Day 7 – 30 Days of Giving

LGBF-3859-2013
Saving the Written Word

If you’re not familiar with 30 Days of Giving and how you can receive this card,  read about it HERE.  You can check to see if you’ve won a card by looking under the Features menu item and selecting Giveaway Winners.

Good morning friends, fellow cardmakers, papercrafters, lovers of the written word :-)  Thank you so much for peeking in with me every day.   I was tickled to hear that you have received some love in your mailbox lately!  That sets the stage for today’s question – I have a feeling I already know the answer as this is a particularly active community that is making on the regular . . .

For today’s comment – when is the last time you sent a handmade card, how about a handwritten letter?

The card that’s being given away today is shown above.  Just a note – this is a card that has been shown before and there is a possibility that some of the supplies that were used are currently discontinued, no doubt there will be something you can substitute – have a look through my galleries for alternative ideas.  Many things can still be found on the open market, just google and you’ll find that many retailers are still selling.

Yesterday, I am sending one to my nephew every day while he is at the Young Life Leader Camp in Colorado. He is there to help in the work crew again this summer, he leaves July 20, there for 1 month. He gets home sick, they can not use any devices or receive or make any phone calls while there, they can get mail only. He is a great young man who God has a special plan for, can not wait to see what it is!! All my love to you Becca you are doing a great thing giving away one of your Awesome cards every day, they are sure to bring sunshine to anyone who will receive them. Still hoping I will be one of the lucky winners, thanks for a shotReplyCancel

when I last sent a card was a week or two ago. I have awful handwriting so I don’t write letters often. probably 10 or more years ago. e-mails almost daily but not “snail” mail. today’s card is gorgeous, and it’s blue, my fav. color.ReplyCancel

  • Marlene IacuzziJuly 7, 2015 - 7:21 am

Does the one that is sitting near the door waiting to be mailed count?
I made it last night for a friend recovering from a stroke. Since it has a long note inside I think it counts as a letter, too. I must add it took me awhile, as I ended up with two other “almost” while making that one. They will get finished today-or tomorrow- or next week. Love your cards, and your bows, Becca.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
the last card I made was for my granddaughter Sarah whos birthday is on Thursday this week, July 9th. The last letter I wrote was to my grandson Daniel who is in the Air Force, not sure of the date of that but it was in June. He is now home. There is nothing like getting a handwritten card or letter in the mail.
Thanks so much for all your inspiration. This card is awesome.
THanks for the chance to win.ReplyCancel

Sadly, the most common time to actually send a card is during a time of sympathy. Recently I sent a card to a colleagues family after the matriarch passed away. I really need to start sending cards for happy occasions as well, although usually those are hand delivered. Everybody likes to receive mail….now you’ve given me a goal. Thanks, Becca!ReplyCancel

  • Becky GreenJuly 7, 2015 - 7:40 am

Actually, this is my “down time” for card sending….with our daughter out of school this summer. I usually send her a card every week at school, AND I don’t have many to send my cards to….but, the last time I made a card was for Father’s Day! I do need to get going on making a card though, my friend is having an upcoming birthday!!! ;) As for a hand written letters, that was at Easter.

GORGEOUS CARD BECCA!!! I am loving the blue & brown lately, in EVERYTHING!!!!!!! LOLReplyCancel

Hi Becca. All of my large family have hand made cards at Birthdays and Christmas. All messages I write by hand, using a real old ink pen that I used in school! I think it adds an extra special touch.

July 1st – sent a 4th of July card to my nephew (in the Marines) thanking him for his Service! In this digital deluge, technical talk (texting) seems to be the “norm”. However for all of us “old school” folks, receiving a hand-written word via a hand-made card is truly a treasure. I Love, Love, Love all of your hand made cards. Each one is more beautiful than the last one. Keep on inspiring all of us who believe in the hand-written tradition. P.S. I really love your Roman Romance Wedding Card – and I have a few upcoming weddings! Hint Hint – Wink Wink ?ReplyCancel

  • Gretchen WislonJuly 7, 2015 - 8:11 am

Gorgeous card, love the mixture of the brown and blue, colors that you don’t see very often. Now the answer to you question is much easier today, I sent a handmade card just about a month ago, I’m a little behind in sending out cards as I am very busy organizing my dies and stamps sets, have way too many, but don’t want to part with any of them, because very soon retirement is coming and then the funds go down Then I won’t be able to buy another so I will have to improvise on designing cards. It’s been awhile since I have written to anyone, and now I see really how important it is to have my words on paper in my handwriting. So soon Becca!

