Day of Giving Friday: Lovely Day

Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Elegant Labels Four - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Good morning sweet friends!   Today is a Day of Giving Friday, so the card shown above is up for grabs by a reader today, simply leave a comment and one name will be picked from the comments.  For more information about Day of Giving, on the Features menu above select FAQ’s and scroll down to number 11.

It’s been a week of blessings in my life.  My sweet girl finally got a job after a long time filled with doubt.  It’s so hard to tell someone that things always work out, but they always do :-)  I’ve been busy designing and got happy mail with new dies that I designed.  It kinds of reminds me of what it used to be like when you took a picture with film — you thought it might be okay but once developed, you see the actual picture and it turns out better than you thought – bliss!  Speaking of real pictures (I mean the kind you can hold in your hands), I’m always afraid that so many of our memories are stored on a hard drive or on a phone.  Over the past many years I’ve been the keeper of some of my extended families real pictures – I’m scanning them so more than one of us can have them.  Part of the allure of old pictures is knowing a picture was a part of someones life – it rested on a mantle, it hung on the wall, it lived in someones wallet, it was in a stack on the kitchen counter for family to peruse and remember.   I try to imagine what was going on when the picture was snapped.  Pictures talk!  For my digital pictures, I’m diligent about backups but not so good at getting pictures printed out.  That leads to my question for you today . . .

For today’s comment –  Isn’t there something special about an old photograph that you know rested in someones hand, giving them joy so many years ago.   Do you print your pictures or simply store them for another day?

Well, I only do Word and email so my husband handles all the pictures and prints out the ones I want. And yes, there is something very special about old pictures that you know meant a lot to someone. And if that old picture is of your grandparents’ young, courting life you see them in a whole new way!ReplyCancel

Perfect timing on your message and topic. Preparing to sell our house has required going through closets, boxes, etc. Finding old, “real” photos has been a wonderful reminder of the importance of capturing and sharing memories. I tend to take photos but rarely print them. Really gotta get started on scrapbooking.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca what a gorgeous card the color is so elegant. Reminds me of the dresses women wore in the Roaring 20’s just beautiful. I have a copy of a very old picture of my Mama when was 16-17 years old. She had to borrow the dress and jewelry she has on-because she did not have much and needed the picture. My uncle gave me the picture and for a Christmas I had the picture enlarged to 8X10 and with a letter I wrote-I gave a copy of the picture to my sister and brothers. Of course they all had them framed. Mine is displayed and when ever I am feeling sad or going thru a hard time–I go touch her photo and I have many times talked to her. Thank you for touching me with this memory. Have a great weekend. Congratulations on your little girl getting a job–she is blessed as you. RaquelReplyCancel

I have a copy of an old photo of my father which I enlarged from a wallet sized photo that my mother carried for years in her wallet! My copy is grainy and not of the best quality but it has special meaning for me so I made a scrapbook page of it for a family album. I love the colors in today’s card! Would live to win it so that Zi could give it to a special friend for her birthday! She loves all shades of blue!
Thanks as always, Becca, for sharing.ReplyCancel

I have a box of pictures from both sides of the family. I look at them and wish someone had written on them when/where/who/why (shouldn’t complain I didn’t do it either). I get misty-eyed when I see a picture of my dad skateboarding with my son. Daddy is in his topcoat and hat and having a ball. So is my son.
Those are the pictures I treasure and remember.
The roses are so pretty on the card. Love the sentiment – the card would rest in a place of honor – to welcome my friends.
thanks Have a wonderful day yourself.ReplyCancel

PRINT!!!! If at all possible! I love to look at my people – family, friends, events we’ve enjoyed, nature’s beauty! But I am selective. Only so much wall space, you know! :)
Fabulous card! I really am enjoying my education in die cutting from your site! This is a terrific saying too! Have a LOVELY day! My sister has her own when she’s trying to excuse herself from a long-winded friend, Thank you so much, and have a ‘quality day’!
It’s GREAT!!!, but … looses something in the printed translation… you’d have to hear her say it to get the full benefit of her intonation :) Have a lovely day, Becca!ReplyCancel

Oh my goodness, Becca, old photographs are so very special. I have a lovely old wedding picture taken of my grandparents in the early 1900’s. I can just picture my grandmother holding and cherishing this picture. It brings me close
to them again, since they are now gone. Some pictures I print out and frame or keep close, and others I hold in a safe place for looking at or printing for
    some special day.

