The Gift of Empathy

Happy day dear Blog Friends!  Today I have a new card to share and I have to say that as I made the card, I was swept with feelings of “real” empathy.  I say “real” empathy because in years past my naivety would allow to me to say that I understood how someone else felt when in reality there was no way I could really know how they felt.  There have been many “a-ha” moments spent once I have had the experience myself.  I’m sometimes embarrassed that I could even guess how one might feel.  One such time was when a co-workers dog passed away and couldn’t come to work, she was under the weather for the day.  I didn’t say a thing but I’m pretty sure I didn’t realize how devastated she was.  I never had pets as a child, but was fortunate to take in a rescue as a newlywed.  Many years later when she passed away unexpectedly
, I was w.r.e.c.k.e.d.   Looking back, I know I had not even been in the ballpark with empathy during my co-workers sad loss.  I was so glad when Our Daily Bread Designs created a sympathy set just for those occasions – today I used Dog Sympthy.  So many times people will say they were “just” a pet but I know otherwise.  We had “custody” of our daughters dog for several years.  She left her sweet companion with us because John had bonded with her and we’re certain that it prolonged his life.   On many occasions she came to warn me when he was in distress.

For my card I created a layered focal panel using Spellbinders™ Antique Frame and Accents and backed with the border from Spellbinders™ Damask Accents.  I used the wings from Spellbinders™ Home Sweet Home set, because I think the wings add a sweet personal touch and I love the tiny round tag.  I made these pretty little flowers for my last card using Spellbinders™ Bitty Blossoms — when they wouldn’t fit, I knew I’d be able to use them as a cluster on this card.

I seem to have this brown and pinky – peach colorway in my blood lately and I guess it’s because I’ve been making so many flowers.  Well, and it’s one of my favorites too.  I’ll be moving on to different colors – thanks for hanging with me through this phase :-)

Beautiful card and saying Becca. My pets are still in their prime but I don’t look forward to the day they’re gone. I didn’t have children but I do have Furbabies, a girl and a boy.

What a touching card! I need to make more pet-related cards and I’m glad you pointed me to Our Daily Bread Designs stamps for this card. I’ve purchased their stamps in the past and love the detail. I have several pets and it sends me into a tailspin when one of them dies. I also have friends who are pet lovers and so I always send a card. It’s just like one of your family, for sure.ReplyCancel

Thanks, Becca for another beautiful card. Our pets do become a part of our family and when they leave, it leaves a big hole in our lives, at least mine did when he died. I’ve had pets all my life but it wasn’t until I was much older did I truly appreciate their company and companionship.ReplyCancel

I lost my dog (Sadie) of 14 years—exactly 3 years ago today. I still think about her every day—especially on my drive into work when I pass the park that we always went to. As strange as this may sound, every morning I always say ‘hello’ to her when I drive past that park. Best dog ever. Love your card—it is absolutely beautiful.ReplyCancel

  • Ann robbinsApril 15, 2012 - 5:30 pm

This is very beautiful! I guess we all kind of pick a color and use it as a focal point ~ I do the same thing. Lately all my sympathy cards are white on white. DOn’t ask me why. Just saw one and thought it was magnificant. I too know how people feel when they lose a pet “friend.” They do become part of the family.
I really look forward to your posts (every day), I wished but wonderful and happy each day they come. God Bless.

This car d is very pretty. It is full of details. I always like the colors and I am not tired of it.
About an animal I understand how the lost can be hard, but I don’t accept
when a dog is treated more then a human. I condidere I dog must stay a dog .

Our 17 year old dachshund had to be put to sleep as she had congestive heart trouble and was blind and deaf.It. killed me to do it but she was suffering so.I could not bear to own another dog.It did give me a new understanding for pet owners and their fur babies.Today when I suffer a loss I think of our sweet pup being in Heaven(I have been told dogs do not go to Heaven and I beg to differ)it gives me comfort to know my love ones are being met by our sweet dog who has been made whole and runs to meet them.your card is beautiful ….I so enjoy your blog and many times it has applied to my life as well as yours…thank u for sharing.ReplyCancel

Pets are such a special blessing, because they give love unconditional, but so sad that many mistreat them. What a wonderful heart warming lovely card you made for such a time of loss. God has a special place for His creatures because He created them. He just expects us to love them and care for their needs as we love each other. Another part of the Golden Rule……..thanks for sharing……love the colors……..hugs and blessingsReplyCancel

