Day of Giving Friday – I Miss You

Miss You Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Twisted Metal Tags - www.amazingpapergrace.com
I’m tickled to seque into the first Day of Giving Friday with another card.  You all definitely inspired me to keep this going on a weekly basis and resource-wise, it’s very manageable for me.   I have lots of cards to giveaway and think it’s befitting for the folks who peek in quite often to have a shot at those cards.  The loveliest thing happened during July was that I felt like I went away to a retreat and met you all.  I could track comments from day to day and see your personalities.   I have something else I’m cooking up but have been asking my friends to help me get my mind around the administering to make sure it’s something I can handle.  Stay tuned – it’s something that goes hand in hand with saving the handwritten word one day at a time.  In the meantime, today I’m showing you a a shabby card I made that will go out to one lucky winner.  Just leave a comment on this post and I’ll pick a winner tomorrow.  If you are new to my blog, you can read about Day of Giving Friday on my FAQ List at #11.

I love this card. I found some old lace like that at a small second hand shop in Mpls when I was over in that older neighborhood showing houses. Have not had an opportunity to get back thar way… not that I need more lace or ribbon. :) did make a box with some cards with arched elegance. :)ReplyCancel

    HI BECCA,
Wow, this is certainly a little different that what we have seen from you before. Like the shabby design. Very pretty paper and the lace is beautiful.
The biggest lesson I have learned about crafting is to stop what you are doing if an idea comes into your head and “do it now!” which I guess comes from not procrastanating on almost everything I do. You don’t want to lose an idea that “pops” into your head.
Thanks again for sharing your lovely cards and anyone I would be lucky enough to win would be delightful.
    Hugs

that I can do it! Maybe not the same as someone else, but my way and it can turn out just as nice. Plus there are alot of wonderful talented folks out there who are willing to share their talent with the rest of us.ReplyCancel

  • Margaret CrawfordAugust 7, 2015 - 7:21 am

I love this card, Becca. As always.
Biggest lesson…..go with flow….doesn’t feel right…..don’t do it. Sometimes just have to put a project away, until a light bulb moment happens. In fact have a few on hold, just waiting for the big light up! Take care and God Bless.ReplyCancel

  • DebraAugust 7, 2015 - 7:21 am

Beautiful card Becca! The biggest lesson I’ve learned from crafting is to trust my instincts. I always have trouble starting a card – deciding on cardstock color, choosing the design, ink, and stamps. Once I become less worried and more relaxed and start listening to my instincts, it all flows. This craft has also taught me to be patient and let the creative process happen.ReplyCancel

  • Pam TasAugust 7, 2015 - 7:22 am

Good morning Becca what a gorgeous card love it !!!
The colours have the WOW factor I just can not believe how you
    keep coming up with them.
My biggest lesson is to use all my papers and embellishments and not
to keep saving them as they keep making new ones.
There will always be gorgeous papers and embellishments.
Have a happy weekend you are a treasure XXXReplyCancel

Ohhh, love the touches of blue and the flowers and lace! So pretty! I’m pretty new to cardmaking…but hmmm what I’ve learned about it, is it’s way to fun and addicting! LOL I’m sure I’ll learn more as I go…but thats the biggest thing so far. I didn’t think I’d make many when I started…just some here and there as I needed them…but thats not how it’s going, I’ve got a small box of extras…and hopefully eventually I’ll be able to find a good place to give some away, once I get enough to warrant doing so. :-))ReplyCancel

I really like this card and will have a go of my own version when it gets a little cooler here in Spain. One lesson I have learned and that I repeat often to my crafting girl is …….there are no mistakes when we are crafting…just odd occasions when things don’t go quite how we had imagined . XxxReplyCancel

  • Wanda ThomasAugust 7, 2015 - 7:27 am

Lesson learned: Learn from your mistakes. Some of my greatest creations have resulted from trying to fix a mistake. And PS, I love the shabby chic look!ReplyCancel

One thing I have learned about crafting is not to be so hard on my work. I compare my cards to your cards or some other very talented designers.

My friends think I do such a good job, as they are not crafters.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful work.

