Day of Giving Friday: To Create is to Touch the Spirit

Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Roman Romance M-Bossabilities, Spellbinders A2 Curved Borders Two - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Good morning Friends!  I’m happy to say that I’m all caught up on my shipping.  If you have been waiting on a card from me, it’s on the way!!!  There are a few internationals that may take a bit longer but they are on the move.  Also, I’m all caught up on emails – I had quite a backlog.   The weeks are whizzing by and I know you all will so appreciate me saying only 69 more sleeps until Christmas.  In the meantime we’re back to Day of Giving Friday and I’m tickled to share what was one of my very favorite cards to make. If you are new to my blog – you can find info about Day of Giving on my FAQ List at #11.

I love tone on tone and all cream or all white are simplicity at it’s most elegant best!  To create is to touch the spirit – I’ve found that again and again and from the sweet emails where you share what crafting means – I would venture to say many of you feel the same way.   No everyone is a crafter but we know how how peaceful and empowering it is to create.

For your comment today, if a non-crafter in your world would agree to sit down and create with you – who would you want to share your gift with.   I have to share this time, so you’ll see I put my thoughts in the first comment.

Although she is already gone, it would have to be my sweet Grandmother, if only to tell her that I’m following in her steps and hope she would be proud. Watching her made me want to quilt, knit, crochet and more. I just want to tell her it worked, I got it! I would love to share back with her. Your turn ladies!ReplyCancel

    hI bECCA,
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVS OF YOUR DESIGN. I EVEN RECREATED IT FOR A SPECIAL FRIEND. LOVE THE TONE ON TONE!!
I GUESS I WOULD HAVE TO SAY MY STEPMOTHER. SHE LOST HER SIGHT IN HER LATE 60’S BUT ALWAYS USE THE TOUCH METHOD TO SHOW HER WHAT SOMETHING WAS MADE LIKE. I KNOW SHE WOULD BE PROUD THAT I WAS MAKING MY OWN CARDS THESE DAYS.
LOVE THESE FALL DAYS HERE IN FLA.

    Hi Becca
I’m a big fan of tone on tone and today’s card is stunning and I love the sentiment.
My chosen non-crafter would be my dear Father who died many years ago at an early age but he always took a big interest in every thing I did (as most fathers do) but I would love to have sat with him and shown him my cards and made one with him. I wasn’t into crafting when he was alive and I think he would have been delighted with what I do now.
Dear Becca thank you so much for the lovely email you sent me re:my dear hubby, it comforted me so very much.
    God bless

    Hugs Sheila xxReplyCancel

Good morning Becca! Wow, this card is gorgeous…I love the tone on tone!
My dearest friend had moved away 20 years ago and had finally moved back here last year. She had led such a harried, stressful life and we looked forward to doing many things together. She loved my cards and I was determined to teach her how relaxing it is to craft. Unfortunately, she became ill and we lost lost her suddenly just a few short months after her return. I really miss her.ReplyCancel

Gorgeous card today Becca. Just love all white cards. Would love to share paper crafting with my Mom. She is so talented and know she would be great. However, she thinks she is too old (89) to get involved. I keep working on her though. Thanks so sharing this beauty and have a wonderful weekend.ReplyCancel

    On Becca,
Tone on tone- you have touched heart strings and caused us to reflect upon those who have written upon our heart. I would choose to spend time with my “other mom” and my friend Charlene, both who are in heaven. Both loved my creative work and shared my creative passions.
Thank you for the good memories.

Hi Becca. This happens to be one of my favourites too from all your magnificent cards. White on white are so sophisticated and the bow is sumptuous! I am not sure there is just one person I would like to craft with if I could – each one for different reasons. Some as in the case of your grandmother, where creative themselves but have now gone and others because I could encourage creativity myself. Thank you for sharing this card with us again.ReplyCancel

  • Sara AlfordOctober 16, 2015 - 7:23 am

Hello Becca. Thank you for encouraging me to post my thoughts. I’m a virgin at this, since I prefer to quietly create at my craft table in my basement with soft music playing. My Mother, is the one I would like to create with at my craft table. I’m sure, somewhere in my DNA, I have her creativity, but we never shared this experience. She is now 103 and able. Thank you for allowing our eyes to examine your beautiful architectural creations. They go straight from my brain to my heart. God Bless!ReplyCancel

Stunning card. Love the beauty of the white on white, cuts and embossing. I thought to myself, I should follow your example, get caught up and get a stash of cards made and start sending one out on friday. The hard freeze is supposed to happen tonight, so my jam making will be done. Time to create before Christmas is here and time is again full with activities.ReplyCancel

  • Sandi SmithOctober 16, 2015 - 7:36 am

Oh my! I absolutely adore this stunning card! The tone on tone coloring combined with texture from the fabulous embossing folder and die cut layers and you have a card that says “elegance!” I believe this card is among my favorite and can see why you enjoyed creating it. It’s beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!

