Becca Bit: Piecing Card Bases

Hi there friends!!  Oh my goodness it is glorious outside today!!  I had some errands to run before I made myself sit down and finish up, but I do have a card to share today.  I’m sure by now that you have no doubt which is my favorite of the new releases from Our Daily Bread Designs.  Bingo, the background stamp called He Shall Be Called is magnificent.  I only hope I haven’t worn it out, lol!  Overstamping with text is so big right now and this it is the perfect stamp to add a little bit of character without being too distracting.

This is much easier than it looks.  My recommendation is to use an image on the back that has no orientation, like a random pattern.  When you try this with words,  there is a certain way you need to stamp if you want the words to flip up in a readable orientation.

I cut a slit in my design paper and stamped the text on the backside of my paper and then smudged it with distress ink.  See my diagram for text orientation — the arrows point to where the top of the text of the stamp should be.  I used a stampamajig for alignment and stamped the text four times. Then when I curled each edge up, I had a finished look.  To hide the edges of the cut I made, I centered it all within the circle of Spellbinders Heart Circles hollowed out using Spellbinders Standard Circles LG.  I ran a border across bottom of the card and tied a Peg Bow.  It’s made just the same as the double bow I did with my Peg Bow Maker  however I wrapped one additional time.  Since there were so many layers to work with, I adjusted each loop while the bow was still on the pegs.

SUPPLIES I USED
Stamps: Our Daily Bread Designs – Anchor, He Shall Be Called
Paper: Bazzill, K & Company – Julianne, 140lb Strathmore Watercolor Paper (tablet from Michaels or HL)
Ink: Antique Linen Distress Ink, Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink, Vintage Photo Distress Ink
Accessories: Spellbinders Heart Circles, Spellbinders Standard Circles LG, Ribbon (Michaels), pearls, 3L Tape (HL)

My card size is 5½” x 7½”.  That’s one of my favorite sizes because it gives me room to work and I have envelopes that fit that size.  Many people ask how I get a card base that is 15″.  Well, that leads me into today’s Becca Bit.    This technique will work with any card size especially when you want to economize on  paper.  So have a look and see if this will work for you and your favorite card size!

By the way, we have all our winners for the Blogaversary!!  Thanks so much for participating!!  You, the readers, make Amazing Paper Grace everything it is and hopefully a fun place to be!!  Thank you again!!

Great tip! It looks like your card base was white and you added the colored cardstock layer on the front. Am I seeing that right in your photo? You mentioned water color paper or tag board. Will just regular white cardstock work for this? It would be less expensive than watercolor paper, but would it be sturdy enough? Some of the white cardstocks are flimsy.ReplyCancel

As always, such beauty. This card is absolutely lovely! In the tutorial for piecing the card base you mentioned water color paper or tag board. What brand and where do you normally buy them? Also, I wondered about the tape. It seemed like a large roll. Is it less expensive than sookwang or the sticky red tape and where can you purchase the Crafty Power Tape?
You lift me up each day. I have a health issue which causes me to be in pain constantly and your beautiful artwork always makes my heart smile. Thank You for sharing.ReplyCancel

    Great card Becca.

Thanks for the tutorial on how you make your cards. By and large – in the UK, most cards start off from a piece of A4 card (similar size to the US letter size), using a medium to heavy weight card stock. From that one piece of paper, we can get most of the various card base sizes – the most common sizes used are the A4 folded into what we call the A5 size card. If we cut the A4 in half we have 2 x A5 pieces of card – one of those folded in half is known as A6 card base. We also make most of our square cards from the A4 piece of card too.

I find it very interesting that you paper piece your cards – i would never have guessed that you did that – so that means you do a fab job to hide it. Well done and thanks for the information as usual.

Becca, I love your awesome card. From the minute I saw it, I was saying to myself “how on earth did she get those words to all be right side up after flipping up those corners”, so I’m very glad you showed us. That is so
creative. I’ve got to find some stamp I can try it with. And, I love that frame around it. Even the border tops it off just right. I would love to spend a day stamping with you and just try to see if I could detect how your brain works, haha!ReplyCancel

  • JaneyFebruary 19, 2011 - 9:55 pm

The card is beautiful. I sometimes can’t understand the ‘how to’ statements and so with this one, I will have to stamp the words on the inside myself just to understand how you really did it. Thanks for sharing this card, Becca.

And Thanks for the Becca’s Bits, too – really cool how you do this.

I also enjoy your Amazing Quotes each day – meaningful to me.

    Hey Becca,
This card is sooooooo beautiful! I absolutely love the way the lettering comes peeking out from the other side. It’s just mind-boggling how you figure out how to fold, cut, layer, stamp, and piece objects together! I am trying to figure out which border punch you used to trim the paper strip behind the ribbon. Thank you so much for another gorgeous card.ReplyCancel

Thank you for sharing this beautiful card. There is a lot to learn here, and I appreciate your willingness to let us all know how you achieve these wonderful results. I would have struggled for ages trying to figure out how to stamp those words correctly (and wasted a lot of paper!)
And I am one of the people who wondered how you did the 15 inch paper for your card base. Brilliant!! Thank you so much for answering my question!ReplyCancel

This is such a rich and elegant card. Paper is just gorgeous. I like how you have taken beautiful single sided paper and created what looks like double sided paper by using a background stamp and distressed it. Thank you for your tip on creating large cards. I prefer them also so all the layering and details aren’t scruched together. Makes for a more professional look. What beautiful ribbon – love the different texture on each side.
I just wanted to share with you that you no longer have to hear me moan and groan about not being able to play with all the fabulous winter release dies. I just got my shipped message that they are in route and that I will get them sometime this week. I am so excited!!!! Sorry if I drove you nuts complaining. Three months just seemed like such a long time when you prepaid for something. But now that they are on their way earlier then expected, I am a happy camper again.