Hi Becca, this card is magnificent. I have OCD and so everything has to be perfect, a certain way or my world seems chaotic. When I first started crafting I can’t tell you how many times when the project was finished I tore it up or threw it out because in my head it wasn’t perfect. I’ve slowly learned I can’t control how the materials will react or how how a color may dry. It’s meant to be relaxing and that most people will not notice the imperfection.Their just happy you took the time to make them something beautiful from the heart.ReplyCancel

  • LoisAugust 7, 2015 - 7:34 am

Beautiful and very interesting card. I don’t think I know how to create that special look. What have I learned? Don’t buy more than you really need. A sale savings isn’t a savings if you don’t use the item(s). And just enjoy the art and craft of making cards. Have fun with your new idea and thanks for doing Day of Giving Friday.ReplyCancel

  • Chris SmartAugust 7, 2015 - 7:36 am

  • BunnyAugust 7, 2015 - 7:37 am

Crafting, like anything else, takes time and practice. LOTS of practice. Some things are easy. Some will take years. Like, coloring. Also, it is an expense that you have to budget for. You can’t have everything that you want. Stick with the supplies you need. Acquire slowly to make sure that you are actually going to use them.ReplyCancel

  • Judy InukaiAugust 7, 2015 - 7:46 am

Beautiful card. I love the scrumptious bow and lace. My biggest lesson is measure twice or even three times and cut once. I can’t tell you how many pieces of cardstock or patterned paper I’ve misjudged the measurement for. I always manage to use it eventually for something else, but it’s disappointing to have a special piece of pattern paper for a special design that gets cut wrong because I’ve mismeasured.ReplyCancel

  • Lela PlattAugust 7, 2015 - 7:47 am

The biggest thing I have learned, as far as paper crafting, is that you will never have too many supplies, but that if you are making something you can always get by with what you already have.ReplyCancel

  • Judy BennettAugust 7, 2015 - 7:47 am

Fabulous card Becca! So different from you usual cards, but so very beautiful… I love it!

Biggest lesson I learned from crafting is the great joy and satisfaction I get when I give one of my cards and it is so very much appreciated. I have such a feeling of accomplishment knowing I’ve made someone happy.ReplyCancel

  • Melissa BoveAugust 7, 2015 - 7:50 am

Wow! One is better than the next!! Absolutely stunning Becca!

  • JudyAugust 7, 2015 - 7:51 am

I guess the biggest lesson I have learned is that I have my own style. Looking back I see the same dominate colors and simplicity. #2 crafting is expensive!!ReplyCancel

  • Christine Harrop, Oxfordshire, UKAugust 7, 2015 - 7:53 am

What a lovely shabby chic card Becca. I do love them but struggle with them. I get distressed when I’m distressing … lol! The first time I took a distressing tool to my card I could feel my mum looking over my shoulder and could hear her saying “Christine why on earth are you damaging that beautiful card?” Well if she was still here she would have done so . She was probably looking down from Heaven and thinking it!!!!!

The biggest thing I have learned is not to worry if something doesn’t turn out the way you thought it should. If you can’t fix it at that point, put it to one side and try again in a week or so . It’s amazing how a little distance can change things and sharpen your mind.

    Hugs Christine xxReplyCancel

  • Linda MilroyAugust 7, 2015 - 7:59 am

    What is the biggest lesson I learned in crafting;
To be yourself, don’t try to make your projects perfect. Don’t try to be like someone else. You are unique with your own style. Do what comes from the heart and soul and eventually you will find your perfect style.
This card is beautiful, so graceful and lovely.
Thanks for the chance to win one of your wonderful inspiring cards.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
What a lovely card, you sure know how to put things together and they come out beautiful.

I am still trying to learn that “It’s just paper.” If something goes wrong or simply doesn’t turn out the way I had envisioned, it is not the end of the world and probably not the end for that piece of paper. Sometimes better things come out of tweak number two…or three…

Thank you for another chance to win one of your gorgeous creations!ReplyCancel

  • Karen WeddingAugust 7, 2015 - 8:10 am

Great card, Becca! Love the colors and the insert card. I guess the biggest lesson I learned in crafting is to clean up after each project. If you don’t, it doesn’t take long before your craft area is just a small area to work in.ReplyCancel

  • Ruth SartainAugust 7, 2015 - 8:12 am

The lesson I have learned is that if a card isn’t going together the way I had invisioned, walk away, give it a rest, and come back to it later. Usually it all comes together then.ReplyCancel

  • Christine MillerAugust 7, 2015 - 8:13 am

    What incredible lace!

