Day 6 – 30 Days of Giving

Saving the Written Word

If you’re not familiar with 30 Days of Giving and how you can receive this card,  read about it HERE.

Good morning friends!  I know I’m preaching to the choir but I have to tell you it feels good to be surrounded by like-minded people.   As I thought more about crafting,  which gives us so many varieties of cards to write in, I wondered — when did the change begin to happen?  I do get an occasional card but not sure the last time I received a handwritten letter?  Because there are so many ways to receive communication, I think our communication is typically brief these days.  Any correspondence is definitely better than none and as long as it has the personal touch, it’s a keeper!

To win the card shown above you must leave a comment on this post.    For today’s comment – when is the last time you received a handmade card, how about a handwritten letter?

The card that’s being given away today is shown above.  Just a note – this is a card that has been shown before and there is a possibility that some of the supplies that were used are currently discontinued, no doubt there will be something you can substitute – have a look through my galleries for alternative ideas.  Many things can still be found on the open market, just google and you’ll find that many retailers are still selling.

My last handmade card was for 4th of July from my longest friend from grade school! Needs less to say I didn’t get any done this year due to my husband getting a hip replacement and need extra TLC. This card you made had all my favorite song—purple-pearls-die cuts and embossing!ReplyCancel

Hi Becca my last hand made card was from my sister for my birthday in March this year. She is so much like you in giving special cards. As for a handwritten letter it must be all of 30 years ago. People just don’t write letters anymore. So sad but with technology its at a push of a button. So enjoy your beautiful and inspiring cards. A true blessing.ReplyCancel

One more gorgeous creation here today Becca, it´s just gorgeous.
I honestly can´t remember, when I got a hand written letter, but I´m soo lucky to have a bunch of great craftfriends, who always send me nice and handwritten cards for my birthday and for christmas, and I´ve also gott more, all the times, I´ve been into the hospital too, so I do have a huge box of lovely cards, that I sometimes tip out on the table and start reading all over again, or also some times, if I need a little crafty inspiration as well, cause there´s a whole load of great inspiration in all these. And I have saved all cards, that I´ve ever got from friends and family, so it´s quite a few over the last 56 years ha ha.ReplyCancel

Another beautiful card. Yes I agree with you, we don’t communicate with the written word much anymore. The last time I received notes or letters was on my birthday in May. It usually takes a special occasion to receive or send a note or letter. I think I’ll surprise someone and just send one (in a card) for no special reason other than “I Love you”. Actually that is a reason too.ReplyCancel

Gosh, I can’t remember the last time I received a hand written card. But I love to send them to people in my church that are going through an illness, hard times or just a cheery hello. It is sad to see this method of reaching out go away. As always, your card is simply beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.ReplyCancel

    Lovely card!

Two days ago. My sister-in-law sent a birthday card to my husband. She included a handwritten note. This year I started sending a “month” card to her. The card would have the month either stamped or die cut on it. She really enjoys receiving them. Got to go make my July card now!ReplyCancel

Oh this card is simply gorgeous Becca! I just love pearl swirls, but usually have trouble finding the right place to put them. I’ll have to work on that more.
The last time I received a hand made card was last Friday. I’m in a card swap with Card Making Tips and my July buddy sent me a beautiful card. She spent a lot of time making it too.
As to a handwritten letter, I can’t remember the last time for that one! Sadly, we rarely write letters anymore.

Boy that a tough one to answer, because I don’t know how long it has been, a very long time since I have received a letter, I guess I can’t even think when it was hand written , a typed with a handwritten signature , if that counts and I don’t think that counts. I did receive a couple of handmade cards from friends at Christmas so that helps some. But with the last couple of days in reading your blog it has really open my heart and soul to start thinking how important it is to reach out to family and friends. Now I off to find a card and send! I think I have a few in my stash!
    Hugs and God Bless,

Something about this card makes me want to put my feet up & have some tea! Another gorgeous creation!
Sadly the last time somebody wrote me a letter was probably my late grandmother who lived in another country before emails were commonly used. I don’t think I have ever received a handmade card other than from my own children.ReplyCancel

