Happy Mother’s Day

Late day greetings (blush) :-).  Guilty!!  Guilty of sitting outside and enjoying the fresh air today.  No worries, I was dreaming of a flower I wanted to make and I made it.  This was my first try and it spurred lots of other thoughts and variations.  At any rate, I thought it would be a pretty embellishment for a Mothers Day Card.  This month Our Daily Bread Designs released two sets of stamps for Mothers (Day) and Fathers (Day).  Here I’m using the Happy Mother’s Day set with the traditional Mother’s Day sentiment however, there are sentiments for daughters and grandmothers plus the sentiments can be used just the celebrate the strength of each gender.

Oh by the way, K & Company released a pad of paper called the Best of Brenda Walton that I picked up at Michaels a couple of weeks ago.  Well color me grateful (after I did my happy dance) because it brings back so many of the papers I love.  This is one of them.  What a gorgeous paper – I tried to keep it as clean as I could *smile*.

Because I wanted the flower to have a solid base and a foundation to glue all of my pieces to, I used Spellbinders™ Eyelets Pendant as a collar.  Then to embellish the flower I picked the most delicate scrolly Spellbinders pieces to make the ensemble.  For the sentiment I used Spellbinders™ Fancy Tags and for the curly flourishes I used Spellbinders™ Doodleparts.   My card is 6" x 6" as are most of my cards and for the envelope I used my Martha Stewart Score Board with its envelope making instructions.  The envelope formats out to 6 1/2" x 6 1/2".  Yes, this card actually fits in that envelope.  I’m not in the least bit sad if the petals have to lay down – when it comes out of the envelope it’s still attractive and most people who get this type of card know to fluff up the bows.  Wink, wink you know what I mean.   One of the best conversations my stamping girlfriends and I have is what kind of card to send to various recipients.  Yep, there are some people who toss cards a week after the event and there are those who keep them forever.   I try to keep that in mind when I’m designing.  How about you?  Inquiring minds want to know ;-)

Lovely card! I made my Mother’s Day card today, too as I want to show it on Claire’s blog tomorrow. She’s having a waltz – yay! My, but when I started writing down the deets, Irealized I had a lot of details! That brings me to your question: I definitely make design choices based on the recipient. I was once going to give a B’day card to my sister’s friend. She quietly told me her friend keeps nothing. Well, that was easy for me, design-wise, lol! My sister and a couple of my girl friends have told me they keep all my cards. One, in fact, is going to make a collage of them in a shadow box. That is some compliment! I must admit there are some of my own cards I choose to keep, as well.
    Have a great w/e!ReplyCancel

Yes —- I do keep in mind what my recipient will do with my card. One lovely lady has a basket she keeps all the hand crafted cards she receieves. Another one tosses them the next day. Guess who get the cards with time invested in them? :-) I love your card for today. that ribbon flower is stunning!ReplyCancel

Beautiful colors and just love your flower! I also keep in mind my recipient when designing. I made birthday cards for people in my office and the other day someone asked me about the cost and I said it wasn’t too awful much but the best part was walking around the office and seeing my creations sitting on people’s desks, even men!! It is always nice to make something for someone you know will appreciate it! Hugs, StephanieReplyCancel

Another gorgeous card! Love the paper. I am going to a Scrap Fest tomorrow in Kitchener On so will have to keep an eye out for it. My daughter keeps all the cards and baskets I’ve made for them. In fact; I’ve been known to take pictures of the cards after I’ve mailed them out to her daughters….ReplyCancel

I would never throw one that beautiful away! I make a lot of little favor-type gifts, usually containing chocolate. It always surprises me when someone just rips into, hardly noticing my efforts. I expect it from kids, but lady-friends? At least give it a second look! On the other hand, I feel strange when I see they are hanging onto something in which the chocolate must be might stale by now. (“Oh, I’m glad you liked it, but eat the chocolate truffle or I will!”) No pleasing me, I guess! :o)ReplyCancel

I love your card. When I send a card I don’t sign it, I put a note in it and hope that after they enjoy the card they will send it on. I have friends who keep everyone but I also have friends who send them on. I have also gotten them back later on as a thank you for something else from the person I sent it to. One with an apology because she wrote on the card before she thought about it.