There are three phases of a photo’s lifespan: (1) the sentiment at moment the image was captured (2) the sentiment the printed image brought (resting on the mantle, in a worn wallet, by the bedside) and (3) the future sentiment that bubbles up by a generation who only know those in the photo through stories – oral and written.ReplyCancel

Love all the layers on this card, just lovely. I have SO many pictures on my computer; use to print them but have gotten lazy about it. Beauty of a card!
A few years back I had my mom bring down all the old slides from when I and my siblings were younger, took them to SAMs Club, and had copies made for me, mom, and my younger sisters. Love them! I have so many pictures now from cell phones, iPads, and other cameras, that I don’t know what I’ve printed and what I have not printed. I need to organize them by folders and just start getting them printed. It is so cheap to print pics now, it’s a same people just keep them locked up in thier phones, computers, and tablets.ReplyCancel

  • Barbara TranquillaAugust 28, 2015 - 10:37 am

Hi Becca, Your card is as lovely as ever and seemingly looks simple until you count the layers with mats and factor in that silk bow with hand made flowers. Keep them coming and one day I’ll catch on. Days of my Instamatic are over and unfortunately all pictures are on the computer unless I get school pictures from the grand kids and they immediately go into frames usually replacing the previous year’s photos. We have lost something without the anticipation.

Teasing us with your new dies–no pictures of them, digital or otherwise, and no available date for purchase. Can’t wait. Anticipation returns. BarbaraReplyCancel

I am getting better about printing my pictures out after storing soooooo many for sooooo long. Lol. It is so much easier to show a printed picture in a nice book rather than searching for minutes trying to find it on my phone. (I really am not good at setting up folders. Have managed a few by accident & then struggle with the next one.) I have a little picture printer that does a great job for me. :)

Sweet card! I have said for a couple of years now that I would at least scan all my boxes of photos so my four girls can have them. Well, you know how intentions go. In the days of “film” photography, you had to be somewhat discreet about the shots you took. Not so these days…I have over 1000 on just one of my digital camera disks. Definitely NOT going to print them all out! Thanks for your beautiful blog, Becca.ReplyCancel

  • Marcie SmithAugust 28, 2015 - 11:27 am

Your card is beautiful. I love old family photos they are my favorites. The ones I treasure the most are the ones that have a story behind them. My favorite is an old photo of my Grandmother sitting on a suitcase in front of her home in Italy, waiting to be picked up for a what she thought was a grand adventure with her cousin to America for a few weeks. As it turns out, my Grandfather had come over from Italy a few years earlier to work and raise enough money to buy land and begin a life here in the US. He had arranged for my Grandmother and her cousin to come for a vacation and if he liked her and they hit it off, he would ask her to stay. But if they did not hit it off, she would just return as originally planned. Well obviously it all worked out, because here I am. It is my favorite picture just because I know the story behind it.

  • VeldaAugust 28, 2015 - 11:37 am

Lovely card. Congratulations to your daughter, waiting is so hard ESP when it comes to a job. Your question about something special about photos we can hold touches me. After my Mom died I found a packet of photos like you used to pickup when you had film developed (our children barely know what that means). I had looked at the photos several times and read the penciled notes on the back of each. Suddenly one day I realized something special about that. I had not known who took the pictures. But I realized the only one not in the photos was my Grandmotber. My Mom was there, Grandpa, and his brother and family. The beautiful writing in the back said “taken with my new camera” and were taken around 1915/16. I suddenly realized the photographer had to have been my Grandmother! So, even though she died when I was only two, I know where I got my love of photography.ReplyCancel

