WRBF-4940-2016
Hi there friends, reality conspired yesterday.  My computer would not crunch through the video and even though my voice is back, I still wasn’t feeling up to par.  I’ve learned, everything doesn’t happen in my time, so I let go.  Today is another day and I have a new little hero to introduce :-)  I hope you enjoy the video and I hope it will make you brave enough to try the things you think you cannot do.

Designer Tip:  Make sure you allow time for your flower petals to dry.  Here are three ways:

  • You can let them air dry.
  • You can use a heat gun.
  • You can dry them by batches in your oven set to 200 degress for about 7 minutes*.  This is the method I use and it makes the paper I use feel like eggshells.  I use Neenah Classic Crest 80 lb Smooth Solar White Paper

**Disclaimer – Use oven at your own risk, never leave oven unattended, not appropriate for unattended children.

Day of Giving – Friday er, Saturday
It’s no coincidence that I’m pulling a spring look in my cards – I adore spring and get one of my greatest inspiration pushes right after winter when the relentless teasing of spring begins.  I give in and start to think about the holidays and occasions coming up.  Mothers Day is high on the list and we have two months to consider what we’ll make!  I’m sharing a card with some of my favorite older templates – Spellbinders Enchanted Labels Twenty Eight Spellbinders Elegant Labels FourSpellbinders Classic Ovals SM, Spellbinders Classic Ovals LG, Spellbinders Back to Basics Tags. If you are new to my blog, I love to create hinged cards that have the same shape on the front as on the back – this is an often asked question so if you are curious, I have a tutorial —–> HERE

The signals of spring
In the mean time, today is Day of Giving Friday Saturday (we’ll be back to Friday next week).  If you’re not familiar with Day of Giving Friday, every Friday I give away a card to a reader who leaves a comment – here’s a link to my FAQ’s just check out #11.    For your comment today – What is your sure sign signal that spring has arrived?  What does it inspire you to do?
post-header-bottom

Thanks for stopping by today – what do you think of my hero?  Dig in your stash and give it a try!!

LOL! Here is Africa we’re moving towards Autumn and Winter, but a sure sign of Spring where I live is the sun shining earlier in the morning and not having to wear my jersey! Glad you’re feeling better xxReplyCancel

Beautiful card with the lavender and ribbon. Sorry you’ve been sick…i have the throat thing too…not fun but can’t stare at it or you feel sicker! Signs of spring may be the cabin fever even my cat is exhibiting by following me around wanting to be entertained. She can’t go outside in a foot of snow so mamas the next best thing! We’re all pushing thru it with more sunny days too as a promise of more to come. Time to get cracking in the artroom!ReplyCancel

I am feeling the spring today in Oklahoma. It is to be 74 degrees today. Hubby and I sat on our porch to eat lunch and he also had grilled the meat. I found one daffodil peeking out calling “spring” to me!

    Beautiful card today!

for me it’s when the flowers begin to bloom. we live at the base of a small hill and it’s nice to watch the blooms roll down the hill. this year we had our Bradford pear tree removed so I guess spring won’t get all the way down the hill this year. :)ReplyCancel

Wonderful video if a bit disappointing as I don’t have the machine or dies (and they aren’t in the budget right now). BUT I see the idea working with other flower petal dies!!

    Hi Becca

What a beautiful card I love the lavender ribbon (my favorite color. Thank you for sharing the video it does help so much especially when learning something new. I am one that learns with visual and able to stop the and go back if need. Hope you get feeling better as the days go by. I know spring is just around the corner as some trees and flowers have tiny little buds. Here in Colorado the month of March is when we get most of our snow so hopefully the trees and flowers do not suffer the snowfall too much. Have a good weekend.ReplyCancel

  • Doreen RitchieFebruary 27, 2016 - 2:41 pm

Beautiful card, as always. I love hinged cards but sometimes, it’s difficult to get the die to cut through two layers! Signs of Spring are the daffodils blooming and because of our mild weather lately, they have come up early, then we get a frost, so confusing everyone, including the spring flowers! With the weather warming up, it means we can leave that extra layer off when walking along the beach and enjoying the fresh air.

    Hi Becca,
Thank you for this great tip. I have been making more paper flowers. I have made a small bridal bouquet for my niece’s shower and and an arrangement in a crystal compote for another niece. I have such fun and your tip just gives me another choice for variation. Beautiful work, as usual. Thanks for pasting.