The biggest crafting lesson I have learned is to be myself and have fun. That broad statement includes living within my crafting budget and being content with my supplies and tools. It encompasses celebrating growth of my own skills while admiring the work of others. When my scrapbooking goal is to document God’s goodness to my family, I am always pleased with the book. It is realizing that card making is all about giving and blessing the recipient. All that and it is so much fun!ReplyCancel

  • Kathy BAugust 7, 2015 - 8:14 am

I enjoy your cards so much! This one helps me think outside my usual zone, which is good. When I craft I have learned to be flexible. My card usually ends up differently than I had planned, but that’s ok. Sometimes the day changes up my style for the day. Mostly when I craft I enjoy thinking about the person who I am making the card for – and praying for them while I am crafting.ReplyCancel

  • DeborahAugust 7, 2015 - 8:14 am

What a seriously darling shabby card! Loving the giveaways – so generous of you. The biggest lesson I’ve learned about crafting is that it does more for me than it does the receiver and that’s OK. There’s something deeply satisfying about the creative process.ReplyCancel

  • Faulba DorsettAugust 7, 2015 - 8:18 am

I love, love, love this card. It is absolutely gorgeous. I wish I had the time to make a card like this. But I digress. The best thing I have found about crafting is to slow down and enjoy making things instead of rushing through to get it done. This is supposed to be calming and enjoyable. It is not about how many things you get made, but the journey to get there.ReplyCancel

  • DixieAugust 7, 2015 - 8:20 am

Oh, another beautiful card. Love the combination of the graphic along with the die & the bow.

I have earned through crafting to not expect everything to turn out as I originally planned. Oftentimes the ending result is better than the plan. I also have learned to not expect to be prefect.ReplyCancel

Becca, your card is amazing today….so elegant! Love all your creations that you share with us. Thx so much for being a part of each of our lives!

Definitely…..the most important thing I’ve learned is that you will make mistakes, and that is okay. I try to learn something from each mistake, and try
not to let perfection rule my crafting. It’s hard some days because I’ve
always been a perfectionist in anything I’ve done, Most mistakes aren’t
even noticeable to anyone but you.

    Hugs
    PatReplyCancel

I think the biggest thing is to just keep trying. I can’t count the number of cards I have started and did not like. Either I throw it away right then or else set it aside and look at it later and try to correct or improve on it. I’m afraid I just don’t have your talent for combining dies and making them look good. Oh I just love this shabby chic look, Becca. You have it to perfection :o)
Golly, I’ve learned many crafting lessons! Maybe the biggest lesson, though, is that by showing others how to do something, the rewards are enormous! When you see the absolute delight on their faces when they see what they can achieve, it is a blessing above priceless gems.

    Hello Becca!
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is you need to slow down and enjoy the process and make that craft reflect you. Don’t struggle to make it exactly like the designer did. if you are struggling and getting frustrated then stop, and find a different craft to pursue. It’s supposed to be enjoyable.

The biggest lesson I have learned is patience I am the type of person that feels I have to be ahead of everyone even my self. Hello Becca! What a lovely card you’re created to begin the Day of Giving Friday. I love the shabby look, vintage lace and even the distressed edges. It’s definitely my style. Thank you for continuing to share your beautiful cards with us.