I would love to share crafting with my sister, Sharon. We have been very close our entire lives even though we’ve lived in different states for nearly 30 years. We are a year and a day apart in age so I think that would naturally draw us close but it has been our love combined with a shared faith that has caused our relationship to grow closer as the years have passed. My sister is creative and artistic but she isn’t a crafter. More than 40 years ago, we took a class together to make a wall decor project using quilting techniques. I know we both enjoyed the class because it was time spent together but Sharon didn’t enjoy the project like I did. I would love to spend uninterrupted time with her just exploring different crafts to find something that sparks her creativity. She has been married to her high school sweetheart for 44 years (he has been my best guy friend since junior high school). Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers 7 years ago. These last 7 years have taken their toll on both my rapidly declining brother-in-law and on my sister. My heart breaks as they bravely face many challenges each day and do so with a grace that can only come from God. It would be such a blessing to be able to sit with Sharon and take her away from life’s worries by sharing my love of crafting with her, even if the time was limited. I’ve learned a lot about how precious time is so any time would be quality time together.

God bless you Becca. You bring such inspiration to so many. I can only say “thank you” even though those words hardly begin to express my thankfulness. Thank you Becca!ReplyCancel

  • Kathy mOctober 16, 2015 - 7:40 am

First, I believe that everyone has some type of creativity. I think that I would ask my brother . He adores his wife and 3 girls. This would be his inspiration to creat one or more cards for them. I can see his smile, hear his voice and laughter.ReplyCancel

  • KayeOctober 16, 2015 - 7:46 am

    As always STUNNING!
The non crafter I would like to create with would be my Friend Kelley. She is always so appreciative of receiving my work & she brags about my creativity all the time. I would love to show her how, with the right tools, easy & fun crafting can be!ReplyCancel

Oh my gosh Becca, this is sooooooo sooooo beautiful. I totally agree with the white on white, it´s so beautiful and sooo elegant, and just makes my heart jump here to see this beauty here.
I´m in such luck, that I havea 7 granddaughters, and they´ve all just loved to stay here and craft with me. More of the oldest ones has left it again, as they discovered boys, but I have a very biiig hope, that I´ve managed to create the joy for crafting in them and they´ll come back to it some day, as they get more settled, but all the smaller girls and also the 2 boys are still very often guests here in my craftroom, and I absolutely love it.ReplyCancel

I so love this beautiful card! In answer toyour question it would have to be my wonderful mum who set me on the route of embroidery, sewing, knitting and crochet. The year before she died she was staying with us around September time and when I was crafting she asked if she could make a card. She went on to make about 20 Christmas cards, very simple, but she was so pleased – and I was so proud of her!!! I actually took a picture of her sitting behind the table with all her cards in front of her and she had a beaming smile!!!! A lovely memory! Hugs Christine xxReplyCancel

Stunning card with a beautiful bow. I’d love to teach anyone that WANTS to sit and learn. I’ve had my son and daughter and 1 brother sit down and watch from start to finish. These were Copic colored cards and they loved seeing the process and were stunned at the amount of time it took. So, it makes it that much sweeter for them when they receive a card.ReplyCancel

Becca, I have to tell you how much I love looking at your lovely creations! I love to go window shopping. I don’t have to buy anything, just looking at pretty things lifts my spirits. Now I don’t even have to go out of my house as I can just peruse your blog and find oodles of lovelies that just make me sigh with pleasure! Thanks!!
If I could sit down and share my crafting with someone it would be my mother and my aunt. Crafting calms me and I believe it would them, too, if they’d make time for it.ReplyCancel