A lady I attend church with makes beautiful cards. She gives them at Christmas and birthdays. She even puts the greeting on the inside with a piece of paper and temporary tape so that you can take that greeting out and put another greeting in and send the card to someone you know. Good morning Becca. I remember when you posted this beautiful card. My sister and I actually tried to make it together on a little crafting day we had together when she came to visit me in Canada. The last handwritten letter was from my daughter when she was at school in England for a year which was 11 years ago. I received a handmade card for my birthday from my niece for my birthday in April. I always make handmade birthday cards for my whole family and friends and I make them specific to the person receiving them and put a lot of thought into the design. It is my little gift to them.ReplyCancel

About a week ago I received a handmade card from an 86 year old friend in California. We are neighbors during the winter months and during the summers when we are 2300 miles apart, we exchange cards or die cuts that we think the other would like. Included with the card is always a little handwritten note. Although we also talk on the phone at least once a month, the cards are a hobby that we both enjoy together. They help us stay connected all year.ReplyCancel

This card is beautiful. I love the white on white with a touch of my favorite color. I am fortunate to have several pen pals for the past 9 years. Not only do I receive wonderful cards but hand written letters or notes are inside. I also just received a thank you card from a daughter of a friend who graduated high school. Inside she wrote a beautiful thank you for the card that I had made. I saw very pleasantly surprised.ReplyCancel

I received a lovely handwritten note after chairing an after funeral reception at our church this past fall. The last handmade cards I received was last Christmas from a group of stamping friends and former stamping students. I send a lot of handmade cards with notes in them for birthdays, anniversaries, get well, cheer, sympathy, and thinking of you cards and also make sure my daughter, daughter-in-law and some elderly friends have my cards on hand when they want to send a card. Becca, your cards are always so elegant, beautiful and works of art!!ReplyCancel

My husband and I both worked as civilians on an Army Base up in No. California for many years. That is were we met and later married. We established many wonderful friendship through the years we were there and then in the early 90’s when several bases were closed, ours being one of them, hubby and I were transferred to So. California. We stayed in contact with several of them through the years, but one stands out the most. He and I still write to each other every year at Christmas. Since we have known each other for over 40 years now, but haven’t seen each other for over 20 we still stay in touch at Christmas thru our annual letters recapping all the major events that transpired with our families throughout the year. I have to say, hubby and I really look forward to Bill’s letter every year and I love writing mine to him and his family as well. It saddens me to think that that is in fact the only written correspondence that we actually do any more. Like most, we send cards with short little notes on them, or we stay in contact by social media or phone calls, but it not the same. Just not as personal as the letters that Bill and I have exchanged through the many years and my hubby and I really look forward to our Christmas card with our letter inside it.

I would have loved to get this card after my surgery last year! It’s beautiful. I think the last handmade card I got was Christmas 2 years ago, and then only because I sent them one first (I make all my cards to send). As far as a handwritten letter or note, probably not for a couple years and then only at Christmas. But my one friend who always wrote passed away last year, so didn’t get any last Christmas.ReplyCancel

Becca, today’s wonderful card would bring peace, healing and gratitude to any soul. It is gor-geo-us.
Now, the last handmade card I received was about 4 Christmases ago with a sweet hand written note on the inside giving me a news update. The last hand written letter I received was from my dear Mum in Dec. 2003 shortly after that she transferred to a nursing home near me and I saw her practically every day, so no need to write. God love her she slipped quietly away to her eternal rest on 21st Jan. 2005.
Sad isn’t it that so few of us bother to ‘write’ these days. Unfortunately due to arthritis my letters can’t run to pages and pages anymore! Perhaps that just as well!