What a beautiful card!! I love photographs, not a big digital fan as I tend to not get them printed out. Used to be could go to Walmart and for a relatively reasonable cost print out all my pictures. Then I can just sit and look through them, recalling the memory. Now I have thousands of photos on my computer, not as much fun for me having to boot up computer and go through.ReplyCancel

  • Joyce BAugust 28, 2015 - 11:44 am

Hi Becca. I am glad your daughter got a job. I know the job market is soo competitive these days.
As for photos, I upload mine to my Walgreens. They print them up and I just pick them up when they are ready. They will also mail them to me if I want. Personally, I want a hard copy of everything. I do not trust computers to not loose my information. I put my photos in albums in the order that they were taken. I also write on the back, who, when and any info that I think my be wanted in the future. I have many photos that my parents took way back when, and do not have a clue who these people are or when they were taken, etc. Love your cards always.ReplyCancel

  • SuzzieQAugust 28, 2015 - 11:44 am

So happy for your daughter and you. Sometimes things just go so right. Makes one wonder what was done to deserve the “gift”. Today’s card is a stunner. Love the combination of teal, brown/beige, off white and accented with rose/cerise. Your handmade roses are lovely. Yes, I feel there is something special about old photographs. I especially like the sepia tone ones from my family. I like to look the person/s in the photo in the eyes and see if I can “feel” their soul as I wonder what their life was like back then. I will often go through stacks of “lost” photos in antique stores and wonder who they are. I always check to see if there is a name on them. If they have a name and the photographer’s name with location, I will purchase the photo and try to locate a family member by researching census records and phone book listings. I have been successful numberous times in the past. Always the receiver is delighted to be reunited with their family. I have not printed my pictures in some time since using my phone. I really like using my camera and printing them. I need to be more disciplined and print them out and write names and dates and location on them. Wishing all a great weekend!ReplyCancel

This is a really beautiful card Becca. Some pictures are printed and framed but mostly, they remain on the computer. We have an Apple TV and when it’s in rest mode, all our pictures come up randomly in a collage fashion, so we do see them often. I make ‘birthday books’ for special ‘big’ birthdays and use old photographs from when the person was a baby, through toddler, teenager and through their life up to present day. This is a good way to preserve old photographs but I photocopy them in order to leave the origin tact.

Another beauty, Becca. So glad that you are having a good week.

I am a scrapbooker too. Sadly, the majority of my photos these days remain in digital form. I think because we take so many these days. I think it is a double edged sword. Because we can take many photos without cost we tend to take many. We do seem to place less value on them because they are abundant. Old photos, because there are few, are treasured. I do go through and print the ones that I want to scrap and preserve. I hope that they, too, will be treasured.

Do you have a list of “go to” dies that you use frequently? Have an awesome weekend!ReplyCancel

There is something special about older photos. Ones from when my Mother was a child. We only have that one. No pictures of her as a teenager. They were too poor.
She was born in the 20’s and there weren’t many pictures of her until the late 50’s and those were few and far between.

Sadly, we don’t print any pictures anymore. We’ve never been one to hang them on the walls. We do love to look at pictures though.ReplyCancel

gorgeous card as always. thanks for sharing with us. congrats to your daughter.

I love old pics especially if there is a story to go with them. as for my own, I like the digital. I like that you can see them right away and know if you need to take another because your head has been cut off. I have many albums from when I was in my 20’s and if digital hadn’t come along they would have to have their own special house. I don’t have many pics from when I was younger so I made sure I took plenty of the family as I grew up. I still like pics to this day. I just love to store them so easily. every now and then I think of what will happen to media when the next and the next and the next thing comes along. hopefully it will be able to be archived.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card and I love the rose buds! I keep more photos on the computer these days but before I was in to computers I took a lot of pictures, had them printed and stored them. I have a big album but that was done years ago when I had more time to devote to it. I date each event on a file card with each set of photos so I can always go back later and know when and where or who. I find it’s too easy to forget if it isn’t written down.ReplyCancel

Very pretty card, Becca. I have ordered some of your dies and am looking forward to using them. Sadly, I do not print my photos out. I am soon going to take some old photographs to my uncle for him to look at. I am sure that they will bring up lots of conversation and memories!ReplyCancel