  • christiOctober 16, 2015 - 8:00 am

my mom, because paper crafting can be as easy or hard as you want to make it. she use to get so flustered by things that needed to be put together. as I got older we would hint about what we got each other for Christmas and I really had her going when I told her there were 24 pieces that she had to put together. I gave her many other clues but that one she kept on asking about and she begged me to do it for her. of course I declined. which frustrated her even more. I kept saying that I KNEW she could handle it. as it turned out imagine her surprise when it was a dozen pots with saucers. boy did I have her going. so it would be fun with all the tricks out now to make a card with her.ReplyCancel

What a beautiful tone on tone card. I love the wonderful bow. If I could sit and craft with someone, it would be my mom. She was so creative. She used to comment on the beautiful cards I always bought her (I would spend hours in card shops). I think she would be even prouder of the cards I’m creating now. I wish she were here so I could make cards for her.ReplyCancel

I would say my mom. She desperately needs a hobby other than going garage saleing all the time. When younger, she was very creative with sewing and ceramics. Now at almost 79, she shops whenever she can (rarely buys anything though), and reads and watches the news and weather. I would love more creative conversation with her.
Love this card! All white is so classy–especially from you! Have a great Florida weekend!ReplyCancel

I would love to share paper crafting with my 83 year old friend who thinks she has no crafting talent. It would be so much fun to let her be surprised when she is able to create a beautiful card. I have been a fan of yours for years and thought I would never be able to create a card that was even close to being as beautiful as your cards. Absolutely stunning card Becca. I love white on white cards and I particularly like the edging dies, which I have not used nearly enough!
My mam would be the person I would most love to have sat down with to create. Sadly dementia struck her before I was fully into card making and so she never saw my better creations. I continued to make her cards of course, even though the last few years of her life she didn’t open her eyes and was unable to speak. I still loved making her beautiful cards though.ReplyCancel

stunning card, I too love the classic look of tone on tone especially White or Cream. i wish I still had my Mother around to see what I create now and even though she may not have joined in she could see the joy it gave me, she died before she could see any interest I had in any craft, she was a knitter and i still treasure some of the garments she made for my children when they were born.

My non-crafter would have to be my grandmother. She was not a papercrafter, but she was a quilter, and loved to make things with her hands. She LOVED to receive cards. She’s the reason that I make cards now…to bring others the joy and comfort that she gained from receiving them when she was sick. She showed me how to cook, sew, and stop to smell the roses. I know she would be proud that I make things with my hands, even if it’s not a quilt. And, she would have the patience to learn to make cards with me. She is no longer with us, but she’s always with me in spirit!ReplyCancel

They all enjoyed creating. Especially my Dad & Brother. Dad made my doll house & kitchen cabinets, among other things, for me when I was a child. (I’m 92 now) In his later years he made Civil War cannons to scale that would actually shoot. My Mother could draw & wright beautifully. My Brother made things of wood, & painted with pastels. This is so lovely! Lovin’ that triple bow!

I have in fact shared my love of crafting with many non-crafter’s in my life…..My mother-Got her started making jewelry, my sweet sister-in-laws Ruthi and Maureen and niece Tiffy–We made Glittered Potpourri Wreaths on paper plates. Been trying to teach my Sis-in-law Maureen how to read a pattern but she does not have the patience for it so I told her to go to Youtube and look for videos that show her how to crochet certain stitches instead as she is more of a visual learner.

But if I could teach one more person it would have been my best Church friend who died from Breast Cancer Gayle Barry. I miss her dearly. Infact I have not been to church in a very long time (3 years) due to it being so hard to not have her greet me and pray with me for my husband and me.

You are such an inspiration to me Becca. I love your strength in your weakness, your vulnerability which is rare in this world these days. Thank you for being such a Blessing to us all (((hugz)))ReplyCancel

    Becca,
what a lovely card. Love the tone on tone and the dies that u used. It is truly beautiful. It is hard for me to pick one person, but if my grandmother were still living it would be her, she meant the world to me, and practically was my second mother. I did not start crafting cards until she had passed. So she did not receive one of my handmade cards. The other person would be my sister, who I live with now but has no interest in paper crafts YET!! I still have time to change her interest! Thanks for sharing and I would love to win this card.

    Happy Friday, Becca,
Wow, this card is hardly simplicity but is most certainly “at its most elegant best”! The design of the card echoes the spiritual connection expressed by the sentiment. Heavenly!