The springtime signal for me is when the daffodils, hyacinths and muscari appear in my garden. They have been there for many many years as a chapel once stood where my house is now. When clearing the garden we found a wall left when the chapel was demolished. We were very lucky to find photos of the old chapel and we now have them hanging on the wall in our home.
A beautiful card, Becca, I must use this die more often.ReplyCancel

Spring has come to my neck of the woods when the trees start showing leaf buds, the birds start returning and the glorious bulbs start erupting from the earth (also my husband starts getting the RV ready) and of course snow tires come off! The video is so helpful with the technique as well is showing the actual size of the flowers. Guess I’m going to have to purchase a set of measuring spoons for the craft room, lol! Your card is so beautiful . . . I do love the soft feminine design.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card! To me, Spring has Sprung when I see daffodils growing! Today is Feb. 27th of course – but I haven’t seen any daffodils yet! I don’t know if I just haven’t been driving in areas where they are planted or grow wild or if Spring hasn’t arrived here in South Louisiana yet! We have had an extremely mild Winter but it has been in the 30s at night the last week! So I guess Winter is still pushing back on Spring! I watched the video on hinged cards and will be using your suggestions.

I tend to make 4.25″ x 5.5″ cards just to be economical as I’m retired but I do love your larger cards! It just occurred to me that for special occasions, i.e., birthdays, I could make larger cards, and stick with the smaller ones when I have bunches of cards to make, i.e., Christmas, other holidays.

Thanks so much for sharing your talents! I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog and viewing your videos.ReplyCancel

Spring here is eternal. It’s a wee bit hard to tell the difference in seasons except the change of temperature of perhaps 5 degrees cooler from ‘winter’ into ‘spring’. We notice different orchids bloom during the winter and then spring and summer. So it’s pretty much constant weather year round. Consider moving here part time so you can enjoy our balmy weather, sunny days and constant trade winds. Aloha.ReplyCancel

My first sign that spring is sprung: my wisteria & a few other plants burst out with little green pops, my peach tree looks like it is a mini tree of pink blossoms with no leaves. It then makes me purchase wild flower seeds and sweet pea seeds and get them into the ground ASAP.

    Such a pretty card, Becca.
So sorry you’re still under the weather. Do hope you pick up quickly and are soon firing on all cylinders.
A sure sign of spring on the way in the UK, is the appearance of daffodils. We have snowdrops first in January/February, crocuses next in February and then daffodils in March. But this year we had daffodils out in January, before even the first snowdrop dared show its head!! I can’t ever remember this happening before!
The sight of the first spring flowers coupled with the lengthening days draws me outside and raises the spirits!

Another stunning card Becca. I totally enjoyed your video and I got to watch the other one on the hinged card as well. Great work.
A sure sign around here that spring has arrived (OR is at least coming) is our Anniversary. Spring is my fav. season so I thought it was only fitting to start our new life together in the spring of the year. In April it will be 37 years.ReplyCancel

    Good morning Becca,
Oh how i wish i had found your blog 19months ago when i could have still made this beautiful card for my Mum and now she will only see it if she is looking down. My Mum loved anything that we made for her as i found when clearing out our home as she had cards that my twin brother Jim and I had made her oh so many years previous. She loved beautiful things but didn’t envy what she didn’t have but she was like your card, so delicate and soft looking but had the stamina of 10 men and a boy if it came down to it. Thank you Becca for showing us this piece of beauty and since our Mothers day is in a few days time i think i will make this for Mum and place it at the cemetery with her flowers.
For me the first notion of spring is seeing the wee bulbs starting to poke their heads through the ground to see what is above that they are missing. The nights getting lighter and it being 5:30 or so pm before needing to shut the curtains and put on the lights. These for me are they signs of new life stirring into a softer, warmer day with the sun coming out to shine even when the temperature is still at freezing and below.
I hope that you have a lovely day flower and that you are feeling stronger and better with each passing hour that goes by.
    Love and crafty hugs

Hi Becca. This is such a beautiful card and yes it certainly feels like spring. The video is awesome…what a fantastic idea!!! I hope you are feeling better real soon. My beautiful card arrived in the mail and I feel blessed to own one of your gorgeous creations. THANK YOU. When the days get longer and the forsythia bloom, I know Spring is in the air. It inspires me to get outdoors and just enjoy everything that is beginning to bloom.

    Have a beautiful day!ReplyCancel

Morning Becca, Just watched your video, this is a fantastic idea using measuring spoons, and it creates beautiful petals and flowers, Genius !! I love your card, so beautiful and elegant.
The first signs of spring, to me, are when the crocus and daffodils show their heads through the soil, and it is something I yearn for (I’m not a Winter person haha). It is so inspiring that yesterday afternoon I cut my front grass and did all my borders and my hubby ‘forked’ the grass afterwards and brushed up. We were both feeling our age afterwards, and both our backs were complaining bitterly, but the front garden looks lovely and has benefited from our hard work, which gives us satisfaction.
Lots of love from Patricia xxReplyCancel

Oh, I love getting tips on how to use common things in crafting that make it easier and better!! Thanks – They’re sooo beautiful!!