Becca, Having just recently found your blog, I am in awe of your designs. Todays card is just 1 example of the many I have admired. I cherish old photos now more than ever. Our parents and most aunts and uncles have passed away, their group pictures bring back very fond memories. I enjoy the convenience of digital storage, but some photos beg to be printed. Thank youfor all your inspiration. KathsReplyCancel

After losing some precious photos of my mom when a hard drive crashed, I’m very diligent about making backups! But I’m afraid I’m not YET that good at printing them out. I want to make albums to store these memories, but time is always an issue at the moment. If the Lord spares me, I know that when this season of raising children & homeschooling is over, I will have more time to actually print them out and store them in the pretty way I so long to: homemade scrapbook albums. I have made a start though – made one album. Just need to get the photos in there now :)ReplyCancel

Wonderful news about your daughter! So pleased for you both.
Such a pretty card today :o) Someone is going to be very thrilled to own it!
I love anything old and try to imagine the lives of the people depicted in photos, previous occupants of old houses, former congregations in Churches etc. Family history fascinates me and I just love the old family Bible and scrapbook with the names and contributions of people from a century ago. I wonder if our children will share that same fascination!
I’m not very good at remembering to take photographs, but when I do, I sometimes print them, though there are more saved than I print.
    Hugs

    Oh, goody, it’s Friday!
Your card is refreshing to my eyes on this hot summer day. So lovely.

When I came to the realization that pictures would sit in boxes waiting to be framed or put in a scrapbook, I started storing them. When I was little, my grandma had a big basket of photos on her living room table. It was so much fun to sit on the couch with my sisters look at them, some of them were of us as babies. I just got a warm, delightful feeling just thinking about that! My grandma and my parents are gone now – and those photos are all the more precious.

    Love and blessings,

Hi Becca, a beautiful card as always. I just love the way you make the dies sing!
As to your question today, I do a little of both. Most of my photos are stored on my computer, but those that I treasure are printed and framed. I have two small grandbabies now and they tend to be the focal point. I have my favorites made into my iPhone case. That means that there are at least two cases made each year….they grow so fast :)
Congrats to your daughter. I’m sure she has a weight off her shoulders, as do you! I’m off to track down your new dies :))

I love photos, I love touching them, I love the nostalgia you get when you remember the time and the place. Sadly I have started taking piccies with my phone, I send them to my email and keep them in a file, but it is never the same as actually holding a photo !!

After years of storing photos in shoe boxes, I finally determinedly sorted and actually put them into albums that were piled up high waiting to be filled. I promised myself to never repeat that again especially with age creeping up and memories fading. Today I immediately file all photos and print out the ones that I want to display or showoff. It’s so easy to put off doing this simple chore but I find that by forcing myself to complete it I can actually relax, feel good about keeping with this resolve and enjoy the photos digitally or in hand.ReplyCancel

I am in awe of this beautiful card, Becca! It’s absolutely stunning and would be a card anyone would be blessed to receive. Thank you for being so generous.
In 1972, i learned the importance of keeping pictires safe. My daughter was just 15 months old when we lost everything we owned in a major flood. My extended family did what they could to replace ny daughter’s baby pictures but i was always careful to keep extra copies of our photos stored elsewhere. Today, our pictures are primarily stored on discs. I keep them labeled and in binders where I can access them. In an emergency, i can grab the binders and go. I scrapbook so I tend to print or have printed the pictures I want to scrapbook. I don’t scrapbook chronological so I pick pictures that inspire me or tell a story to print. I have also scanned into my computer many old family pictures and transfered them to discs so there are backups for these precious pictures. This was a great question and made me rethink how I’m protecting our puctures. I need to make copies of the discs and store off site so they are doubly protected.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
Congratulations to your daughter on her new job & congratulations on your new dies, I can”t wait to see them!
A few years back my son had a school project about his family tree. We asked all family members if they had any old photos we could copy. We were lucky enough to go back as far as almost all my children’s great great grandparents. Unfortunately we are missing one set, so I always wonder what they looked like & who they were. Although the ones we did get were amazing & showed a lot of family heritage. A photo puts a face to those stories your parents & grandparents used to tell you about their childhood.
I am a lover of scrapbooking & try to print out most my photos! I scrapbook the special ones & put the rest in albums. I hope that one day people can go back & see my family’s stories.
    Have a lovely weekend! xReplyCancel