    Hugs and God Bless you,

    GretchenReplyCancel

In this world of high technology it is wonderful to discover sites such as yours that serve as inspiration. I have been paper crafting for years and recently through your site, I have been able to expand my knowledge and techniques to make amazing cards. The last time I sent a handmade card was 4 days ago. Through my cards, I have inspired others of this generation (my younger nieces for example) to not only make cards but take the time to write a beautiful message. Some of them have been collecting my cards for years. Thank you Becca, for sharing your knowledge with us.ReplyCancel

Becca – beautiful card. you are such an inspiration – keeps me buying dies so I can “try” to recreate your cards. Not yet made it to perfection. The last cards I made were 2 retirement cards for a friend of mine. She was quite pleased. I’m better at making 3D items but the more I try my hand at the cards, the better I’m becoming. It’s a work in progress. Thank your for your willingness to share your gift with us.ReplyCancel

  • Christine Harrop Oxfordshire UKJuly 7, 2015 - 8:37 am

    Hi Becca

Since I started card making I have never bought a card. Every card I send is hand made. It was my husband’s birthday a few days ago, and of course he got a hand made card. His cousin lost her husband a couple of weeks ago and that was another. I have four friends with a birthdays this month so it will be a busy time for cards. I actually wrote a “real” letter to the same old lady I mentioned yesterday, and that was the beginning of June. And whenever I visit my sister I take her a huge batch of cards so that she can use them for her special occasions. Isn’t this hobby wonderful? We can please so many people – and please ourselves at the same time! Love it.

    Hugs Christine xxReplyCancel

This is an easy one. Today I will send a handmade birthday card to a pen pal. I have all of my friends, family birthdays in my calendar so I get a 2 week notice and am able to send cards a week before the actual birthday. This morning I received an email from a friend who had received my July 4th card. She told me she saves all of my cards and displays them. Her husband (whom I have never met) tells her everything when a card comes to hurry and open it. In addition she told me this time he mentioned what nice handwriting I have. That made me smile since I think it is terrible.ReplyCancel

Again you share such a wonderful card here Becca. They´re always sooo elegant and perfect made in every detail, and also todays as well.
Last time I sent a handwritten card was actually the other day, as I sent a birthdaygift and card to a dear friend, and I ALWAYS give a handwritten cvard with any of my gifts, and some just get the card, but always written by hand. Some longer since I sent a letter, as I have to admit, that it doesn´t happen very often, but I send many cards through the year. As I get a nice amounbt, I ofcause also send a nice amount out again. I know, I get very disappointed, if I recieve a card, and it´s not handwritten, so that´s something I would never do.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

I just mailed two handmade birthday cards last week with handwritten messages to family members. But it has been a long time since I have written and sent a handwritten letter. I would rather type a letter as my handwriting is not so great.
    Love seeing your gorgeous cards!ReplyCancel

What a great idea!! I, too, mourn the loss of the written word. It is so much more fun to go to the mailbox when there is a card/letter in it. : ) But I don’t send letters as often as I should. I think the last time I sent both a handmade card and a letter was about 2 weeks ago. I have another on my to-do list and should really get to it soon. The last card I gave to someone was last week for their birthday. Don’t know if that counts, but there was handwriting in it. : ) Thanks for the chance to win; your cards are always so stunning.ReplyCancel

Because I love paper crafting and it nearly qualifies me for a 12-Step Program, handmade cards are sent out weekly from my house…but my 20-something children tell me this is a lost art because their generation rarely send cards anymore! I have a 90-year-old friend and she always writes handwritten letters which I cherish dearly. She’s made me realize what a treasure it truly is to give and receive the handwritten word! I so admire your talents, Becca. MANY thanks for this chance to receive one of your paper and bling treasures!ReplyCancel

I realized after I gasped in shock thinking, “You have 20-something children???” that you were talking age, not numbers of! then it made me laugh and I had to thank you for the giggles. and your children are right – it is a lost art.

    Good morning Becca,
Last night I spent a couple of hours making (please don’t laugh
because it took so long) to do a fascimile of yesterday’s white and purple card for my friend’s birthday which is Thursday (the same day as mine.) I write notes quite often to my Sis (only have one) who lives in Ohio and whom I will be visiting next month. Most of the time we speak to each other on Sunday evenings each and every week. But several times a year, I will make her a card and enclose a note.
I really love today’s card with the brown and blue which is not a combo I use very often but I just may start as this is very pretty. I do have a question – when you do cards, do you make more than one of the same card? You said you are reminiscing as you pull them out, making me think you make more than one. I sure wish I could just get time to have a stash!!