Beautiful card, Becca, and now that dog is getting a little bit older, cat having difficulties after surgery, I truly do understand how others feel when they lose or are concerned about losing a pet. I am sure this lovely card would touch the heart of a friend or loved one that receives it. Gorgeous colors, soft hues and so much love put into every card you create. Thank you for sharing them with us.ReplyCancel

Becca! This is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE the pink & brown! No problems here! :) Are you going to show us how you did these flowers???????? I’m INTO making my own flowers here lately! :) LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember having pets pass away when I was younger and recently, just before Christmas, we had our sweet “Cherokee” put to sleep after having her for 14 years! She was such a SWEET & LOVING & PROTECTIVE & FAITHFUL dog! She just grew old & she was starting to have troubles…. I still remember her sweet face in the car as my husband drove her off to the vets. :( Our daughter REALLY took it hard! Even our other dog went through mourning for her. It is hard in loosing something who brings such fuzzy love to a family!ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
Well you must have been in my world today somehow. My daughter brought her guinea pig down to stay with me as she worked today, because he had been so bad last night. Well to cut the story short, he passed away while with me after struggling to even stand up. It was heart wrenching and my daughter was devastated, she had had him since a baby. I struggled all day how to tell her and although I broke my heart when he died (I’m a big sook like that) I couldn’t imagine how she felt when she came home from work.
We all get so attached to our pets don’t we.
I love your card today and you have used one of my new favourite dies, (which I have been using also to make Communion invitations for my great niece).
Hope you are well. Hugs Linda xReplyCancel

Absolutely gorgeous!! You have commented before about your penchant for beiges and pinky tones. It is nice to see you reach a little farther but never worry about too much of your favorites. The details are always so different and fascinating… that makes your cards anything but “same old, same old”… color aside. Pets are wonderful, if we really expected them to be like humans we wouldn’t be able to count on their unconditional love as we do.ReplyCancel

i have just loved all of the cards the dt has/have created with this set. yours is so beautiful. just over two years ago we went thru a lot – our pet pig of 17 yrs. died just after Christmas, then my mom died in july of 2010 after a three year battle with cancer, then about five mos. later my big kitty of 17yrs. died on new years day and then 7 mos. later our 10yr. old black lab died suddenly. i cried more when my big “fuzzer” kitty and our dog died than when my mom died. maybe it was just the culmination of a lot of grief experienced in that year and a half. anyway our pets are our family. and i firmly believe there will be pets and animals in heaven. i can’t wait to find out.ReplyCancel

What a very lovely card with wonderful sentiments. It is so beautiful with the pink…I love pink! Must be we develop compassion by going through things ourselves….not an intellectual understanding but a heartfelt one. That’s the language people hear in our voices in their time of need. Trials take the “tin” sound out of our words. Have a beautiful day, Becca.ReplyCancel

  • RufusApril 15, 2012 - 9:12 pm

Becca, gorgeous card. I really like the Antique Frame around the sentiment. Having lost “pets” that is one thing that I do know what someone is going through. However, until you’ve been there, you don’t really know what someone is going through. All you can do it try to understand and be there for them. Everyone is different, so how they deal with life and it’s adversities is different as well. But enough of being so serious…really like this one and can’t wait to see what all you’re working on in the background.
    Hugs,

Beautiful card Becca, decorated so nicely those punches go so well together. Love the grouping of the flowers. That little stamped charm is so cute. Empathy is something most of don’t have, but strive for. Unless you happen to be in the same situation we can say we understand but we really don’t. A heart that empathizes is a wonderful thing. Becca,
How are you? I miss your regular postings and am always excited to see you in my inbox. This is such a lovely card. I just received this spellbinder die last week, and have already used it several times. It is such a gorgeous frame, and really a nice large size. I participated in a tag swap and the theme was french country. It was perfect and I know that this will be one of those dies that I will use over and over again. I am so impressed with your sweetness Becca, that you extend to so many others. You are truely a kind soul and this card just says it all. Being an animal lover myself, it is hard to express just how attached you can get to them, and they to you. Sometimes I think they are more human then some actual humans. They definitely are wonderful and faithful companions and more loyal then most people. Have a wonderful week.