May God bless you always for the pleasure and joy you spread.ReplyCancel

    Good morning, Becca!
The last hand made card I received was from my friend early last month. A group of us went to lunch to celebrate her birthday. Since we alre all crafters, we each made her a birthday card. She turned around & made each of us a thank you card. How sweet was that?
As far as a hand-written letter goes, I receive one each Christmas from a friend of my parents. She writes a letter & sends it inside her Christmas card. I in turn do the same for her. That way we know what has been happening in each other’s lives during the year.
My aunt used to write me before she passed away. She refused to use a computer, but continued to hand write notes. Otherwise, the rest of us write notes on the computer most of the time.
I do belong to a Calligraphy group in my community. All of our cards must contain hand-written Calligraphy. I must say, some of those ladies have beautiful! handwriting.ReplyCancel

The last time I got a handwritten letter (actually two of them) was Mother’s Day, when both my boys wrote me a letter of appreciation and wrote about their favorite “mother” memories through the years. You’re right, I get quite a few cards with short, handwritten notes inside, but very frequently do I get actual handwritten letters, so these two were especially treasured. Becca, I LOVE your cards!!! They are all gorgeous!!! It would be an HONOR to have one of your cards!! As for receiving a handmade card or a handwritten letter — a card about 3 years ago, a friend from Canada wanting to show me what she made with a new die she got!! We met in FL about 5 years ago and were together a couple of months in an RV park. I actually got her started with the Big Shot and making cards!!! And she was excited about what she made! It was BEAUTIFUL! As for a handwritten letter, can’t remember the last one I received!!! I DON’T get much personal mail here at all!!! YOU have a beautiful day!!! HugsReplyCancel

My pen pal and I exchanged HUGE/LONG letters to each other since 1947 but when we got techy we changed to email. Her DH mentioned we should have saved all those letters – they would be at least 8 pages long. We had so much in common: exchanged recipes/pictures and have exchanged gifts for our b’days and Christmas ever since. It had to be handmade gifts but then we both went to college/married/raised fammilies/got jobs and it changed. We both have twin granddaughters who are in their teens now. I still send her handmade gifts. Hoping I win your card as I love all your creations.ReplyCancel

    Hello Becca,

As always, your cards really make my heart sing, I love them! Thanks so much for having this 30 days of giving, I think this is my first time commenting due to some health issues…

I think it’s been a good 8 months since I received a hand-written note, and it was from a friend who moved away and I had given her a hand-made card with a note in it to say goodbye, and to express my gratitude for her friendship. I received a note from this sweet friend, and due to special circumstances, it was so wonderful to hear from her. Please pray for my friend–God knows her circumstances that I cannot list, she is a Child of the King!

I totally agree, we need to keep the ART of letter-writing alive! My grandmother who is now in heaven for the past 11 years was a fantastic letter-writer, and I wish I had kept all of her letters, they would mean so much to me now!

Thank you for your beautiful, generous heart, so evident in all that you do, Becca! I’m so sorry that your stamps are no longer available, I have most of them and will hunt down the couple I could not buy–your new flower one and the pay it forward, I think I have the rest including all of your sets in your kits. And I am grateful for all that I already have, so if I don’t find the others, then I am already VERY blessed!!! :) Hoping you will be creating more gorgeous stamps with another company as God opens the doors. How grateful we are to have your stamps, no one creates such beautiful stamps, and I love each set. Thank you!!! :)

Becca, this card is lovely with its gorgeous purple bouquet. lacy layers and pearls! Purple is one of my favorite colors.

I had to do quite a rewind to recall receiving a handwritten letter. I’m sure the last came from my grandmother. Though we spoke on the phone regularly, my grandparents and I corresponded by letter often. In fact, Grandpa insisted that every card include a letter—-not just a note below the printed greeting. They lived life at a slower pace, never using a computer or a cell phone.

