Follow Your Heart

Today I’m sharing a card made with Spellbinders Contemporary Hearts Pendant.  I wanted to change it up a little bit so I decided to offset two of the same shapes with cut out centers.  It leaves a great area in the center that I can place a center, flower or even a sentiment.   On the center of this card I used Spellbinders Classic Scalloped Circles Large and Spellbinders Standard Circles Large followed by the Pendant Center.

Card Recipe:
Stamps:  Hero Arts
Paper:  Bazzill, DP from my stash, Gold Foil Paper
Ink:  Versamark and Gold Embossing Powder
Accessories:  Spellbinders Contemporary Hearts Pendant, Spellbinders Classic Scalloped Circles Large, Spellbinders Standard Circles Large, Ribbon

Well, I because my card is as simple as it gets for me this is probably my shortest post yet!  No worries, I have a sweet story that my girlfriend Kay (Hi Kay!!) sent to me that touches me every time I read it.  I’ve sent it out to son and daughter , they know what matters but love the little nudges I send.

I grew up with practical parents who had been frightened by the Great Depression.  A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it.  She was the original recycle queen, before they had a name for it.  A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones.

Their marriage was good, their dreams focused.  Their best friends lived barely a wave away. It was the time for fixing things; a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress.  Things we keep.

It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy.  All that repairing, eating, reusing, I wanted just once to be wasteful.  Waste meant affluence.  Throwing things away meant you knew there’d always be more.

But then my mother died, and on that clear summer ‘s night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn’t any more.  Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away . . . never to return.  So, while we have it . . . it’s best we love it . . .and care for it . . . and fix it when it’s broken . . . and heal it when it’s sick.

This is true . . . for marriage. . . and old cars . . . and children with bad report cards. . . and dogs and cats with bad hips . . . and aging parents . . . and grandparents . . and friends.   We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it.  Some things we keep.

There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special.  And so, keep them close!

Thanks so much for stopping by!!  I hope you are making plans for a wonderful weekend filled with family and those who are close!

beautifully told. it brought back a flood of memories!
recently my daughter was lamenting over a heel falling off her favorite shoe and i suggested taking it to the “cobbler” (as we fondly referred to the shoe repair man, and i was given a look like i was in full fledge dimensia.)
God Bless your parents for teaching you such wonderful lifestyles, and God Bless you for treasuring them.ReplyCancel

Becca – a most beautiful card…elegant and simple…and being from the land of 40 shades of green it appeals even more…and then some gold to remind us that you have a heart of gold…..and the story….just brought back so many memories for me too….I can still see my father standing at his bench putting a new leather sole on a shoe…in those days you could buy leather….each little tack carefully positioned to attach the leather on…fixing bicycles he’d requisitioned from the dump….and then me proudly riding it as if it was the latest model. My mother making clothes, fixing clothes, knitting, ripping out old hand knit garments and washing the skeins and re-knitting a new garment from old..ripping up old flour bags and making sheets out of them…they were coarse but we were tough…..I could go on and on.ReplyCancel

Wonderful card and a beautiful story from your friend Kay, bless her.
I, coming up 62, know this feeling well, and I lost my mum 2 years ago at the age of 95. So in the 40’s & 50’s was a home of ‘making do and mend’ and real home cooking. Something I yearn for now.
The younger generation somehow just don’t ‘get’ it.
Bless you too for sharing this with us.

Becca – a beautiful card and the story your friend sent is so true. I also had parents that saved, repaired and reused things and like another replyer, it brought back many memories. One day at work we were talking about darning socks. That definitely is a skill of the past! I have heard that knitted socks are coming back into vogue.ReplyCancel

    Becca:

Your website is one that I go to every single day for inspiration. Not only are your creations stunning, but I always get a lift from your prose.

That story is so much like my grandparents lives. They are both gone now but amazingly, I am turning to the thought process that I scorned when I was younger.

I hope you don’t mind but I may put some of this on my blog. I will certainly point to your website as one of my favorites.

Someday I hope that I will develop into as incredible a designer as you are.

All of your Spellbinder cards are just stunning. I love each and every one of them. The story today touched my heart–so many truths. And I can still picture my mom saving her alum foil. She still talks of the depression–it was such a horrible time for her family. Have an awesome 4th! God Bless America and you.ReplyCancel

Just a beautiful card…..the story really came close to home with me….I can remember my farmer Grandmother coming to visit and bringing homemade soap to us. Giftwrap and ribbon were carefully folded and pressed. Anything that could be fixed was fixed….but not by my Dad who was a wonderful man but a mechnical disaster. We always said that if Daddy fixed it we would surely be buying a new one. Thanks Becca for all that you give us and have a wonderful holiday!ReplyCancel

What beautiful card, so very elegant! And thank you for posting Kay’s story. Having lost my mother and father I can truly relate to it. Stay close to those you love, even if it is a 5 minute call to just say hello. Let them know that they are loved.