I’m learning that everything I create doesn’t have to be a masterpiece. Not that I actually create anything resembling a masterpiece but I used to spends hours and hours trying to make every scrapbook layout and card as perfect as possible. I still struggle with that, which is why I said I’m learning. lol! I’ve learned that I actually deprive myself of the joy of sharing more cards to more family and friends when I try to create the perfect card. This is doubly so with scrapbook layouts. I create fewer of these beautiful reminders of my memories of life when I limit myself to fewer layouts because each one must be as perfect. I definitely want everything I create to be my best effort but I’ve learned to move further away from frustrated perfectionism and as a result, I can enjoy paper crafting more.ReplyCancel

A very different look, but still beautiful. Love the idea of sending a physical card or message to someone you miss. The biggest thing I have learned from crafting is patience and that perfection is not the goal. I am one who will put off something just because I don’t think it will be perfect or not try a technique just because I don’t want to “waste” paper. Hey, it’s just a piece of paper and less than perfect can be beautiful too.ReplyCancel

When I need to lift my spirit or to calm myself or find inspiration, I come here and browse the years of wonderful art. have a wonder-filled day! MReplyCancel

Very different card than the usual cards you make, Becca and that’s good cuz we all like different artwork. I’ve learned when I work on something such as when I previously sewed for people if I’m not sure if I like something I’m doing I leave the room and come back to it later on to figure out what it is that I wasn’t sure of.ReplyCancel

Oh Becca, this card is {gush} gorgeous! Different from most of your other cards, but still in the same genre.
What have I learned about crafting? Lots! I miss it when I am away for too long. I am frustrated at times when it doesn’t meet my expectations. Lol. It can calm me. I can get lost in it. It can consume me. It has made me a hoarder. Hahahaha!
It makes me think. And it takes up a lot of room! Giggle, giggle. It is definitely a part of my life. (Oh, it also makes my kids crazy. They are thinking along the lines of when I am gone. Hah!)ReplyCancel

Beautiful card Becca! Love the shabby style. Well I’ve learned that I like every style of card; but not be afraid to gravitate to any particular one and expand on it. Failure seems to haunt the perfectionist so going through trials of types of paints and styles is fun but often scary. Whenever I do, others just loves my finished piece. I have also learned I have to get past the “preparation” stage and jump in. That also describes a Melancholic description! All is fun though, whatever the outcome. It is a pleasure to create and give. Thanks for giving to us Becca. We all appreciate it!ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, your card is lovely as always. I always admire your work and how you have endless ideas. The biggest lesson I have learned through crafting as well as being a Mom is that art does not have to be perfect. At one time everything had to be perfect. Now if it is a little off centered its okay.

Beautiful card Becca. I have some lace & didn’t know what to do with it. Your card gave me a idea.

The biggest lesson I learned is when I get an idea to write it out on paper but be sure I put all the details other wise it means nothing when I go back to it. Anther thing is not to do something I don’t like because I will not do a good job.ReplyCancel

Love the card! The biggest lesson I’ve learned recently is that crafting has its place, but is only temporal. Have just had two deaths in our church which reminded me of the temporal nature of all that we do here on earth and the importance of eternal things. I have to be careful of letting my crafting (and desires for more and more crafting goodies!) get in the way of things that really matter eternally.I want to be a better steward of my crafting stash & want to make my crafting serve relational and eternal purposes.ReplyCancel

Oh my gosh Becca, you just keep on doing it. I´m blown away with this beauty here, it is soo sooo beautiful.
The biggest lesson I´ve ever learned is, I think, that there´s no right or wrong in how we do things, if they´re just apealing to the eyes of the reciever. Earlier I was always sooo afraid nothing was good enough, but I´ve learned over the years, that it´s only me, who´s never satisfied with what I amde, and if people keeps asking me to make things for them, then it must be because they think, they´re okay, else they wouldn´t ask right?ReplyCancel

  • ChelseaAugust 7, 2015 - 1:19 pm

What a beautiful card today, Becca. It’s so feminine and peaceful, and I love that shade of blue. Yummy!
Today’s question is a hard one! I would guess my biggest lesson is to not run out and buy everything I see featured in the ads. I have wasted a lot of money buying something featured that has only one use, and then I never use it again! That’s why I applaud your blog posts – you always show us lots of ways to use our dies and paper in fresh and exciting ways.ReplyCancel

    Becca, Becca, Becca,
Your post today gave me goosebumps and your card left me speechless (from reading my comments, you probably know I’m seldom at a loss for words ;->)

I know God works through these things that I love to serve His purpose. I have experienced this through singing & card making. I have been “called” to make cards for people who are critically ill. At the time, I didn’t know the people very well or that they were very sick. When I asked, “Why me?” The answer was, “Because you are the card maker.” What can be better than this – to be called upon to serve God by doing what I love! Amazing grace, indeed.