In a more positive vein, I receive lots of handmade cards and handwritten notes from the sweet fourth graders I teach. I never tire of receiving them and make it a point to write back. We also write notes to thank the cafeteria staff for good lunches, to express gratitude to field trip sponsors, and to thank our music teacher for special programs. It is sweet to see gratitude through the eyes of a child.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca. Handwritten letter? If you mean a long correspondence, probably not for several years, postcards – only a few weeks ago & a thank you letter – that would be January. As for a handmade card, it would depend on your definition of handmade. The kind shared on blogs – I might give them out regularly but I have not actually received one myself for several years but a hand-drawn ‘scribble’ loving created by a child, that would be last March for my birthday.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, I receive very few handmade cards. The last one I received was at Christmas from a cousin in Australia who usually makes a card out of her latest family photo and includes a general update on family life which done on the computer and goes out to everyone. My last handwritten letter was from my aunt to thank me for having her son to stay with us when he came over on holiday from Australia. A lovely letter it was too, as can be said for your card!ReplyCancel

Becca I want to apologize for not leaving a comment on the card for the day. I get so into addressing the thought that I forget to say how beautiful all your cards have been for each day. You just inspire me with your creations. I received a handwritten letter thanking me for a visit from my daughter’s Mother in Law. She is such a delight in person and her written letters are just as delightful. She is from England so you can imagine her words and I enjoy them as if she is speaking to me with her remarkable accent. Its such a joy. Absolutely stunning card!
The last time I received a handmade card was for my birthday in March – in fact I had quite a few since I have lots of ‘craft’ friends! That was also the last time I had a handwritten letter since one of my friends, who lives quite a long distance away and who I don’t see very often, included a letter. Her cards are always made with photographs she has taken of the beautiful area in which she lives so, in a way, they are handmade too.

Like most everyone that has commented, I can’t even remember the last time I got a real handwritten letter. Probably 30yrs or so before my mother died. The last handmade card I got was an invitation to a baby shower a few weeks ago. Before that it was probably last Christmas.

Thinking about all this it makes you want to write a letter to someone and surprise them doesn’t it. Back in the 70’s 80’s, I used to have 50 pen pals from all over the world. I had to keep a ledger of when I received a letter from them, when I wrote back and what I talked about in the letter.

Does anyone remember the little magazines that you could buy that were pen pal mag’s. You could write a little about yourself and ask for pen pals. Or you could pick someone out that had written and write to them. I believe there were two different ones and I have saved just one from back then. I can’t remember the names of them—does any one else happen to? Oh, and sometimes someone would write in and ask for people to send a shower of cards to a particular person for their birthday or because they were sick. I would love to have a magazine like this back again.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card, Becca! It has been quite some time since I have received a hand made card and even longer since receiving a hand written letter. I received a hand made card for a thank you about a year and a half ago. Although I make and send cards all the time most people I know don’t. It always is such a joy to receive hand made cards and hand written letters. I am saddened that it seems to be giving way to technology. I believe there is room for both in the world!ReplyCancel

    Wow….such a gorgeous card!!

Sadly it has been so many years since I have received a hand written letter that I don’t even remember when or who it was from.

As for a handmade card, I received one this past Christmas from a dear friend. I so love a handmade card….to know that someone went to that much trouble to make a card for ME….such an awesome feeling.

I don’t think true crafters will ever give up making things by hand. Manufactured cards etc have always been around but crafters have also always been around. I used to manage a Hallmark store and I was always encouraging people to add their own touch….sparkles, bows, sequins. My customers loved that.ReplyCancel

I last received a hand made card two weeks ago on the 2nd anniversary of my husband’s passing. It was precious and the sentiment touched me deeply. I can’t remember the last hand written letter I’ve received, but have been going through boxes of saved letters from 45 + years ago and have been so enjoying re-reading some of them from special people in my life at that time. I have found it great fun to share the contents of the letter with the person who sent it to me. They’re always surprised I still have it and are filled with anticipation of what they wrote! Love your work, Becca! It’s always an inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing your passion with us readers. Card today is another stunner!ReplyCancel

Absolutely love today’s card Becca and it would be a perfect card to give to my sister-in-law that just came home Saturday from a two-week hospital stay. She loves all the handmade cards that I make for her and her husband and I’m sure she’d be thrilled to get this one too. The last time I received a handmade card was about one month ago. I had a couple of friends over to stamp and I had sent them each a message that they were to bring their own bagged lunch and I was going to provide dessert. Oh, this is a topic I can warm to! I heartily agree that genuine communication has suffered from such abbreviated and convenient methods available with technology.

