Craft Tool Heroes – Segment 1

WRCTH-Title
So I’m starting a series of the tools in my stash that are heroes – in other words, in my eyes they save the day :-)  I’ve wanted to share this kind of information for a while because we all take it for granted that everyone has been around the craft block for a while and they know everything we know.  I get emails of all kinds from beginners through advanced crafters who want to talk about technique and tools.  I’m a bit of a tool junkie and I normally try several flavors of a tool before I know which one is good for me.   All that to say, for some of you this video will be old hat, for some of you it will take the mystery out of something you’ve never tried.   In my videos I’m trying to cover
everyone and ask you to forgive me if it seems like I’m talking about something that is obvious.  I’m trying to head off questions before they happen and I want to be sure to talk on the level of every crafter :-)

Here is the video:

When video taping, sometimes I can’t see what I’m doing or I’d have to put my big head in the way.  After all the prep, lining up, telling how this always works – a dud. If you enjoy outtakes and wonder if things always go my way… this is only 11 seconds and struck me as ironically funny . . . I had to share.
http://youtu.be/IJtYWCK5cm4

Lastly, many of you wanted to see exactly how I put a card together.  We’ll I filmed this one since the camera was out.  It’s sped up many times over so that the yawning doesn’t overcome you.  I’ve had many requests for this so hopefully you’ll see something in my workflow that works for you. Where I thought there might be questions, I try to volunteer the info and let you know what I’ve used.

Whoa, it’s been a video-tastic day!  I’m working on more things for my lovely readers – you!  Stay tuned!

Becca. I have one of those stamp alignment tools but always forget to use it. Thanks for reminding me how much easier it is to line things up with it. I’ll have to dig it out and use it. I enjoyed watching you make the card too.

    Becca my dear,
I have finally made to be first on your blog. I really enjoyed seeing how your perfect stamping is created. A lot of time what I do is stamp first and then use my die to cut it out. I was. Happy to see just how you do it. Every tip you give is much appreciated.

  • Sandra SmithJune 16, 2013 - 8:52 pm

I appreciate all of these videos. I have always thought I didn’t really need the stamp alignment tool but I now see how much I need one and will be buying one next time I shop. I do not know how I managed without it.

I really appreciate your video showing how you assemble your cards. I never thought of putting adhesive only in the corners until I get everything lined up. I have bern crafting for years and sometimes layers go on perfectly and other times I have to pull them off and hope I don’t ruin my layer. This is a simple thing but something I just never thought about doing it. This video just made crafting easier for me.

Your outake video gives a glimpse of the effort you put into your videos.

I am looking forward to learning more from you. I would love to see you make various bows using your bow maker.

    Thank you Becca!ReplyCancel

What a perfect way to end a lovely Sunday, by watching some Becca videos. Thanks for taking time to do these. I loved both of them, interesting to see how you placed your clear stamp to the side before alignment. Good idea. And I especially loved watching you assemble the card. Fascinating, and I’ll be watching each video you’re able to share with us. I don’t always have time to leave a comment, but I get an email notice when you post, so I ALWAYS check in to see what gorgeous-ness you have created that day. Hugs & hope your day was pleasant. Hi Heather B (Comment #3)

I get my Scotch 3M tape from Office Depot, but only when they have a coupon. The roll is 38 yards and is normally about $36.00. The last time I had a 30% off coupon I picked up a roll. Can also be purchased from Uline. Either way, full price is much more economical than buying one small roll at a time.

I get my pearls from Hobby Lobby in the scrapbooking department when they are 50% off and sometimes you can get them at Michaels on the bling aisle.ReplyCancel

  • Becca FeekenJune 16, 2013 - 11:01 pm

    Hi Amelia E (Comment #19)

I used the clear earring back on the sharp pin that I put in the flower. I’m always afraid that someone will poke themselves. It’s tiny and so it’s very hard to see on the video. I buy them by the pack at Michael’s in the jewelry department. One pack will last forever :-)ReplyCancel

Becca, this is exactly what I needed right now. We are awaiting June 27 when my hubby will have very serious surgery to remove a tumor deep in the roof of his mouth. I have not been able to concentrate for long since we learned of this ahead of us, and yoru videos, of tools I have but may not use as well as I could fit the bill tonight to keep my attention for a short while. Thanks so much, for the lovely stamped messages I see on your cards every time I get a notice from you. You uplift me daily.

  • Clare WJune 17, 2013 - 2:02 am

Fabulous videos – thank you sooo much. Love the piano music during the one in which you assemble a card. A stamp alignment tool looks a good idea. I have trouble constructing things straight (such as matts) and perfect so I’ll try your sticking technique as it looks fool proof to me. I always look at a finished card I make thinking ‘that’s not straight’ – or ‘its not quite central’ etc.. – I know others dont see my errors as I do but if I could only get some of these basics spot on I think it would make all the difference to the end result. Either that or I have wonky eyes! Practice makes perfect I suppose but I want it perfect every time – your tips will be very helpful I think. Thank you.ReplyCancel

  • Dottie DavisJune 17, 2013 - 5:05 am

After messing up a lot of card stock with “wishful” alignment, I, too, use an acrylic block and corner aligner. It is the only way to go to get perfect alignment instead of the crooked ones we sigh over and send anyway (because we have used nice paper). I like the video as it showed an alternative way of glueing down the card layers. I never thought of doing one end at a time. I also don’t know where to find the foam tape in bulk. The little sheets they sell with a few in a pack are expensive. Thank you so much for doing the videos for us, they were great! And the card is so beautiful to boot!ReplyCancel

Thank you, again, for sharing your wisdom. I will get out my thingamagigy and use it! Wax paper is perfect, I hated having to clean the small acrylic that comes with it. Yeah, wax paper. My eye balling is wonky 40% of the time and like Clare I send it anyway.ReplyCancel

  • Joanna MackintoshJune 17, 2013 - 6:40 am

Thanks for that wonderful video Becca, I found lots of hints and tips I can use to aid my card making.