    Love & blessings, my friend,
    SandyReplyCancel

You cannot force inspiration. It took me some time to realize this. Sometimes a card idea comes together easily from the get go. Other times it runs full speed away because I am trying to force a card together. So I am trying to teach myself to make sketches with notes when an inspiration visits me if I can’t act on it at the time.ReplyCancel

  • KrisAugust 7, 2015 - 2:15 pm

The biggest lesson about crafting?…..the first thing that comes to my mind is that it is meant to be shared. Have you ever come across a crafted item that was so breathtaking you knew you had to learn the technique so you could make it yourself? There have been occasions where this has occurred and the crafter was unwilling to share their knowledge. I know this can be a slippery slope as there are those who will take advantage of your creativity, but that is why I so appreciate places like this blog that share, share, share…with grace their gifts and talents to others. You are appreciated!ReplyCancel

  • AnnaAugust 7, 2015 - 3:08 pm

The biggest lesson I have learnt with crafting is that To Give is not just a tangible thing it is also a spiritual thing. When I make a card or scrap a page or make a quilt I think of the person that will or may receive the item. Channelling. This means that through the process of making the item I have this person not only in my head but heart too and then I am able to give to person something else beside the item as a wee piece of me goes with them.
Does any one else find this happens to them?
I suppose it is passing the love around.

      Hi, Anna,
Absolutely! I think of cards as “Love in an Envelope”. Sometimes I am “in-spired” to put the perfect thing in the card, too. It’s really this process of communicating love and care to people that has me totally hooked on making cards. Thank you for sharing this aspect!

What a lovely card, Becca. I’m not used to so dark.a look from you, and you do it well.

Biggest lesson…wow, so many…probably that perfection is over-rated. I remember when I was quilting, a friend of mine saying “It is only a mistake if a man on a galloping horse at fifty paces can see it.” Since none of my cards ever look alike, and I make a lot of my background papers, I’ve learned to shrug off the imperfections and ignore them when people point them out. Unless it is something which really detracts, in which case I will mark it down, I just ignore it all. Makes life a lot easier not being a perfectionist.

Thanks for keeping this going, Becca…good plan!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned about crafting is to never give up! So many times after laboring over a card, only to be not so happy with it and tossing it aside, I come back to revisit it later and find I’m quite pleased with it. Sometimes I don’t do anything else to it. Sometimes I just tweek it a little. What I first felt needed to go in the trash ends up being a treasure to someone! So never give up! • DKAugust 7, 2015 - 7:30 pm

Becca: I had to smile at your description of your “shabby” card. Most definitely this card propels shabby to an elegant level. What I have learned about crafting is….although a card or handcrafted gift may not turn out exactly as I envisioned, the recipients’ eyes have always been blinded by their unconditional appreciation of my sentiment and the fact I took the time to handcraft something for them. In turn, I have learned to “let go” of anticipated results.ReplyCancel

  • Carol H.August 7, 2015 - 8:00 pm

Oh my goodness! I find myself just staring at your card, scrolling down, and then I’ll go back up to look at it again. It is just stunning! I really think my style, or at least what appeals to me, is what you do. I love the clean and simple looks, but I have a struggle creating them and always want to add more and more and more! LOL! I totally love the blue shades, the distressed edges, the layers, and just everything about your card! What have I learned about crafting? Probably one of the most important things I’ve learned is to think hard about things I buy. When I look back at things I purchased early on, I really am scratching my head wondering why did I buy that? Ha ha! So I have learned to really think about what I buy and I try to buy things that are more versatile than a one-subject item. Also I have learned that I just need to go with what I like and not worry about the big trends that are going on. Thank you for your inspiration. Your talent really amazes me! Thank you for sharing it with us all!ReplyCancel

