NYT Best Sellers List – uh – Look Out!!

Oh boy do I have something unique to share with you!!!  Can’t show the pictures yet because you won’t know what you are looking at, so let me back up a little bit.  (It’s a little bit long but I promise, there are pictures in the post :-))  A couple of weeks ago I got an email from Creating Keepsakes and Shutterfly that caught my attention.  It seems that Shutterfly now does little  photo books as well as pictures.  On second look, it was an offer to make a photo book – for free.  Well, you know "for free".  I immediately went looking for the catch but didn’t find one.  My only thought was that CK and Shutterfly were pushing this so that you could try it out. Well, that was some time in May and the offer did not expire until midnight on June 21st – shucks I had plenty of time to figure it all out.  So on June 21st I was checking emails and that same email caught my eye again.  I forgot all about this offer and there were only a couple of hours left before it expired — yikes!!

So, I decided I didn’t have anything to lose.  I thought even if I only get half way through, it’s free, right?!?  Well this is the result of that frenzy of activity and I must say that the entire experience as well as the delivery that came to my door was total serendipity.  It’s not perfect and I actually had no time to prepare so this is what I did.    I needed pictures, lots of pictures.  Aha!!  I have tons of blog pictures.  Ewww, lots of slots for captions.  Aha!  I have quotes.  By the way, how long does it take to fill twenty pages full of pictures and captions in a book?  So in the space of about two hours – part of which was spent mounting the slight learning curve and navigating, I literally threw a book together. Well enough of the blah, blah, blah.  This is my first attempt . . .

ETA:  Shutterfly was kind enough to contact me with a direct link to this product – if you’re interested in taking a peek just click on the link: photobooks

More than 60 pictures later, I was thrilled that the order went through and there really was no catch.  I was like a little kid waiting for it to arrive.  My own photo book!!  Some of the pictures are dark, some were not at a high enough resolution, there was no time to do cropping, no worries, I decided my freebie was a trial.  It’s sitting on the coffee table in the living room (smirk).  When people ask me what I like to do and I say making cards and then they give me that blank stare — I’ll hand them my book, ha ha.   I imagine coming across it a couple of years from now and reliving the first two years of blogging.  I’m definitely going to keep my eyes peeled for more special offers.  When I get time, I’ll actually do a photo book with family photos.   In the end I think I paid $8.75 for shipping.  Totally cool, hunh!?!  Thanks so much for letting me share.

    Hi Becca~
How absolutely awesome! My only problem is that I had received the same email several times and didn’t take advantage of it!! I, like you, that there was some type of “catch”, so I didn’t take advantage of it! I certainly will the next time! You did an awesome job of putting it together and forever will have a memorial to your first two years blogging…I have enjoyed your work so much! You have inspired me continuously and I thank you for it!

wow Bekka – never mind you only had two hours to do it – this is totally awesome – goodness knows what you could have produced with more time…. You deserve to be published anyway – never mind going for this free and wonderful idea… i would never tire of reading and looking at your pics – thats why i have you on RSS feed and have done so since i discovered your wonderful blog and talent – probably 5 months+ ago – and i’ve only just been blogging for 6 months…

i visit every post you do – but don’t alway comment… you just take my breath away and sometimes i’m totally stuck for words… I only ocassionally join in the giveaways as I feel like a fraud commenting on those when I don’t comment on everything you do… you inspire me, and probably every single person who visits you – not only with your craft and talent – but with your kind heart and your faith which shines through in everything you do.

    Thank you

I received the offer as well, & felt that I probably wouldn’t make use od it. I showed it to my “non-scrapbooking” daughter,(I have 3 “scrappers”) as she had previously made one as a gift, & I thought she might use it. I was very happy when she gave me the book that she & her sister’s had colaberated on-a year in review. These are definately a treasure, & I’m sure that the results will encourage more orders in the future.

    Becca,

    Your book is beautiful!

I received the same offer and did my book a few months ago. I used pictures of my new craft house while it was under construction and to completion. I could have added a lot more pictures but just did a big picture on each page.
What’s funny… I made a picture from where I sit at my desk looking out over the room. My television is mounted on the far wall and I didn’t pay a bit of attention to what was on television at the time. geeze…. to say the least it was a sitcom I guess with a guy dropping his pants. He had his white underwear screaming out at you and I didn’t even see it until I got my book. I will be covering it with a sticker or something. Then… in my caption below the picture I stated “what a view.” It has given me and anyone that noticed it a big laugh.
So… I guess it’d be good if I’d pay closer attention to what I photograph.

