How to Use Intricate Dies and Patterned Dies for Mincing

Tutorial by Becca Feeken - How to Use Intricate Dies and Patterned Dies for Mincing - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Hello friends, I’m back with another video to show you how to use intricate dies and patterned dies as the basis for your mincing.  Even if you don’t have a machine you should peek in on this one.  Adding the Minc brings another whole dimension to dies.  Whether it’s a small touch or an entire background, it has a look that is quite unique – polished,  yet unique!!  I have to confess that I’ve been playing with the machine for many months and wanted to blog about it before I started using it on my cards.

Tutorial by Becca Feeken - How to Use Intricate Dies and Patterned Dies for Mincing - www.amazingpapergrace.com
I’m sharing two cards today.  The card above card features  intricate die cuts and makes use of some double borders.  I suggest having a look through your stash to figure out which dies work best as long as there is some defined detail, it’s worth a try to run a copy then minc.  I’ve used Spellbinders Labels Forty Nine along with Spellbinders Floral Ovals and Spellbinders Classic Ovals Large with a detail piece from Spellbinders Swirl Bliss Pocket.  The ‘celebrate’ sentiment is from Spellbinders Phrase Set Two.

Above that is a card that makes use of a pattern die to make a full background.  It ultimately uses Spellbinders Grate Effects for double duty – background and overlay.  I’m using the negative space from the word Hello in Spellbinders Phrase Set One that is mounted onto a hand cut pennant and decorated by Spellbinders Heirloom Oval.

Hi Becca…love your incredible cards! The intricacies you can create with the Minc are stunning…Sad that this can be done only with Laser printers! But I will be content to admire yours!ReplyCancel

After seeing yesterday’s videos, I couldn’t help but wonder just which dies and how intricate you could get with the Minc. Today, you have answered that question and have forever changed how I will look at my dies. Does that mean I should buy more dies? Hmmm….

Seriously, Becca, you truly have opened the world of Minc, increased the way we can use our dies and added more ways to sparkle and shine the world of paper crafting. By sharing your ideas, you have given me the ability to make projects that look more professional. I will always be grateful! I love your cards today, especially the blue and silver, even though I am a gold kind of gal. To say they are stunning would be an understatement and the Minced cross is beautiful!

Thank you for being the person you are, Becca. Blessings always!ReplyCancel

Becca, maybe I missed this but… When you make a copy of the die do you place the die cut side down or do you place the flat side of the die on the copier glass?
    ThanksReplyCancel

    • Becca FeekenOctober 21, 2015 - 8:01 pm

Rosie, it seemed just a tad more tidy to place the flat side down but sometimes with a non-symmetrical die you have to place the cut side down. Cut side down will work but the important thing is to make it so that you can match it up to cut it out.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
You have opened up a whole new world. I saw the Minc on HSN with Anna Griffin when she brought her’s on the show. I have to admit that these cards of yours are so very beautiful but I am not going to get drawn in on this one, babe! I will just have to go on admiring your cards and hope you have one on a Friday giveaway which I might win! LOL. I truly loved all three you have shown. Bless you always.

Ann, you make me smile! Duly noted, I sure can’t blame you for limiting your exposure. I have a similar list of roads I’m not going to go down. This isn’t one of them tho, ha-ha. I decided to do a video series, not to talk anyone into buying, but so that once I get into the swing of using it on my cards, the questions have all been handled in advance. Some will want to do this manually . . . I’m definitely a creature of convenience tho’ – I’ll be using this often.ReplyCancel

Checking wallet….nope, not yet. Not only do I need the Minc machine, I need a laser printer. Sigh. Someday soon

I do have a question. Do you have problems sending 80# paper through your printer? I don’t always have such good luck with that.

Thanks, Becca of great tutorials on using this new tool!