Hi Becca! What a beautiful card! I love the different colors, textures and butterflies! A little different colors than your usual!
What I have learned from crafting is that I have more creativity than I imagined. I have loved art from an early age and bring it into many of my stamping projects. I tend to like frills, glitter and glam in my projects. Lots of layers etc. Even when I take classes, I add additional a things of interest, alter techniques or change up colors, sometimes to the chagrin of the instructor, though I try very hard to not do it openly to take anything away from the instructor. When I sewed, I was famous for changing patterns and sometimes even along something without a pattern. It made for some interesting clothing! Since I grew up in the 50-60s, you can just imagine! Necklaces from cantaloupe seeds, block printing my own t-shirts, lace palazzo pants with skin colored lining meant to shock. Oh so many artsy things! It is funny though, whatever interests my OCD brain at the moment, I go head over heals into it. I still have some art supplies from college in the 60s!
Probably the most important thing I have learned is that I can just be me!ReplyCancel

  • Linda LoydAugust 7, 2015 - 8:37 pm

I think the biggest lesson in crafting is: just start. There are no wrong answers really, so there shouldn’t be this fear of failure, right? So just sit down and create what is in your heart and let go. We are who we are- just be, with a perfect loving God loving heart. The end result will shine through if for no one else but yourself…. Until tomorrow when you try again.ReplyCancel

    a) that I’m always learning!!
    b) whenever I make something that I think is rubbish, someone else always likes!!!

What a beautiful card. This has to be one of my favorites. WOW! Lessons learned…maybe the biggest for me has been keep at it and you can make something new from what you have. It reminds me daily to keep looking for another way to get something accomplished when at first it doesn’t seem to work out.ReplyCancel

    Dear Becca,
So, I missed the opportunity for the card, but not the opportunity to communicate! It’s so easy to become engrossed with the project for me that I forget about the giving! I’m working, with the LORD. to correct that. When I remember the person I’m intending to bless, WHILE I am creating a gift for them, it takes on a whole new and personal dimension. then I remember to pray for that individual. It stops being “all about me” and takes on a really special purpose. I am definitely a ‘work-in-progress’!
    So that’s my take…. have a great Saturday!ReplyCancel

Beautiful card. I have learned that sharing my talent with gifts and cards bring immense pleasure to both myself and the receiver. I’ve also learned that the mess up while creating most often turns into the most beautiful of projects.ReplyCancel

Looking at your website is a blessing for me. It has been one year ago that I lost my oldest son. I look at the beautiful cards that you make and I think to myself my son would really like that one. He would always tell me how beautiful my cards are and that I sould sell them. I love this card beause it has butterflies and my son knew that so he would always try to find things that had butterflies on them and send them to me. Thanks for sharing. Praying for you, Christine, my heart aches to know that you lost your oldest son a year ago. Praying that God will bring even more comfort to you today. We are blessed to know Him and to have Him as our Heavenly Father. Please know that I am so sorry and that I care.

HI Becca. What a gorgeous card. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that even if you think you’re not good enough at what you’re doing, someone else will be there to say ‘I love it’. Thanks for sharing your art with us. I love seeing what you’ve created.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, This card is a stunning creation, the vintage shabby chic and the beautiful lace make this a stunning creation.

The biggest lesson I learned is that you don’t have to have everything!! I have found that to much is over whelming where as something new every once in a while is more likely to get used. This card is so Victorian and truly lovely. TFS AnnReplyCancel

The lesson that I am TRYING to learn, is not to overthink everything! I spend WAY too much time figuring out papers, embellishments and placement. I usually always like the completed project, but I am so slow that I don’t get much finished! I have missed occasions because I obsessed to much that the items were not finished. It is even tougher for me now that my local store has closed and I am not in a store to wander around and draw inspiration while I am working on the project. I hope it will be better when I finally have a dedicated “space” and can unpack everything that I have stored in bags and containers! I have also learned that there are NO mistakes–only “creative opportunities”!

I have often found that Crafting meets some of my deepest Soul and Spirit needs that buying Store Bought just never does. You see, Crafting is Therapy for me in my Healing from multiple past traumas that have eaten up most of my 43 years on this earth.

In Crafting, I trade my “Ashes for Beauty” when I create something lovely and then I just give it away to someone else, their smile is my beauty that I do get to create in this fallen world we all live in until the Lord comes for us.ReplyCancel