Thanks for letting me ramble! I love your blog!

    Becca:
Yes Shutterfly is awesome. I have created several books – “for free” the last one I did was of my Son’s Wedding. These books are such keepsakes. I learned about Shutterfly free from the Oprah show and everyone at work was buzzin’ about it, so I gave it a try and I’m hooked. However, I never thought to put my projects in a book. What a fantastic idea. (there you go again with those amazing ideas) I’ll have to take the pictures and display them in the “book” hopefully I can catch the free ones. I think it’s usually around the holidays, like valentines, mother’s day and father’s day (at least that’s when I’ve done mine. Thank you so much for sharing with us.ReplyCancel

Becca, I too have had those freebie offers and ALWAYS take them up on it! When it’s a book offer, I usually do one of my kids and cat. When it’s for free prints, I have them print copies of cards I want to CASE or are inspiration for me. THey just stay in their little envelope, ready for me to be inspired by. I think of it as a different way of buying a craft magazine, with all those pix in there for us to admire.

    Becca,
I think this is wonderful. From what I have seen on just a few pages, this is absolutely amazing and to think you did this in just a few hours.
Why am I not surprized. What I am surprized about is that someone didn’t actually come up with the idea of publishing your work for real. I know you have so many followers that would love to be able to buy a book with all your ideas and tutorials in it. My only fear, is a selfish one, and that is that you would no longer have time to do your blog which for me is something I love to check out first thing in the morning. It’s addictive like that first cup of coffee. Great job – maybe you would be willing to share a few more pics of this book every now and again. We love it.

Becca, next time someone asks you what you like to do, a more accurate response would be, “Well, I create inspirational works of art that bring joy, inspiration and encouragement to thousands of people every day.” Of course, you’re too humble for that answer, but it’s the truth. I love your work and would also buy a Becca art book in a hearbeat! Hmmm, so do you maybe see a business opportunity in all these posts? :-) You are a blessing to me. I look forward every day to seeing what you have done next.ReplyCancel

Good things come to good people. What a special blessing to have something so beautiful to share with your guests. You deserve it.

Oh WOW WOW, so what on earth would you be able to create if you had more time?!! This is just gloriously devine…I would be so proud to have my cards presented in a book like this, so I can imagine how very very excited and proud you are. I am hoping that I can order something similar here in Australia through Snapfish (sadly we don’t have Shutterfly here) :( I have only ever seen books with one or two photos to a page and no writing, so have never really bother to consider them. Thanks for showing us what is possible. Kind regards Denise – Melbourne, AustraliaReplyCancel

Thanks for sharing your beautiful book of your unsurpassable work!!!
Can’t even fathom that you put it together in just 2 hours.
I created books on shutterfly for 2 of our granddaughters and it took days!!! The 5 yr old is a beginning reader so I kept the script simple! She had decided to become a “pig” after we saw pig races at a entertainment farm! It was so precious!!!
Wish I had pictures of all of the little English Smocking dresses I’ve made over the years. What a perfect portfolio vehicle!ReplyCancel

Hi Becca! It’s definitely time to consider getting your inspirational book published! You’ve already got all the card samples to fill an entire book. Many of your creations also inspire us with God’s word. There isn’t a single book on the book store’s shelves as unique as the one you could create! You could advertise the link to your website in it. Your name is well-known already…stampers everywhere, upon discovering your book, will want to purchase a copy and they’ll treasure it. Why not let the publisher know that this book will be the first in a series?ReplyCancel

I did one of a trip to Disney on Shutterfly, and this week I just loaded pictures for prints and the waiting time was almost two hours. So, you are a fast thinker and your book is such a precious keepsake. You would even have more than your money’s worth if you paid for it. I love your idea and results.ReplyCancel

  • sheenaJuly 9, 2010 - 7:57 pm

What a wonderful idea – a book of your very own. I did the same thing for my dearly beloved and his dad – but my subject was the contents of dearly beloved’s GREAT-grandfather’s tool chest. Beautiful hand-tools for wood-working which have now been passed down through four generations and have found their way into my dearly beloved’s workshop.ReplyCancel