But! the last hand made card I received was for my birthday in May. My wonderful niece always sends a handmade card — and writes lovely things inside. When she was young, I introduced her to stamping and it turns out she is quite talented. I think it has given her a depth of thought in the process.

AND! Just last week I received a handwritten letter. Can you believe it?? I give several small scholarships to high school students each year in memory of our son. One of the recipients parents wrote the loveliest letter telling me all about her daughter and what she is doing in the summer and her college plans. Let me tell you….it was such a thrill to read!!

Thank you for all you do that inspires lovely creations in which to bless others with our thoughts and encouragements. It is very meaningful!!ReplyCancel

I have starting making cards the past couple of years, and have been so inspired by you Becca! We have lost contact with reality by having everything on computer screens and phones. Rarely are pictures developed any more or hand written letters sent. It seems this world is so technology oriented these days and everything is disposable and easily replaced. It’s nice to try to keep up the dying art of handmade from the heart cards letters and actually printing pictures and scrapbooking them or putting them in an album. Society today is in too much of a hurry. just my thoughts!ReplyCancel

Becca today’s card is just delightful and would love to actually hold this one. I would have to be one of the lucky people as I received 35 handmade cards for my birthday in April. with some of them hand written letters inside. I just love them and have never bought a card since I started crafting, always a handmade card is given.
    Hugs Trish.ReplyCancel

The card is absolutely beautiful Becca. I have received a hand made card from my 7 yr old granddaughter who loves to scrap with me. We can spend hours together doing this. I do receive hand written cards from my sisters and brother. How wonderful is that! There is so many who do not get any cards, but my family and friends always get handmade cards. I just gave my office manager one the other day and she commented it is the most beautiful card she has ever gotten. This makes the card making worth it that someone gets so much joy out of one.ReplyCancel

It has been quite a long time since I have received a hand made card, however, it has been a long time since I have mailed any hand made cards either. I bet it’s been about 2 years for both. I don’t have anyone close that I know that makes hand made cards and due to a few physical and emotional issues, I stopped making cards a few years ago. I am however getting things ready to start making some cards!! I actually am excited about it.
But the last time I received a hand written note was just a few short months ago from my Great-Aunt. She ALWAYS sends a hand written note in her cards. They are still my most favorite to receive! I love to see the curves of her handwriting and it always brings back memories of when I spent time with her as a child.
    Hugs to you,

Hi Becca, what a beautiful card – I don’t think I have ever seen one of yours which wasn’t wonderful. If mine were half as nice as yours I’d be ecstatic!!
I last received a handmade card on Mother’s day from my teenaged daughter, she knows I love handmade cards so always takes the time to squirrel herself away in her bedroom to make one for me. I can’t remember the last time someone took the time to write to me, mind you I can’t remember when I’ve written a letter either (other than cards) so I’m just as bad really …ReplyCancel

Handmade card received: this one was easy, I have a very dear friend that sends one of her cards every month or so. I am truly blessed! Handwritten letter: This one surprised me…had to think long and hard. I have come to the conclusion that it was many, many years ago. I had two uncles that were great at writing letters. Well, one uncle’s was an adventure to read as his penmanship was atrocious! But I loved those letters because I spent so much time ‘with him’ while reading. :) Sadly, those letters stopped about 10 years ago as they lost the ability to communicate. In the process of answering this I have realized it’s probably been as long for any of my friends and relatives to have received a letter from me. I think I need to change that. Email is easier, no doubt about it, but not nearly as special or satisfying as a handwritten letter.
I am loving these questions! Thanks Becca!ReplyCancel

Once again, absolutely beautiful. I would be so thrilled to receive a card like this. The closest thing I have ever gotten would be a card with a few handwritten lines in it.

Speaking of receiving cards, you have said you send these out in dvd cases. I don’t understand how they fit with the ribbon and other raised surfaces. What am I missing and could you send a link where to get the cases.