It’s hard to tell when spring has arrived in South Florida as we have flowers all year round. Redbuds, crocuses and robins were my indicators when we lived up north. Here, the best sign that spring has arrives is that traffic lightens up and the beach is less crowded as all the snowbirds go back home. lol!ReplyCancel

Beautiful card, Becca! Spring has already started here in South Texas! The wildflowers are beginning to bloom, the trees are putting on leaves, and the birds are singing their heads off. Plus, the days are already in the 80’s! My favorite time of year!ReplyCancel

Fab card as always Becca. Spring has sprung for me when the days lengthen and brighten and the bulbs start flowering. I think spring and autumn are my favourite seasons. Fab video. TFS. Must buy some metal measuring spoons for this. My cooking ones are plastic! Are you doing a video on making the card caddy? I can’t work out from your description how to place the linen fabric. I suspect it’s down the length and back on itself just under half way up again with the ribbon and lace on top of that half piece. Does that make sense?!….I am planning to have a go at making one of these as yours looks fab.ReplyCancel

What a genius you are, Becca! Those spoon flowers are incredibly beautiful, and I would never have dreamed they would be so quick to complete. I’m going out to buy some new measuring spoons today! Thank you! As to the first sure sign of spring, it has to be flocks of robins in my back yard. Every year they stop in on their way back North. It cheers my heart, and generally inspires me to get busy making a bird themed project in my studio.ReplyCancel

Always love your how-to videos and aren’t you the clever one using measuring spoons to shape these flowers. Such a fabulous idea and I am in luck. I have that exact set and they are not my favorites to use in the kitchen so I can easily donate them to my crafts.

I always know when spring is nearing when all of the wildlife comes alive. You start seeing all the rabbits, squirrels, birds and butterflies and even the coyotes doing their happy dances in the early mornings. And at night the owls are doing their mating calls. It is also time to get out into the garden and de-weed and prep for spring planting. I just throw on my shorts grab my gardening tools and a nice mug of tea and head out their in the early morning to do all my gardening chores while watching nature at it finest.
    Love your card as always.

Love this Mother’s Day Card. WOW! Spoon Flowers. Who would have “thunk-it”? Becca of course! Becca you are so clever. Thanks for the video. I’m not sure about drying the flowers in the oven! From the photos of the wedding dress, I did not have a clue that the flowers on the dress were paper. Absolutely AMAZING! Now to your questions for this week: What is your sure sign signal that spring has arrived? I have several signs that I eagerly look for: 1) I listen to hear the bird’s trying out their Spring song/s. 2) When the Forsythia, aka Yellow Bell, begin showing color. I have to be careful with the sign of the Forsythia here in the mountains, because many years this shrub gets hurt by the late winter’s cold. Next question: What does it inspire you to do? I am so ready for Spring when it arrives here for the winters are long, cold, and mostly frozen. I do not get out much when things are frozen. So by the time that signs of Spring start bursting out all over, I am ready to be outdoors. I enjoy working in the flower gardens and visiting as many garden centers as I can -atleast within a fifty mile radius. Oh, such beautiful flowers all in bloom. And the fragrance is devine. Oh, my, I must stop writing about Spring for I will get “Spring Fever” way too early in this part of my state. I still have snow on the ground with more snow forcasted for this week. Hope you are feeling much better.ReplyCancel

  • DaleFebruary 28, 2016 - 10:46 pm

Gift Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Layered Blooms Contour Die - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Good morning!!  I’m excited to show you a little gift I made or perhaps I should say ‘made up’ – let me explain.  I often send cards to my girls and on my last visit I was so tickled to see they keep these cards on display.   I told them they didn’t have to do that for me and they sweetly informed me they do that for themselves – they said they like looking at them. Well imagine that :-)  I’ve been trying to think of a novel way for them to display the cards so that they can easily display the most current one.

Linen and Lace

So, I came up with this Lace and Linen Hoop adorned with flowers.  My thought was to create a pocket so that the back leg of a card can be slipped into the lace pocket and when ready for the next card, just pull it out and put the next one in! The hoop adds a sweet bit of decoration and can be placed on a stand on a desk or can be hung on the wall in an office.  Here’s the card from yesterday, perfect fit ;-)

Gift Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Layered Blooms Contour Die - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Layered Blooms – Contour Die.

It is made with Spellbinders Contour Die – Layered Blooms.  This is one of my most favorite dies and I used it extensively at CHA!  If you remember the wedding dress, this is the row of flowers that went around the bottom and up the shoulder.  I’m asked all the time, so I’ll offer a recommendation – if you are just beginning to add steel rule dies to your collection, this is a great one to get started with.  It’s a basic die that will get many uses and it is roughly the same cost as a thin die set.  I’ll be doing a tutorial with this die tomorrow and will show you how to use it and be able to get the same results on an easy flower every time :-)

(Note: Your current machine may accept Contour (Steel Rule) Dies – check it out to be sure.  The Spellbinders Platinum Machine is able to accommodate Contour (Steel Rule) Dies.)