One question though – what were the earring backs used for please?ReplyCancel

  • Joanna MackintoshJune 17, 2013 - 6:52 am

I should have read all the other comments first! I see you’ve already mentioned what you use the earring backs for ;)

I just watched your alignment video too – I use my ‘stamp positioner’ all the time and in fact just demonstrated it last month at my stamp club, I’m amazed at the people who didn’t know about it!

The wax paper idea is good but unfortunately the cost is rather prohibitive over here in the UK – you *can* buy it but it’s imported from the US and therefore becomes expensively precious. Luckily, I have a son living in Ca who brought me a couple of boxes last Christmas when he visited :)ReplyCancel

amazing Becca, ty so much for taking the time to make a video for us, I don’t own a stamp a ma jig yet, I have looked at it often and even had it in my cart a few times but then always seem to come across something I want or need more that is on sale for a fantastic price and I can’t afford both….the sale item always wins, obviously lol I have never seen it on sale and most of the time when I go to M’s it is sold out, The only craft store in my city carries it but they don’t offer coupons. Sooo I will get it one of these days…I’ve never seen one by any other company, maybe I should google that, thanks for the info.

  • Mary NiebJune 17, 2013 - 10:42 am

Thanks for the videos. I also use my stampamajig often and learned the hard way after stamping sentiments or images off kilter. After all the years I have been making cards I love how you align the different layers then flip them upside down and secure one end at a time-BRILLANT. I get my layers aligned then pick up the top layer to apply the adhesive and never get it aligned properly again. Your method will save me alot of aggravation.ReplyCancel

  • Anne(UK)June 17, 2013 - 10:42 am

What a treat you had in store for us today! Not one, but two amazing videos and a great bonus ‘out-take’! Loved them, especially the last one where we get to see you creating a masterpiece.
As I’m in the UK and couldn’t source one, I made a stamp alignment tool out of Lego and another from Duplo several years ago – necessity being the mother of invention and all that! I haven’t tried making the master image on wax paper though. Thanks for the heads up on that. I shall be butchering my rather long roll and stamping several favourite images which I’ll then organise (i.e. throw in a box!) for future use.
Looking forward to more craft heroes and heroines.

  • Pat JandacekJune 17, 2013 - 11:56 am

Thanks for your videos, Becca. I continue to use the supplied acrylic piece with my stamp-a-ma-jig ’cause I apparently have GREAT difficulty cutting anything square plus I feel more secure with an inflexible piece for placement in the corner of the jig. I do sometimes wonder if the thickness of the acrylic may decrease accuracy of placement, a deflection or shadow of sorts…? Fabulous idea of fastening your layers first with light tape in the corners. That’s an eye-opener that’s going to be put into practice immediately, it will give me an opportunity to also square a wonky cut! I don’t often comment but wouldn’t miss your fantastic work…you have a brilliant and beautiful mind and a sharing heart – all so very much appreciated.ReplyCancel

Thanks soooo very much for sharing these videos Becca. I truely enjoyed to watch them, and especially how you put the card together. I have a question for that one. You said you used the earring stoppers for your pins, which I´ve also thought of, but I´ve never been able to find them anywhere here, except from at the juweler, and there they´re soo expensive, that it´s completely out of the question, but I could see in the video, that you had a whole box of them, where have you found them?? I would really apreciate to know, where you get these from, as I have been looking everywhere here, with no luck, and I would really love to be able to use pins a lot more, but you´re always a bit afraid, that people will prick themself on the needle if you don´t cover the tip somehow, so please????
Have a wonderful day and thanks sooo much for sharing all your great tips here with us and your stunning work always.ReplyCancel

Love the videos, dear girl!! I’ll have to check at my Michael’s for the earring backs again. Every store seems to be a little different… I should know; I stop at every one I see as I’m driving along. Does he word “obsessed” ring a bell? Anyway, I also do miniatures (doll houses, room boxes, etc. in 1″ scale) and there are many pricey tools for squaring things up. I saw a YouTube where the lady used legos and I happened to have a few left from the grandkids visits. So that is what I use for my minis. I am going to try them out on my cards and see if they do the trick. Again, thanks for the videos, I need all the help I can get!! And your card is delightful and fresh!ReplyCancel

I am always amazed at your talent! I have followed you for a long time even though I don’t leave comments. I think, how does she have time to read them all! To me it is a “high” moment when I see the “Feedblitz” in my email and am always anxious to see what you are up to. I LOVE tutorials! I have a stamp a ma jig and have never used it! Now I can’t wait for the oppertunity! I also loved seeing you put a card together. Wish we could really work that fast and had someone else to do all the cutting out!
Anyway, I recognized all of the things you used for the card except for the extra piece you added at the top of the oval and the feathery piece you put on both sides of the roses. I looked at the bottom of the tutorial to see if you listed as you ususally do the things you used but didn’t see any of that information. Please keep up the out of this world creativity coming you inspire us all! SueReplyCancel

Thanks for the videos. I think I have 2 stamp positioners but have not used them because I forget how to use them! I was wondering what paper you used in the second example. It has a beautiful floral oval that you stamped the sentiment in a brown ink.
Loved the perfect border idea, I am going to try that one today. Thanks again for sharing your gifts.ReplyCancel

Great videos! I really appreciated being shown how to use the stamp positioner. I loved how you let us see in Video 2 that like the rest of us, you too can have problems with placing ribbon on a card the first time. Not every thing goes perfect the first time around! Thank You.ReplyCancel