My mom is gone now, but she always told people she didn’t have talent. So not true! Can you imagine how much creativity she had to have to meet the needs of seven children? She had the most beautiful handwriting in the world and a poetic soul, I’m sure my love for the written word came directly from her. I would love to show her that creating something beautiful has less to do with the artist in your head and more about the love in your heart.

Love & Blessings to you, our dear sweet Becca,

Beautiful card. I have a friend, Kate, of 40+ years. How we stayed best friends over the years is a miracle because we share nothing in common. I would love for her to learn to love crafting but it’s not going to happen, so I’ll accept her as the best friend I’ve ever had just the way she is!ReplyCancel

Hmm – I would love to craft with my self confessed un-crafty daughter – she is a wonderful person, and I am sure the craft genes have hot passed her by – they are simply currently dormant!

Gorgeous! That is all I can say!! I love to create, it is a way of sharing in soooooo many things. I would love to have had time to sit down with my grandmother who was a costume designer for MGM back in the 30’s and 40’s. That is where my mother must have got her sewing skills. She made clothes for all 5 of us kids. The only down side was having the same dress for 6 years! Bless their hearts. Becca. you are such a special person and you make it easy to share with others. Blessings, LisaReplyCancel

Becca – your card is simply stunning. I love the curved borders and the embossing folder and that bow is fabulous!
I would have loved to have sat down with my mother as I know she would have taken to crafting as a duck to water. I have a room which we had intended to share with sewing and knitting machines, but sadly she died before that dream came to pass.

Hi Becca – What a gorgeous card. Would love to own it. I think it would be my friend Nena that I would share with. She is such a lovely person and talented in so many other ways I’m sure she would love to learn to make cards if time permitted with her. She is a teacher and also helps to take care of her dad so time is pretty sparse with her.ReplyCancel

I would be ever so thrilled to share my love of scrapbooking with a friend who takes marvelous photos of her beautiful daughters and leaves them in jpeg format. I so treasure the quiet time spent scrapbooking, listening to encouraging music, and giving thanks as I look back at the past through the lens of the camera. A most elegant card today and one of my favorites of yours. I now have this embossing folder so I can try my hand at a similar design. I would really like to sit down and share my paper crafting with my sister who is super talented in many arts. She appreciates the cards I have sent her. She taught me to sew my clothes that I wore to school when I was in the sixth grade. She even knitted me a sweater just before I was born. I still have this sweater and treasure it. My sister was just five years old when I was born. Can you believe this? She is one special sister and I am blessed. I wish she lived closer to me in miles.ReplyCancel

Your card is so stunning. I love the tone on tone and the three layer bow. Beautiful. I had a friend come for a visit and to work on our miniature room boxes. She mentioned her mother’s birthday would be soon who lived in Italy and would I teach her how to do a birthday card for her. It was so much fun and the proud look on her face when the card was done was priceless. Of course, her mother thought the card was so beautiful and could not believe her daughter made it.ReplyCancel

Gorgeous Card!!! So Elegant. I love to craft, but do not have any adult family members who craft. I wish my daughter enjoyed crafting, as we are close and enjoy so many other interests. But, she is a working Mom, raising twin 5 yr old daughters who consume her time as it should be. While she is at work, I fill in with the twins and have since they were born. Besides crafting, they are the love of Grandpa’s and Grandma’s life and they really love crafting and making things with me. I think they are both turning into great little crafters who seem to really enjoy paper crafting. It makes crafting even more enjoyable for me.

Beautiful card today, I love it, I want it. I would love to see it in person, I have the perfect spot for it. I have 2 people I would love to create cards with–one would be my dad who passed away in 2002 from Alzheimer’s. He loved to work with wood and made table lamps, tables, Christmas ornaments, etc. He also loved to paint by number. He passed away before I started “playing with paper”. Actually, he’s the reason I started. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer and my mother was having a hard time dealing with his illness. I went to the mall where there was a craft show. There was a lady with a heat gun, a maple leaf stamp and embossing powder. That’s all it took, I was hooked! That was in 1998. I can see him coloring with my copic markers.
The other person is my granddaughter who is expected to arrive the first of December. My daughter-in-law would take classes with me before my grandson was born, so I am looking forward to sharing my love of crafts with her from “playing with paper” to quilting and anything in between. My two sons and husband love to restore antique tractors/machinery and don’t enjoy my love of paper, yarn, and fabric.ReplyCancel