I’m afraid I am one of those people who keeps the photos. And I have very few. My apartment was broken into and vandalized several years before the computer age. Most of my photos and other important documents were torn up and soaked by various jars of liquid that were smashed on the floor (most notably a table full of mason jars of pickles and food I had just canned). I saved enough to make 3 small photo albums, one for each of my daughters, that showed them from birth to teens with whatever I had salvaged. I have a few photos of my grandparents and aunts and uncles that will be my next project. In each case, by the time I could face working with the pictures I had, I was able to color copy them. Once I have given all that I have of these copies (in albums) to my daughters, it will be up to them to do whatever they would like with them. They keep photos via their computers. Whenever I want to do a layout page of one of my grandkids to frame or create a piece of altered art with, I can access it on my computer. My poor husband was given the job of going through the photos his parents had collected over the years (6 packing boxes like the ones you purchase at Staples) when they passed away. The idea was that he should bundle them as he thought interesting to his 3 siblings. A horrendous task that he never could face doing. After about 6 years, we moved to a smaller house and had no room for these boxes. So he shipped 2 cartons to each sibling after a quick glance through for things he might want. So much easier to view and choose what to keep these days!ReplyCancel

Lovely card today. Love the use of the different dies. I print the pictures off my phone and place them in an inexpensive photo album. Only until I get the time to “scrapbook” them—don’t know when that will be, LOL. My doing this, my grandson can look at his pictures without using my phone, and we can discuss all the fun we had. I have purchased different albums for vacations, Steam Engine Shows, Holidays, play time, etc. He picks out the one he wants and we “read” the pictures. He’s only 3, but this is a happy time for us.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card as usual. Love the flowers with the bow. I used those flowers just today. I’m working on a project for Halloween & sprayed the flowers black. They turned out surprisingly pretty.

I rarely take pictures with my phone but do have a digital camera. I got into the habit early on to look through them, delete the bad ones & then print out the good, saving a copy on my computer & occasionally backing them up on a exterior hard drive. I suspect I should save them to the “cloud” as if there’s a fire, saving them to a separate drive really doesn’t help, does it?

I love to look at old photos of my Mom taken during WWII. They are so cute & she looks so innocent.ReplyCancel

Dear Becc, My house is filled with pictures. I love seeing them and some are very old, like my grandmother when she was a young woman. I like to print my pictures, but usually at a photo store since they apply more ink and last longer. When family members arrive and want to see pictures I have them ready, usually in a box. My daughter has made me some small 8×8 scrapbooking books, usually Christmas ones which I cherish and the younger grandchildren love to browse through them all the time. Thank you Becca, and have a great day.ReplyCancel

Apparently, I’ve missed this week and next week’s Friday Giveaway. I cannot imagine how I let that happen but a major pain medication adjustment has left me feeling unable to think of more than one thought at a time. I guess that’s what happens when the medications are increased but I’m definitely not pleased! I hope I make sense as my wonderful hubby says I’ve made a few odd statements since the medication change. Hoping for improvement in my cognitive skills as I adjust.

This card is lovely. Everything you create is unique and heartwarming. I love digital photography because we can take so many photos without running out of film, we know whether we got a good picture and we can delete the unsalvageable pictures. I take so many more pictures than I ever did with film. I store pictures on my computer and phone but I try not to leave them there without a backup. I generally store my pictures on discs, which I keep in photo books. Since I’m still recovering from complications related to my broken bones, I’m afraid I’m behind in making that extra copy. Fortunately, my computer is backed up off site but I need to get my pictures on my phone stored in a better place. I need to do that soon but at least they are on a memory card.ReplyCancel