Your cards are sooo spectacular. I have saved every card I have received since 1985. That was a long time before I ever started making my own cards. I recently had a friend send me an email, saying she could never send me a “regular” card, since I send my “hand crafted card”. I told her… I love to receive cards and still go back and read and enjoy all of my “regular”cards as well as the hand crafted ones I receive now. I look forward to your inspirations as well.

I don’t have a large family so I don’t make as many cards as some people make. I make the nicest cards I am able to make. When I give a card to someone I know I enjoyed making it and hopefully they enjoyed getting it . If they keep it I am pleased, but if they don’t keep it I know it conveyed my sentiments that they were important enough for me to take the time to make a card rather than grab a quick one off of a rack in the store.ReplyCancel

I have been asked to make someone a mothers day card, this is a beautiful example, i love the flower–wish i had your creative mind but since i don’t , i will try to make the flower in my feeble way and i know it will never come out as beautiful as yours. do you still do tutorials on line ?? and if so , where would i find them. the lord has truly blessed you and i know you are a true blessing to the recipients of your cards. I teach techniques on rare occasion at my house with a few girlfriends, i don’t get to do it much as i am disabled and just wish i could do more but going over a tutorial of yours with the girls would be so awsome ! keep up the good work and always remember this saying that has spoken to me in a special way and i pray it will speak to you also” The greatest use of a life is to spend it on something that outlasts it” i’m not sure who wrote it , but , your cards will leave alot of people blessed and can change the outcome of their day, it most definatley can outlast you ! when you think of the impact it has on others, wow ! God Bless, judy baileyReplyCancel

    Becca,
I love this flower, and I know what you mean about who gets a card. I don’t buy cards anymore since I have to justify the stash somehow, but I always give simple cards to people who toss them or show no appreciation. If I know the card will be appreciated I will put more effort in it. I used to get discouraged that people would toss the card or not say anything but then I realized that I made them for me and not them. If I enjoy making the card then it was worth my time.ReplyCancel

  • RufusApril 16, 2010 - 8:41 pm

I must confess that I do think of who is receiving the card. If I think they will really appreciate and notice the details, then they get a more detailed, time consuming card. If I think they’ll just glance at it, then they get a simpler, fast card. I also, frequently write my notes on an insert so that they can then use the card to send to someone else.
This Mother’s Day card is a beauty. Will have to look for that paper pack, maybe it’s got some of my old fav’s in it! You continue to amaze!

    Becca,

I really enjoy your cards and usually print out directions and the supply list for later card creation ideas. So far, I have only had one former co-worker ask, “What do I do with the card after the holiday (or birthday)?” One of my friends asked for help in making an album to store all the cards I send her. Two of my friends pull cards out of their collections from past years to make birthday or holiday displays on a table or mantle. Needless to say, those friends have lots of time and attention put into creating their cards!!!

  • Pat JandacekApril 16, 2010 - 10:00 pm

There are very few recipients of my cards that I wonder about whether they save them. Most everyone at one time or another makes the comment that they save all my cards. I know several who put out all the Christmas cards I’ve made each year as a special display. My sister-in-law gifted me with a collaged placemat of cards sent to her and my brother. (I had mixed emotions on that one but know her heart was in the right place! and I do like the placemat.) I had a friend return my cards to me when she was downsizing because she couldn’t bear to throw them away. She now enjoys receiving them and returning them to me shortly after…and I’m glad to get them back. One man told me he had sent his get well card from me on to another friend who would appreciate it because he wasn’t about to just throw it away! When my youngest sister died I claimed the scrapbooks she had compiled of my cards. There is the joy in making them; yet it surely does do one’s heart good to know they are appreciated!! The other thing I’ve noticed: cards that are sent to me are selected for their beauty and uniqueness! It’s like they don’t want to just send a ‘regular ole’ card. I rather hate to see them spend the money on them but I do appreciate the thoughtfulness behind their actions and so, naturally, I save them. Thanks for all your sharing and beautiful creations.ReplyCancel