My most recent hand made card was for my nephew’s graduation, about a month ago. I am currently working on a card and latter to send to the local Police Dept. I was involved in a minor fender bender and the officer who responded just had the best demeanor. He was calm, informative, and an appropriate sense of humor and he really diffused the situation. LOVING this beautiful card, hoping to find the few stamp sets that I don’t have of yours when I can.

Thanks for this great 30-day giveaway. I cannot wait to see your next stamp sets and dies–I recently bought your new Spellbinders dies, 4 of the sets at least, cannot wait to play with those pocket dies and the accompanying dies. I think you have 5 out…

Oh, I love the blue and brown together…so, so pretty and one of my favorite color combos.

The last time I sent a handmade card and handwritten letter would have been last week. I’d gotten a nice card from a friend several states away. We’ve known each other for 30 years, and she surprised me with a thank you card, for our friendship and how it has lasted, how God has been present – we were in seminary together. I responded with a card of my own making and a letter as well. We came together in the “God works in mysterious ways” clause….and have stayed friends that way, too!

Thanks again for the way you are bringing together handcrafted, handwritten and gratitude this month. It’s really a lovely thing, Becca. I’m grateful for you, for this.ReplyCancel

I sent a handmade card to my brother and his wife last week. I currently cannot write for any length of time thanks to a carpel tunnel compression in my right wrist :-)

    Becca,
I’m ashamed to say it’s been quite a while since I’ve sent anyone a hand written letter. However my nephew is getting married next week, so I want to make him and his wife to be a handmade wedding card. Since he’s so special I’ll be writing words of love in the card and and some tips on how to spoil his new bride. I also have a friends daughter’s bridal shower in two weeks. Thanks for sharing and the chance to win your magnificent cards.ReplyCancel

The last time I sent a handmade card was yesterday. I sent a handwritten letter to my 2 sponsored children in Africa 2 months ago. My kids also enjoy drawing them a picture as well as writing a note with it.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card today. I made a card for my nephew’s birthday yesterday and today I made a card for my friend to is battle his 6 round of different cancers. I try to send him a card a week. Tomorrow, I will make a card for my cousin whose cancer has come back. This weekend, I “get to go” to Collinsville, IL for the great rubber stamp event. Can’t wait to see all the vendors —been savings all my change for a year to have extra “mad money” for this event!ReplyCancel

Just two days ago, I sent a handmade card to a friend to thank him for his good wishes on my new job. He’s a retired senior, so I was really touched at his thoughtfulness when he sent me a Congratulations card. So I made him a special thank you card and sent it to his house along with a batch of banana muffins :)ReplyCancel

    Good morning Becca,
I find amazing how you can get colours tthat you wouldn’t normally think about putting together look so good side by side. I love how the stamps you have used match in so perfectly with the design of the dies that you have used to put them on to, they look made for each other. Thank you for showing us some of your other cards that i haven’t seen before as each one gives us renewed inspiration.
I am so lucky at receiving 2 handmade cards on the birth of my first grandson 3 weeks ago and they were from virtual friends that i have never met before. They were absolutely exquisite and i count myself so very lucky tohave such beautiful hearted people in my life.
    Love and crafty hugs

The most recent handmade card was sent to my best friend who lives on another island. She loves the flowers, ribbons, pearls, sentiments and dies that makes it so gorgeous. A majority of the designs are similar to Becca’s cards which I use as a guide. I’m so thrilled to find someone who’s designs are ones that I can envision and learn from.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, I only ever send handmade cards, I only wish they all
could look like yours! My recipients always seem happy to get
something I took time and thought over though. It would be wonderful to receive one of yours. Thankyou for the opportunity.

Last handmade card was sent to my daughter for Easter. She really appreciates them & decorates her dorm room wall with my cards. Now I write letters in my cards, the last one sent was in Dec for Xmas.ReplyCancel

I think it depends on what they are taught growing up. If they are surrounded by loved ones and friends who hand make items for gifts, then maybe they will want to learn and carry on the tradition. For me, it started with my mom and my grandma. My daughter picked it up from me and her grandma. I hope and pray that this is not lost to cell phones and the computer!
Lovely card today Becca. Would live to receive one of your handmade treasures!ReplyCancel

Oh my! Where I live, sending homemade cards is risky with our postal system, so they are better hand delivered. But this does hamper the sending of cards to places further away! We do sometimes envy you Americans with your excellent postal service (LOL)ReplyCancel

It is hard to say how many cards I do in a week. Since I am still working part time I pull my monthly calendar up and sometimes will make cards 2-3 times at a sitting when I have the time. Monthly I can say I do about 4-5 cards.ReplyCancel

Another lovely creation. I send more letters than cards that are handmade. This is likely to change since my hometown Hallmark store has closed.ReplyCancel