How It’s Made

This project was as simple as pie and took me about 30 minutes.  I purchased a 9″ hoop from Joann Fabrics along with 1/3 yard of lace and 1/3 yard of linen and ribbons from my stash.

  1.  I doubled my linen, starched and ironed the small piece then added my lace on top positioning it so that it would fall midway the hoop.
  2.  I laid a small length of silk ribbon and printed ribbon across the top to stabilize the opening of the pocket (not glued, not sewed).
  3.  I positioned my hoop, closure at top and seated it over the ribbon, lace, linen sandwich and tightened the top of the hoop with a set of pliers (strong hands would do just fine).
  4.  I hot glued three flowers made using the Layered Blooms Contour Die on to the right side of the hoop.
Flower 1 – largest flower at top – is made with 4 large petals, 2 medium petals, 1 small petal – 2.5″ diameter.
Flower 2 – medium flower on left – is made with 3 large petals, 2 medium petal, 1 small petal – 2″ diameter.
Flower 3 – small flower on right – is made with 2 large petals, 1 medium petal, 1 small petal – 1.25″ diameter.
  5. I poked loops of ribbon into the crevices between the flowers and glued with a hot glue gun to simulate a bow.
  6. I trimmed excess fabric flush with top of hoop.  If desired, run a bead of glue or hot glue around the crack between hoops to secure the hoop.
  7. To finish, I topped it with a bow.

Other uses – Flower 1 is appropriately sized for the top of 3″ gift box such as this one I created HERE

Flower 2 or Flower 3 are appropriately sized for cards either alone or as a cluster.

I love it that hoops are popular again!!  This was a simple project that gave me a great sense of accomplishment!

Bravo! We must all have hoops in craft storage. My favorite places to hunt down items like this is when I am in the old neighborhoods of orginal home owners. I find a treasure trove of old ribbons, lace, buttoms and great card items. I have some beautiful lace, pretty sure linen too hiding in a basket away from the eyes of Mr Car, who is wanting me to get rid of my fabric. Alass a use for these stowed away items. :) beautiful stunning hoop.ReplyCancel

Good morning sweet friends!  I’m popping in to share a card today.  This card made me think about how we display the cards we are given, so come back tomorrow and you’ll get to see what I created from that brainstorm – and I was quite happy with it!!  Please forgive that I seem to be stuck on the same color palette, but I wanted to color some roses so this is what evolved.

Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Penny Black Petal Power, Penny Black - Snippets, Spellbinders Basket Weave 3D Embossing Folder, Spellbinders Framed Canvas, Spellbinders 5 x 7 Matting Basics A, Spellbinders Imperial Square - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Aren’t the flowers gorgeous?  I used Penny Black Petal Power and simply colored each rose with a Victorian Velvet Distress Marker, lightly spritzed with water and stamped.  After stamped, I decided I wanted to deepen some of the color so I scribbled some color down on my silicone mat using an Aged Mahogany Distress Marker.  With a wet paint brush I picked up a smidgen of the color and added it here and there.

On top of my base layer I used Spellbinders Basket Weave 3D Embossing Folder.  On top of that another embossing folder called Spellbinders Framed Canvas.  A rectangular frame using Spellbinders 5  x 7 Matting Basics A.  In the upper corners I used a two ornate corners from Spellbinders Imperial Square.  Although it is tiny, the sentiment can be stamped right along the lower right edge of the frame using Penny Black Snippets.

Yes, your roses on this card are GORGEOUS! You did a wonderful job of painting and shading them. Your card is sensational. Oh, tomorrow will be the big reveal. I can hardly wait that long. Your teasing with little tidbits the last few days has my curiosity piqued! By the way, I would like to thank you for telling us here on the blog how you construct your cards. A special THANK YOU for linking the supplies that you use on your cards. I like to click on the link you offer us. That way I get educated about what dies and/or stamps, as well as papers will work together and what they look like in the package. Seeing them and your lovely cards make me want each one that you have used in your card design. I now have a long list of “wants”. Have the birds started to sing their Spring songs around your home? I think I heard a chorus the other day myself even though I know winter is still here in the mountains. Take care my friend.ReplyCancel

When the Pecan trees bud out you know that the cold weather is over. The Jonquils, Paper Whites, Japanese Magnolia, Yellow Forsythia, Yellow Jasmine, Dog Wood, Red Bud, Azaleas, and Tulips all blooming give me Spring Fever and I then want to go outside and dig in the dirt. When I am worn out from digging in the dirt then I come in and make floral cards. Spring is my favorite time of the year.ReplyCancel