Becca, your latest card is magnificent! Love the colors and esp. the flower! Yes, I do keep the recipient in mind when designing cards, esp. b’day
& get-well cards. Most of my major holiday cards are made in batches though, but even then I might add a little something special for the ones who tell me they keep them &/or put them out each holiday. That’s flattering & you feel like your time/effort was well spent. Since you share your card designs with so many, I hope you know how special we all think you are! TFS! Carol :)ReplyCancel

I am THRILLED to see your matching envelope and your envie specs!!! And it is soooo beautiful to boot–(of course it is!) I was just in Michaels this evening on a quick trip in and out, and for once I skipped over the paper—darn! I love Brenda Walton’s designs!!! Ok, I might have to squeeze in some time tomorrow but might have to wait until Sunday to get back over there. Your card is beautiful; I love the lime green and pink combo. It is a very girly-girl, classy piece of art, Becca! I have a big stash of scrapbook stuff, and actually have only recently started making cards, but I’d have to say that I sure hope no one actually throws my cards away. One girlfriend told me she put it on her fireplace to display, and said she didn’t think she’d throw it away–I told her she better not! And if she was going to, she better give it back to me. Her and two other girly friends told me I could sell my cards, but I said, “You guys should see Becca’s cards! SHE could sell hers. I am SOOO much an amateur and am just barely getting my feet wet!” They are my Guinea pigs and don’t even realize it! heheReplyCancel

Gorgeous card, Becca. Please share a tutorial with us on how to make the flower and how to make perfect bows… yours are always so pretty.
Yes, I often consider who is getting the card before to determine what effort / embellies to put into it … sadly, many don’t bother to keep or appreciate them, but certainly there are those who do. But for me, the joy is largely in the hands-on making of the card …. I don’t really like ‘digi-stamps’ and computer generated work… your handmade cards are pure artistry.ReplyCancel

That is a stunning card Becca. For me making cards is my therapy and my down time and I love the process so much it matters not if the recipient keeps the card for 5 minutes or 5 years….the joy was in the making and the giving and that’s what matters most to me. xLReplyCancel

  • Susan GApril 16, 2010 - 10:56 pm

to me, THIS card is a gift in itself!!

Sadly I think most of the people I know, do not save cards. Maybe my mom…

Due to this fact I find myself holding back often, on what I would put on a card or into a card…thinking it is going to get thrown away in a few weeks. I am disabled and on SS which is a mere pittance of what I earned as a F/T MRI Technologist. So It is a frugal thing for me…do I really want to put pricey ribbon and charms on a card that someone is going to toss?…Or can I get away with some buttons and cheaper ribbon.

I find I rather put the “money products” into my scrapbooking.

Right now my goal is getting my hands on some Nestabilities as I have none. I would also like a few more embossing folders.

This is such a pretty card! I really know what you mean about not wanting to cover the paper sometimes because it is so beautiful, though you, Becca, always manage to add to the beauty. Sometimes I end up just not using the paper!

I wish I had learned the lesson about tempering the design to suit the person: a few months ago, I was still new to embossing and a 50th birthday was looming. I sent for a 12 x 12 paper that I chose – yes, a single paper that I could not find locally; then spent all of my precious Saturday – several hours of it, anyway – sketching, embossing and glittering the design on the paper; stamping and using a host of new techniques, until I got it as right as I was ever going to get it. It was my best ever card (still is!). As I was then running late for the party, I popped the card in the present bag and gave it without scanning or photographing it.

A couple of weeks later, I asked if I could borrow the card back for a little while so I could photograph it, only to be told that it had been thrown away within the week. I was so shocked. It taught me to always photograph or scan a successful card and once it’s given, to release the ownership of it, no matter how much of myself went into its making, but it is a hard lesson to learn.ReplyCancel

My husband and I often discuss whether or not the people I send cards to appreciate the thought and time I put into them. I know that some of my family and friends save them, one of my girlfriends has even framed a couple and has them displayed in her home. But many don’t even acknowledge the card. But I work just as hard on every one’s card, because I care about them and derive pleasure myself in the creating. Hi Becca~

What a wonderful card. I love her papers as well. Do I feel another Becca tutorial coming on with these new flowers you are making and thinking about? I hope so. This is a beautiful flower.