Your card today is so lovely and yes I LOVE the tone-on-tone! I would so love to be able to sit down with my sister who loved to do scrapbooking. Hi Becca, This card is a variation of your previous card that makes my top 5 list and not at the bottom of that short list. Just beautiful–this one is shorter but just as dramatic. Such a beauty. Thanks. For the life of me I can’t think of a non-crafter I would want to craft with–maybe sit and drink coffee together. I want you across from me so I can watch you work–that’s much better than a novice. BarbaraReplyCancel

I would love to craft with my daughter-in-law. Right now she is raising our twin granddaughters (2 yr olds), so time/energy is at a premium. I’d love to pass crafting to the twins by passing it to their mom first. It is such a tension reliever and a feeling of accomplishment. Her job of parenting is a long one that often feels like it is never going to end.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, This card is stunning, the curved die-cut shaping is fabulous and the triple bow is truly beautiful. I love it !!
If it was possible I would love for my Mum to sit down and craft with me, she taught me on her old treddle Singer sewing machine how to make clothes, and how to knit and how to embroider, and I thank her to this day for her teaching me how to do these beautiful things. Sadly she had passed away when I was introduced to papercrafting and started to make my own cards, she would have loved to see all the fabulous creations and would be absolutely amazed at what we can all achieve nowadays. I wish she could sit with me !! God Bless her.

    Becca,

My goodness this is just gorgeous! And I know someone who would be absolutely thrilled to receive this in the mail. She has really had a tough time the past year and recently came down with a very serious case of Shingles. So much so, that she has complete stopped stamping and uploading cards to her SCS gallery. She loves to create monochromatic cards and she is so missed.

Now, to answer your question. It would be my mother who passed away many years ago. She was a creative soul who was way beyond her years. Let me step back in time. My step-father always picked the Christmas tree (a live one). And it had to be one that was flocked with that white stuff (she laughs). One year my mother decided she was going to change things up (I loved her spunk). Enter my sisters and I – screen door slamming behind us as we stopped in our tracks bumping into one another. There was our mother standing beside a Charlie Brown Christmas tree with branches very wide apart (you couldn’t put lights on it). She had bundled three beautiful Christmas bulbs and hand-tied them with gorgeous red bows and placed them strategically on the end of each sparse branch (she stood there so proud with a look like — well?). WE WERE SPEECHLESS! My step-father was Horrified! *hahahaha* It’s a memory I love to this day! She was my hero! A creative spirit that was free to be.

    Hugs,
    Susie ~

    Good afternoon Becca,
I loved this card the very first time you showed it and after looking at it many times since it still gives me that same feeling, the sense of just how peaceful and calming it looks and just how beautiful you can something from a simple start. I started my friend of into the world of creating and crafting just recently with the gift that i couldn’t be without now….my grand calibur. I promised her my old one when i got a new machine only mines was broken when i went to give it and couldn’t. Not wanting to break a promise i got the chance of a new one without plates or handle for a small sum of money. She got it on Wednesday and the joy in her eyes as she seen what i had brought for her was a fantastic gift to me. I have already got her some of my doubles that i have in dies and have been buying her inspirational packs that have freebies in it to encourage her. She called me up on Saturday to ask about embossing but i wish you could have her the happiness in her voice, that is what makes it so joyful for me having brought some happiness to someone that couldn’t have got it for herself. She started as a non crafter that i met at my work and because i need a bit of help she agreed to come with me to a craft show in Glasgow. That first show was 5years ago and last year i got her to sit in a make and take workshop with me which she really enjoyed but it was in March when i introduced her to die cutting at the show that she beamed with pride at making a beautiful card all by herself hence the reason for me giving her a GC all of her own. She has such a sweet heart that lifts me up when i am down, she listens when i just need someone to speak to and she is there in an instance when i just can’t get up so she is who i would share a gift with without hesitation. Thank you Becca for the beauty that your lovely heart brings to us and lifts us up when we need it most.
    Love and crafty hugs

Dear Becca, I love the white on white card. It is so elegant. I love to create with my grandchildren. They are very young and I hope to establish in them the love of crafting and what fun things they can make. Usually within 5 minutes of coming in the house they are tugging at my shirt and asking to go to the crafting room. Saving scraps for their special basket helps their creative spirit soar.