Thanks for brightening up my day again!ReplyCancel

    Hi, Becca,
Thank you for so many opportunities to win one of your beautiful cards!

I can’t remember exactly when I received a handmade card, I’ll bet it was at least a couple of years ago. I do remember the handwritten letter since my birthday was last month and I received a note from my twin sister, with her card. Most of my birthday wishes were expressed via the internet so I am well aware how rare handmade or handwritten correspondence is sent. That’s why I make it such a priority.

    Love & blessings,

  • LynneZJuly 6, 2015 - 6:04 pm

My husband has written me many but as we get older, thee letters have become notes but they are handwritten and I save each one. I still send handwritten letters to my family. I don’t do it as often as I used to but I’ve always enjoyed sending letters. The last handmade card was from my Granddaughter and I cherish it too.ReplyCancel

Gorgeous card today, Becca. How I would love to be the lucky lady to receive this one. The last hand created card I received was a Christmas Card from my older sister. I am slowly getting her into paper crafts/cards. I helped her get started on her Christmas cards and I got her first one (the one with a booboo on it!) I showed her how to “fix” little ink smudges and told her to send this one to me. My younger sister would become addicted to card making very easily too. She is a quilter and has much money tied up in fabric and doesn’t want another “addiction” right now. I make her “quilt cards” for her special days. I made her a “Lone Star” Cancer Survivor Bag for the “relay for life” event this year. Turned out very pretty.ReplyCancel

I received a hand written letter about two years ago. Such beautiful handwriting but the content was not anything I would like to receive again but life goes on and you forgive and forget. I was teaching my dearest friend how to make handmade cards so while she was doing it I received a lot of them. She gave up on making them so it has been a while. Those of you who get handmade cards are so blessed as there is nothing like getting something from the heart.ReplyCancel

I think the last time I received a hand made card was from my gorgeous kids for mothers day year ago. I use to write letters to my friend in the UK all the time but we just email now instead. Sometimes I miss writing a letter but it does take so much longer than typing an email. I make hand made cards for my mum every few weeks and I know she appreciates them – she has them all stored in a drawer at home. I know most people love a hand made card more than a bought one – shows you were thinking of them. Thanks for the opportunity to win one of your gorgeous cards. I just love them and you are an inspiration.

These are all keepers and I love to look at them throughout the years remembering special moments. Whether they are simple designs or elaborate, they are all beautiful.ReplyCancel

I received a hand written note from the elderly couple whom we had just purchased their home. It had been for sale for a couple years and they needed to sell and move closer to doctors about 60 miles away. We wanted to retire and move back home so it was a win-win for all of us. They were very thankful that someone they knew bought their home as it was their pride and joy. He ended up passing away just a couple weeks after they had moved. We all knew he felt it was ok to go then as his wife of 65 years was going to live out her remaining years in a nice retirement home thanks to us buying their home.

Another of you beautiful cards. As I sit here trying to think of the last hand written letter I am struggling. I have received hand made cards. The last one was actually made by me. I made a box of cards for my mother-in-law and received one back for my birthday. Hand written notes are common but it’s been years since a full letter. It’s amazing to think about it. I have a group of friends from all over the US and one in Germany, I exchange handmade cards once or twice a month, I love it when I receive them and they usually come with a hand written note or letter.
It’s sad that the art,(and it’s an art) of hand writing is disappearing, with all of this modern tools, computers, emails, iphones, etc. no one gets or sends hand written letters anymore. Even kids now a days, don’t practice writing with pen and paper, their teachers ask them to turn in paper using computers.
I hope that this wonderful way of communicating is not lost forever.
Thank you for the chance to win, Becca.

I think there might be a possibility the younger generation might join the crating world. I am currently making wonderful memories with my 7 yr old grandchild. She comes over to my house and the first thing she says after hugs and kisses is “NaNa can we go to your crafting room?” Yes is always my answer as this time is short and I want to make the best memories with her. Her 18 year old sister is the opposite unless she has to have a card right away for someone but makes me do it. I guess that counts as time spent and honored she asked me to do it.ReplyCancel
