised?) and the technique that I’ve used here is the same that I used on this Valentines Day Card HERE, it just looks different because of the way the punch was used.  I call this technique "Corner Punching an Interior Frame."

JustRite Frilly Flower Bouquet Supply List
JustRite Brayton Font Ribbon Scissors
Harmony Classic Circle Stamper II Ensemble Design Paper Glue Dots
Harmony Classic Oval Stamper II Ensemble Assorted Cardstock Popsicle Sticks
Spellbinders Classic Ovals Large Versamark Filler Grass
Spellbinders Classic Scalloped Circles Large Embossing Powders Clear Paint Can
Spellbinders Standard Circles Large
EK Success Punch  Pop Dots
Spellbinders Labels Four Small Heart Punch

Okay, here we go. . .

For each frilly flower I stamped two sentiments using my JustRite Harmony Classic Round Stamper III with the heart border and the Brayton Font to make up the words of my choice.  Once stamped, I embossed each with embossing powder then cut/emboss each sentiment with my Spellbinders Standard Circle – the circle I used here is 2 3/8" in diameter.   I made a total of 10 sentiments for 5 flowers.

Next I cut a piece of cardstock 5 ½" x 5½" and cut a circle in the center with my Spellbinders Standard Circle measuring 1 7/8".  I needed 5 of these for my frilly flowers used an EK Success Corner Punch to cut the frills border from the interior circle.

First I inserted the punch flip side so I could see the bottom and punched once. (See below)
For the next punch, to get my orientation, I inserted it with the punch right side up and next to the hole that I just punched.  (See below)
Then I flipped the punch and cardstock over so that I could again see the bottom side of the punch, aligned according to the first punch adusting spacing as necessary.  (See below)

Then I completed the second punch.  (See below).  Continue this around the circle until there is no more room to insert another set of two punches.  (A word to the wise – practice first on plain paper to get the feel of how much spacing you will need.  I after a trial, I am able to judge it by sight – you will be able to also!)

Once you’ve completed punching around the circle, there are several clips that need to be made to free your frilly flower.  Start by clipping at the tip of each petal.  (See below)

Next, clip at the base of each petal.  (See below)

Your frilly flower or your border is now free.  (See below)  I was able to do this process with each of my corner punches and the each make a fabulous and unique looking frame.

Now it is time to assemble each flower.    I cut/embossed scalloped circles for layering from my Spellbinders Scalloped Circles Large.  The scallped circle I used was 2 5/8"

Add pop dots and glue dots as shown below.  Keep the center of your scalloped circle clear as the popsicle stick needs to fit.

Stack the elements in a sandwich beginning with your first sentiment.  Add Scalloped Circle.  Add popsicle stick.  Add Frilly Flower.  Add Scalloped Circle.  Add second sentiment.  Finish by adding a piece of ribbon tied in a knot and secured onto stick with a glue dot.  (See below)

Here is the finished flower.  (See below)

To pull the bouquet together I used a clear paint can, some filler grass and floral foam.    (See below) I filled the can with the filler grass almost to the top, then arranged the flowers in the floral foam then put the arrangement in the can and disguised it with the grass.

The final touch for my arrangement was a label for my can stamped with "10 Thing I {Heart} About U" using the Brayton Font and my Harmony Classic Oval Stamper II.  I picked the dotted frame which matched the ribbon I was using.  I stamped and embossed this in red to match the embossing from the flowers.  The sentiment was then cut out with my Spellbinders Classic Oval Large, using the second largest oval, then mounted on a Spellbinders Labels Four die cut.

Check the the picture at the beginning of my post for final presentation.  It was truly a fun project and I hope you liked seeing how to make a new type of frame.

Good evening, Becca- a great project and a great tutorial. I’m just home from holiday and I’ve had a wonderful time browsing and checking out the fabulous projects and tutorials you’ve produced while I’ve been away. I have not commented on each individual project but I would like to say that they are all superb, as usual, of course.ReplyCancel