I save, save, save every card from everywhere for everyone in our family. Should I only save those with
special messages, or being hand made? Sometimes I use cards for examples…take a bit of this idea…a smidge of that one. So, I have an entire closet full of cards family members have received over the years.

Would you please write about what you suggest we do? Some of the cards received over the years are well, nothing special. And, please, start your new tutorial! :) We love you, Becca!

I have to say, that I send my “fancier” cards to people that I know will appreciate them the most. For the ones that I know will toss them soon after receiving them, I still make nice cards, but not as intricate as for the ones who will ooh and aah over them, and cherish my effort. I must say that I was quite touched by how appreciative my minister’s wife was when I sent them a sympathy card on the death of their brother-in-law. She loved it, said she was going to keep it, and was going to scrapbook a page using it. Definitely, other scrappers/stampers “get” your efforts.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card, as usual. I, too, think of what will happen to my card when it is in someone else’s home. I hope it is cherished.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card once again but alas, I have no mother or grandmother living to send one too. I do make cards for some ladies in a nearby nursing home that have no family to visit but they have not had children so I think I’ll just them a Welcome Spring card.

I too wonder how long people keep the handcrafted cards I make. I sell a few to the ladies in the quilt guild I belong to and one of them stopped and said, “I shouldn’t buy your cards. I still have the last ones I bought because I like them so much I don’t want to give them away”. That was one of the nicest compliments I have ever had.ReplyCancel

    what a beautiful card !
I so agree with ‘Marg” Some people I send cards to keep them others don’t … but that doesn’t change a bit the way I make my cards …I just love making cards and letting my creativity pour out.
    Have a great Sunday !ReplyCancel

    Hello Becca,

Fantabulous! Once again, you’ve hit on a diamond.

About the sending cards to people – I, too, think before I make a card for someone. If that someone is not a ‘keeper’ type, I make a simple card (still nice but not over the top) and send it off.

If they, like my friend Debbie, have a dedicated box for cards I’ve given her, she gets one that might, perhaps, take me two days to finish.

For others who would keep the card for a while, at least, before finding it unnecessary to keep longer, I will put some more effort and thought into the embellishment of the card.

Always, though, I keep in mind the person who is receiving the card and make it to their taste rather than mine. Masculine types of cards in particular.

    Anyway, that’s my two-cents-worth.

Enjoy the week ahead and keep on keeping on!ReplyCancel

Your cards always make my eyes pop out, they are so stunning. I know what you mean by sending cards to those who truly appreciate them and won’t throw them in the trash after just a week or so. I can’t bear the thought of all that time and effort going down the drain (or garbage chute!). Some of the cards that I have spent hours on remain in my collection or are sent to other die-hard stampers, but I try to send as many out as I can because I am trying to be an encouragement to others (at the same time as having an obsessive hobby!!!!)

Hope you had a wonderful weekend,

Oh Becca, so glad to hear your knee is doing well enough for you to be doing your happy dance!!
You make the most gorgeous cards! You have certainly been blessed with a wonderful gift and i appreciate you sharing it so generously with us. I love seeing your new creations!
i do put a lot of work into my Christmas cards and everyone on my list receives that one. i know some people will not appreciate the work as much as others, but i just focus on those who do. Those who don’t, i just hope the enjoy the card even for a moment.
Now when it comes to birthday cards, i am more discerning.
    Thanks Becca!ReplyCancel

love the card, and in response to your question, yes i do take into consideration who i send cards to and how much time is invested in them to each recipent. many of my recipents keep my cards cause those that dont dont get them to often. get this… i have a friend here is town, she is a family friend, not close but i sent her a anniversary card cause my father was going to a 50th anniversary celebration and needed a card. it was very simple with wild asp. paper (real pretty) a few emb. and a tag wth 50th on it, I want u to know she called me and had a fit over this card, really made my day, so i try to send her cards. for easter she made us a peanut butter pie for the card i sent. isnt she sweet, oh and yes she keeps them!! funny thing is she is the wife of one of my dads ex-bosses /friends and we never really spoke now we have become good pals. it amazing what our cards can do!! I have several stories i could tell u but that is enough for now!!ReplyCancel