Please be careful with feeding your printer with 80lb card stock. I broke my laser printer using 80lb. It would take 60lb just fine, but not the 80lb.ReplyCancel

    • Becca FeekenOctober 22, 2015 - 12:43 am

I don’t have any problem with 80# but forget 110# – it jams every time. I’d sure take a piece of cardstock to the store and try it out before I purchased. I have an old, old Canon laser printer and it’s a workhorse. I’ve probably had it for 8 years.ReplyCancel

Joni, there’s another machine similar to the Minc. It’s called the TODO. It’s availble on CreateAndCraft.com. It hot foils n die cuts too. You might check it out. It’s rather expensive but was reasonable when first introduced. It accepts ALL Sizzix n Tim Holt n deep dish dies as well as wafer thin dies. It has a dial thatReplyCancel

WOW! I am going to have to train my eyes to see like you do Becca. So many dies, so many possibilities to Minc! Now if only my laser printer was not broken. :>(ReplyCancel

  • Donna CooperOctober 21, 2015 - 8:41 pm

adjusts to thick and thin dies. But it doesn’t laser copy ;-). I’m not affiliated with Create and Craft but am just a fan n buy most of my cardmaking materials there.ReplyCancel

Fantastic Becca. I had never seen this machine or heard of it until your last videos. I had said to my husband a few days ago that I have enough supplies to last the rest of my life BUT I was wrong – I LOVE this……………..
I learn so much from you. I hadn’t stamped for 2 years due to health problems & just started to attempt it again and you show these incredible techniques & I am anxious to get to it.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, this is a fantastic idea I have the minc machine but unfortunately it is only a laser printer not a photocopier so I don’t think I do these but it might be worthwhile to go to my local shop to do some as these beautiful cards. Christina was on C&C with your latest dies and they are gorgeous.

Fab video and fab cards as always! To minc or not to minc? That is the question I am pondering. I do like it but don’t think my printer is laser one. Will have to check that. If it is I think I will be tempted! If not, not sure I’d want to faff about getting copies done in shops.ReplyCancel

I wish I could afford a laser printer and a Minc machine, unfortunately not possible at this moment in time as money is scarce at present, but they are definitely going on my ‘Wish List’, and I’m looking forward to your further videos and techniques with the fabulous Minc machine. Thank you for all your inspiration.

    Hello Rebecca…
This machine is wonderful but i have a question for you…I don’t understand how to create the black image of dies that i have seen in your beautiful videos…waiting for a kind answer regards AdaReplyCancel

    • Becca FeekenOctober 22, 2015 - 7:57 am

Hi Ada, you get the black image by going to your copy machine, placing die on glass and making a copy of the die. I have a laser printer/scanner that is much like a copy machine so I simply lift the cover, place the die on the scanner glass and hit go. That will produce a black and white replication of the die with toner based ink.ReplyCancel

I do not have the large minc machine, but I did buy the Anna Griffin minc. Figured it was large enough for cards and embellishments. I love it and I love the three videos you have done using my favorite Spellbinder dies. I do have a question for you and I see that no one has asked this question so far, but of course you know that I would be the one who had to ask. LOL. What laser printer do you use. I know you said that it has the scan function as well and how heavy of card stock will it accept??????? Like most, I have an ink jet printer, but now that I am incorporating mincing in so many of my projects, it is time to invest in a hopefully not toooo expensive laser printer. I figured you would know. Thanks, MarcieReplyCancel

  • ChrisOctober 22, 2015 - 3:45 am

Well, I’ve been undecided about the Minc for several weeks now but having watched your videos and seen the beautiful results you have achieved I have now placed an order for one.

What an enabler you are… :)

    Hi Becca,
Love the idea’s and techniques you have shared. I too have bought the Anna Griffin minc machine, and my daughter gave me a laser printer her office was no longer using. It does not have a scanner but I think I can work around that. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to more video’s. They are great!ReplyCancel

Becca, these videos are awesome. I bought the Minc machine and thought I’ll just go o Staples to get items copied in toner ink, but these videos make me want to run out and buy a toner cartridge copier.
